Characterization of dimethacrylate polymeric networks: a study of the crosslinked structure formed by monomers used in dental composites.

The resin phase of dental composites is mainly composed of combinations of dimethacrylate comonomers, with final polymeric network structure defined by monomer type/reactivity and degree of conversion. This fundamental study evaluates how increasing concentrations of the flexible triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) influences void formation in bisphenol A diglycidyl dimethacrylate (BisGMA) co-polymerizations and correlates this aspect of network structure with reaction kinetic parameters and macroscopic volumetric shrinkage. Photopolymerization kinetics was followed in real-time by a ne

Effect of antihypotensive treatment on cerebral oxygenation of preterm infants without PDA.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants with hypotension (mean arterial blood pressure [MABP] < gestational age [GA]) are treated with volume expansion and/or dopamine to ensure adequate cerebral perfusion/oxygenation. We used near-infrared spectroscopy to analyze the effects of volume expansion and dopamine on cerebral oxygenation in hypotensive preterm infants without patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Among 390 infants, 71 (GA < 32 weeks) were hypotensive and eligible for inclusion. Thirty-three infants received volume expansion only (NaCl 0.9%; 20 mL/kg), and 38 received additional

Limiting circulatory arrest using regional low flow perfusion.

Deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) is commonly used for neonatal cardiac surgery. However, prolonged exposure to DHCA is associated with neurologic morbidity. The Norwood operation and aortic arch advancement are procedures that typically require DHCA during surgical correction. Regional low flow perfusion (RLFP) can be used to limit or exclude the use of circulatory arrest. This technique involves cannulation of the innominate or subclavian artery using a Gore-Tex graft, allowing isolated cerebral perfusion. Data was collected in 34 patients undergoing either neonatal aortic arch reco

Orthostatic tolerance, cerebral oxygenation, and blood velocity in humans with sympathetic failure.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with orthostatic hypotension due to sympathetic failure become symptomatic when standing, although their capability to maintain cerebral blood flow is reported to be preserved. We tested the hypothesis that in patients with sympathetic failure, orthostatic symptoms reflect reduced cerebral perfusion with insufficient oxygen supply. METHODS: This study addressed the relationship between orthostatic tolerance, mean cerebral artery blood velocity (V(mean), determined by transcranial Doppler ultrasonography), oxygenation (oxyhemoglobin [O(2)Hb], determined by near

Effect of alirocumab on coronary plaque stratified by atherothrombotic risk.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous clinical studies have demonstrated the enhanced cardiovascular benefit of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibition in high-risk patient subsets; however, the mechanisms underlying the greater benefit among patients at high atherothrombotic risk remain largely unknown. We aimed to investigate the effect of alirocumab on coronary plaque regression stratified according to AHA/ACC guideline-defined risk categories among patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS: This was a substudy of the PACMAN-AMI trial, a randomized, double-blind tri

The Impact of Distance and Altitude on Railway Environmental Noise Based on Cerebral Oxygenated Hemoglobin Saturation.

Railways are considered an environmentally sustainable mode of transportation but can pose significant environmental challenges due to their operation and associated activities. Among these, noise generation is a persistent source of public complaints. In Korea, a maximum distance of 100 m from buildings has been proposed for new railway developments in residential areas, although this guideline lacks a solid foundation based on experimental evidence. Noise barriers are often installed as a mitigation measure; however, there is no standardized guideline for their height in relation to their ef

Effects of central-peripheral FMS on urinary retention after spinal cord injury: a pilot randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Urinary retention is a common complication of spinal cord injury (SCI), which can seriously affect the quality of life of patients. Function magnetic stimulation (FMS) has been widely used in the recovery of neurological function in various diseases, but its application in urinary retention after SCI remains unclear. Therefore, we would like to conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) to observe the feasible effect of FMS on urinary retention after SCI, to explore its mechanism of action. METHOD/DESIGN: This is a single-center pilot RCT, which 60 patients with urinary ret

Air Pollution Measurement and Dispersion Simulation Using Remote and In Situ Monitoring Technologies in an Industrial Complex in Busan, South Korea.

Rapid industrialization and the influx of human resources have led to the establishment of industrial complexes near urban areas, exposing residents to various air pollutants. This has led to a decline in air quality, impacting neighboring residential areas adversely, which highlights the urgent need to monitor air pollution in these areas. Recent advancements in technology, such as Solar Occultation Flux (SOF) and Sky Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (SkyDOAS) used as remote sensing techniques and mobile extraction Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (MeFTIR) used as an in sit

Phospholipid membrane interfaces and metal cations, Ca2+ and Cu2+, modulate insulin amyloid fibrillation.

