Dysphonia secondary to traumatic avulsion of the vocal fold in infants.

OBJECTIVE: Airway compromise due to paediatric intubation injuries is well documented; however, intubation injuries may also cause severe voice disorders. We report our experience and review the world literature on the voice effects of traumatic paediatric intubation. CASE SERIES: We report five cases of children referred to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children who suffered traumatic avulsion of the vocal fold at the time of, or secondary to, endotracheal intubation. All children had significant dysphonia and underwent specialist voice therapy. CONCLUSIONS: The mechanisms of injury, ris

Respiratory and skin effects of exposure to wood dust from the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis.

OBJECTIVES: Potential health effects related to wood dust from the rubber tree, which produces natural rubber latex, have not been previously investigated. The main aim of this study was to investigate the relations of rubber tree dust exposure to respiratory and skin symptoms, asthma and lung function. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 103 workers (response rate 89%) in a rubber tree furniture factory and 76 office workers (73%) in four factories in Thailand. All participants answered a questionnaire and performed spirometry. Inhalable dust levels were measured in differen

The respiratory health of swimmers.

Regular physical activity is recognized as an effective health promotion measure. Among various activities, swimming is preferred by a large portion of the population. Although swimming is generally beneficial to a person's overall health, recent data suggest that it may also sometimes have detrimental effects on the respiratory system. Chemicals resulting from the interaction between chlorine and organic matter may be irritating to the respiratory tract and induce upper and lower respiratory symptoms, particularly in children, lifeguards and high-level swimmers. The prevalence of atopy, rhini

Respiratory symptoms and 30 year mortality from obstructive lung disease and pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: As little is known about the long term relationship between respiratory symptoms and mortality from non-malignant respiratory diseases, a study was undertaken to investigate the predictive value of respiratory symptoms and symptom load for mortality from obstructive lung disease (OLD) and pneumonia in the long term in a Norwegian population. METHODS: In 1972, 19 998 persons aged 15-70 years living in Oslo were randomly selected for a respiratory survey. The response rate was 89%. All were followed for 30 years. The association between cough, asthma-like symptoms, two levels of dys

Characterization of a 7% carbon dioxide (CO2) inhalation paradigm to evoke anxiety symptoms in healthy subjects.

The present study is aimed at characterizing the carbon dioxide (CO2) procedure in healthy subjects to achieve reliable provocation of anxiety symptoms. Thirty healthy subjects inhaled in single-blind both compressed air and 7% CO2 mixture. Panic Symptom List (PSLIII-R), Visual Analogue Scale-Anxiety (VAS-A), State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Y/1), respiratory parameters and skin conductance were measured. 'Responders' were classified depending on PSLIII-R scores after CO2. Twelve out of the 21 'responders' performed a second test to assess test-retest repeatability. In 21 subjects Delta%VAS-A (45

Incidence and prognostic value of respiratory events in acute leukemia.

Acute respiratory failure and infectious pneumonia are the major causes of death during induction chemotherapy of acute leukemia. However, the causes, incidence and prognostic value of all respiratory events (REs) occurring in this context have never been assessed prospectively. We recruited 65 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed acute leukemia into a 1-year prospective study (December 2000-November 2001) to evaluate the incidence and prognostic value of these events. REs were frequent: 38 were recorded in 30 patients. There was a significant relationship between REs and pre-existing res

Effect of heat stress on milk production, rectal temperature, respiratory rate and blood chemistry in Holstein, Jersey and Australian Milking Zebu cows.

The effect of heat stress on changes in milk production, rectal temperature, respiratory rate and blood chemistry was evaluated in three groups of six mature Holstein, Jersey and Australian Milking Zebu (AMZ) dairy cows. These animals were subjected to a cool environment when the mean temperature-humidity index (THI) was 72+/-1.4 (dry bulb temperature of 22.2-24.4 degrees C and relative humidity of 100-60%) during the month of December. This experiment was repeated during the hotter month of July of the following year, when the mean THI was 93+/-3.1 (dry bulb temperature of 35.6-43.9 degrees C

Disorders of the respiratory muscles.

The act of breathing depends on coordinated activity of the respiratory muscles to generate subatmospheric pressure. This action is compromised by disease states affecting anatomical sites ranging from the cerebral cortex to the alveolar sac. Weakness of the respiratory muscles can dominate the clinical manifestations in the later stages of several primary neurologic and neuromuscular disorders in a manner unique to each disease state. Structural abnormalities of the thoracic cage, such as scoliosis or flail chest, interfere with the action of the respiratory muscles-again in a manner unique t

Reduced expression of neuropeptides can be related to respiratory disturbances in Rett syndrome.

We immunohistochemically examined neurotransmitter systems, which function in the brainstem and are involved in neuronal organization of respiration, in an autopsy brain from a patient with Rett syndrome (RS). Immunoreactivity (IR) for tyrosine hydroxylase, a functional marker for catecholaminergic neurons, was severely reduced in the locus ceruleus, while that for tryptophan hydroxylase involved in serotonin synthesis was spared in the raphe nuclei. In the brainstem, IR for substance P (SP) was reduced in the parabrachial complex and that for methionine-enkephalin (met-enk) was affected in th

Spirometric changes after open mitral surgery.

New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional classification of cardiac patients is assessed by subjective impairment of respiratory reserve. We objectively studied pulmonary function by spirometry in 31 random patients (average age 27.2 years) with rheumatic mitral valve (MV) disease undergoing open surgery (7 reconstruction, 24 replacement) preoperatively, predischarge and at 3 month follow-up. Better preoperative spirometric parameters were observed in class II nonsmoker patients with smaller cardiothoracic ratio (CTR) and normal pulmonary artery pressure (PAP). After surgery mean PAP decrea

[The initial experience of using isolated ultrafiltration of the blood for the correction of severe respiratory failure in hemoblastosis patients].

To correct acute respiratory failure in patients with hemoblastoses and taking into consideration the low efficacy of standard techniques, 8 operations of isolated ultrafiltration combined with low-flow extracorporeal oxygenation in 6 patients were performed. The first results have been analyzed. To attain the maximum positive result, it is recommended that the method may be included earlier in a complex of intensive therapy measures.

Mortality and concurrent use of opioids and hypnotics in older patients: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepine hypnotics and the related nonbenzodiazepine hypnotics (z-drugs) are among the most frequently prescribed medications for older adults. Both can depress respiration, which could have fatal cardiorespiratory effects, particularly among patients with concurrent opioid use. Trazodone, frequently prescribed in low doses for insomnia, has minimal respiratory effects, and, consequently, may be a safer hypnotic for older patients. Thus, for patients beginning treatment with benzodiazepine hypnotics or z-drugs, we compared deaths during periods of current hypnotic use, withou

Primary ciliary dyskinesia in pediatric persons: A microscopic movement malady.

The respiratory tract (i.e., airways and alveoli) is in close contact with the milieu that is outside the human body and thus, in addition to its role in exchange of gases, it is needed to protect the human being from outside threats such as microbes and pollution. Respiratory tract diseases can have major detrimental effects on human health with increased risks for morbidity and mortality. An example of this dilemma is the orphan disease, primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a complex genetic disorder linked with myriad genetic mutations involving over 50 genes and over 2000 pathogenic variants
