OBJECTIVE: To assess the results of a new cardioversion service that used intravenous midazolam sedation with cardioversion performed with a biphasic defibrillator by an experienced doctor with a prior review of patients in a pre-cardioversion clinic.
METHODS: 368 consecutive patients who were treated under the new service over its first 12 months (group 1) were compared with 210 consecutive patients who attended under the old system during the preceding 12 months (group 2). Patients of group 2 had cardioversion under general anaesthesia by junior doctors with a monophasic defibrillator.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the nature of hyperthermia-induced pathophysiological changes in an animal model including effects on lung compliance.
METHODOLOGY: Piglets were randomly assigned to heated or non-heated groups. Heated animals were warmed to 4 degrees C above normal body temperature while sedated and breathing spontaneously. Cardiorespiratory variables were recorded serially and haematological assessments and blood cultures taken at 0 and 6 h. After 6 h the animals were killed and a limited postmortem was performed. Control animals had all procedures without heating.

Midazolam is a more recent benzodiazepine used for sedation during endoscopic procedures, including sphincter of Oddi (SO) manometry. However, the effect of this drug on the human SO has so far not been studied. In this paper we explored the effect of midazolam on human SO motility by means of endoscopic manometry. BACKGROUND: Pain management approaches during uterine aspiration vary, which include local anesthetic, oral analgesics, moderate sedation, deep sedation, or a combination of approaches.