Metal ions are widely implicated in amyloid fibril (AF) formation, yet their effects have largely been characterized in solution, while the influence of lipid membrane interfaces has received less attention. To address this gap, we herein addressed the question of whether the effects of two divalent cations with contrasting physicochemical properties (Cu2+ and Ca2+) on AF formation in a model amyloidogenic protein (recombinant human insulin, INS) are the intrinsic properties of these ions in solution or depend on the presence of a lipid membrane interface. AF formation kinetics were monitored

Effect of 12-week head-down strong abdominal breathing on cognitive function in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a single-centre randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often suffer from a combination of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and a significant reduction in their quality of life. In the exercise programme of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR), pulmonary rehabilitation intervention is often carried out by enhancing respiratory function. Strong abdominal breathing is a kind of breathing method, through which the diaphragm can be exercised, thereby enhancing the deflection distance of the diaphragm during breathing and improving respiratory function. The inversion trainer can meet the dif

Altered activation patterns of the sensory-motor cortex in patients with knee osteoarthritis during knee isokinetic movement at different speeds.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal brain activation patterns in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) at rest have been revealed, but it is unclear how brain activation patterns change during movement. This study aimed to investigate the alterations in brain activation patterns in KOA patients during knee isokinetic movement, and the correlation between cortical activity changes and pain severity and dysfunction. METHODS: Eighteen patients with KOA and 18 healthy controls (HC) were recruited, and to performed the knee isokinetic test with three speeds. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was us

Diagnosis of Delayed Cerebral Ischemia in Patients with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage and Triggers for Intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) is a major determinant for poor neurological outcome after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Detection and treatment of DCI is a key component in the neurocritical care of patients with aSAH after initial aneurysm repair. METHODS: Narrative review of the literature. RESULTS: Over the past 2 decades, there has been a paradigm shift away from macrovascular (angiographic) vasospasm as a main diagnostic and therapeutic target. Instead, the pathophysiology of DCI is hypothesized to derive from several proischemic pathomechanisms. Clinical exa

Acceleration-induced near-loss of consciousness: the "A-LOC" syndrome.

BACKGROUND: There is an insidious phenomenon that can occur when aircrew are exposed to +Gz stress even at levels that are insufficient to cause +Gz-induced loss of consciousness (G-LOC). Under these circumstances aircrew exhibit an altered state of awareness that was termed Almost Loss of Consciousness (A-LOC) by the U.S. Navy in the late 1980's. A-LOC is a syndrome that includes a wide variety of cognitive, physical, emotional, and physiological symptoms. While A-LOC has been observed in centrifuge studies and reported in flight for over 15 yr, a definitive description of the syndrome does n

Maximal Systolic Acceleration and Near-Infrared Fluorescence Imaging With Indocyanine Green as Predictors for Successful Lower Extremity Revascularization.

BACKGROUND: Patients with lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) frequently require revascularization procedures. Currently used diagnostic methods are insufficient in predicting successful outcomes and focus on macrovascular rather than microvascular state. Several promising modalities to increase diagnostic accuracy are emerging, including maximal systolic acceleration (ACCmax), measured by duplex ultrasound (DUS). For the assessment of tissue perfusion, near-infrared fluorescence (NIR) imaging using indocyanine green (ICG) demonstrates promising results. This study aims to identify the use

Near-Infrared Fluorescence Imaging With Indocyanine Green to Predict Clinical Outcome After Revascularization in Lower Extremity Arterial Disease.

Contemporary quality control methods are often insufficient in predicting clinical outcomes after revascularization in lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) patients. This study evaluates the potential of near-infrared fluorescence imaging with indocyanine green to predict the clinical outcome following revascularization. Near-infrared fluorescence imaging was performed before and within 5 days following the revascularization procedure. Clinical improvement was defined as substantial improvement of pain free walking distance, reduction of rest- and/or nocturnal pain, or tendency toward wound

uPAR-targeted optical near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging and PET for image-guided surgery in head and neck cancer: proof-of-concept in orthotopic xenograft model.

PURPOSE: Urokinase-like Plasminogen Activator Receptor (uPAR) is overexpressed in a variety of carcinoma types, and therefore represents an attractive imaging target. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of two uPAR-targeted probes for PET and fluorescence tumor imaging in a human xenograft tongue cancer model. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN AND RESULTS: Tumor growth of tongue cancer was monitored by bioluminescence imaging (BLI) and MRI. Either ICG-Glu-Glu-AE105 (fluorescent agent) or 64Cu-DOTA-AE105 (PET agent) was injected systemically, and fluorescence imaging or PET/CT imaging was pe

Indocyanine green fluorescence imaging of lymph nodes during robotic-assisted laparoscopic operation for endometrial cancer. A prospective validation study using a sentinel lymph node surgical algorithm.

OBJECTIVE: A sentinel lymph node (SLN) strategy may have particular value in endometrial cancer (EC) because a therapeutic effect of lymphadenectomy per se is unproven. The aim was to evaluate indocyanine green (ICG) and near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence mapping using a surgical algorithm. METHODS: From November 2012 through December 2015, women with apparently early stage EC underwent robot-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy including ICG fluorescence SLN mapping following the Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) surgical algorithm. RESULTS: Among 108 patients included, ≥1 SLNs wa

Improved technique for evaluating oral free flaps by pinprick testing assisted by indocyanine green near-infrared fluorescence angiography.

In head and neck surgery, free-flap reconstruction using a microvascular anastomosis is an indispensable option after tumor ablation. Because the success of free-flap reconstruction is enhanced by rapid identification and salvage of failing flaps, postoperative monitoring of free flaps is essential. We describe a new technique using indocyanine green (ICG) near-infrared angiography and pinprick testing to monitor intraoral free flaps. A solution of ICG (Diagnogreen, 5 ml) was intravenously injected, and scanning was performed with a near-infrared video camera system. Thirty seconds after ICG i
