Urban environmental exposure as a factor in adaptive neuromodulation: a conceptual framework.

Urban neuromodulation and neurofeedback systems have become increasingly adaptive and closed-loop. However, they still focus primarily on brain signals and often ignore the urban areas where these signals happen. The framework introduced in this study integrates EEG, physiological measures, indicators of environmental exposures, and GIS spatial analysis. Our goal is to incorporate Local Climate Zone classification into one unified cycle of user-specific interpretation. Contrary to the typical methodology in digital exposomes and environmental neuroscience, where the individual-to-environment r

High Humidity Exacerbates Psoriasiform Skin Disease Relapse by Increasing Tissue-Resident Memory T Cells via Altering Skin Microbiota.

Psoriasis recurrence remains a common and difficult medical problem, while environmental humidity appears to have an impact on psoriasis morbidity. However, it remains unknown whether and how high humidity impacts psoriasis relapse. Using unique mouse models of psoriasis relapse, we found that high humidity exposure exacerbated psoriasis recurrence by increasing skin-resident memory CD8+ T (TRM) cells through a mechanism depending on its upregulation of IL-15Rα on keratinocytes. Keratinocyte-specific knockout of IL-15Rα or administrating soluble sIL-15Rα to block IL-15 abrogated these effects.

GIS, Remote Sensing and Machine Learning: Data Integration to Support the Management of Coastal Island Ecosystems.

Islands are important components of many coastal areas around the world; however, by virtue of their geographical isolation, the state of these ecosystems is often poorly known. To address the knowledge gap for the province of Nova Scotia, Canada, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing (RS), and machine learning (ML) were used to examine the status of nearly 4000 islands. We classified islands topographically and determined, based on 1 m resolution LiDAR, that approximately 70% are <2 m average elevation and highly vulnerable to partial or complete flooding under near-term regime

A statistical method for obtaining an hour-level design storm of urban stormwater source control.

In urban stormwater source control design, the current method statistically obtains the design target-daily rainfall relationship and uses daily rainfall as the design storm to calculate the size of source control. Since it lacks the rainfall duration needed for sizing calculations under the design storm, it cannot ensure that the design solution achieves the design target. To overcome this problem, this study proposes a statistical method to obtain an hour-level design storm. It includes hour-level event identification, the concept of design storm event set, and a method to obtain the design

Cross-over comparative study of cold-induced brown adipose tissue activity in Greenlandic Inuit and Danes: rationale, design, and methodology.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is essential for non-shivering thermogenesis, a key survival mechanism for Arctic populations exposed to chronic cold. As BAT dissipates energy as heat, it presents a potential target for improving cardiometabolic health and treating obesity. The Arctic Inuit represents a unique metabolic model due to distinct genetic and environmental adaptations. This study advances methods in cardiometabolic research by investigating BAT activation in Arctic Inuit and ethnic Danes under cold exposure. A comparative crossover study of 20 Inuit and Danes includes two sessions: (A) t

The sensitivity of rainfed agricultural crop yields to CO2 fertilization and its driving mechanisms in East Africa.

Rain-fed agriculture in East Africa faces growing threats from climate change and food insecurity. Exploring the sensitivity of major crop yields (maize, potato, sorghum, cassava) in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda to CO2 fertilization and its driving factors under global warming is crucial for ensuring food security. Using a CO2 time series dataset constructed from remote sensing and ground-based measurements, along with solar radiation, temperature, and NDVI data, the C-FIX model is applied to estimate gross primary productivity (GPP) from 2000 to 2021. Geographic detector is applied to analyze

Novel peptide inhibitor for the Chikungunya virus nsP2 protease: Identification and characterization.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an emerging pathogen affecting populations worldwide, with rapidly increasing infection rates. CHIKV, an arbovirus of the alphavirus genus, is predominantly found in tropical regions and transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Climate change has accelerated the global spread of these vectors, leading to outbreaks in non-tropical regions, including parts of Europe. The absence of antiviral therapies and the potential for co-infections with other viruses make CHIKV a significant public health concern. CHIKV replication relies on nsP2 cysteine protease activity to cleave its

The role of urban forest composition in modulating summertime air quality in Los Angeles.

In this period of rapid global urbanization and climate change, the public health value of urban trees is evident. Trees provide shade, sequester carbon dioxide, and remove air pollutants through deposition. However, some trees emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can react to form fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3). Because VOC emissions vary by tree species both in magnitude and composition, and pollutant removal capacity also varies depending on a tree's physical characteristics, discerning net air quality impacts (AQIs) must be done on a species-specific basis. Beyond environmental identity: Testing public support for novel carbon dioxide removal in Australia using structural modelling.

Climate change presents a significant environmental challenge, and novel carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies are increasingly recognised as critical strategies for mitigation. Although many of these technologies are still under development, support and governance remain uncertain. Public acceptance is key to large-scale CDR deployment, yet research on this topic is limited, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere. This study focuses on Australia, where interest in novel CDR is gaining momentum in both research and policy domains. We examine two key questions: (1) To what extent does the

Pathogenesis and seroprevalence of dengue virus in HIV-endemic regions: A global perspective.

Dengue virus (DENV), a globally prevalent flavivirus, is a growing threat in regions where HIV is endemic. The co-endemicity of HIV and dengue poses overlapping clinical challenges, particularly in low-resource settings where diagnostic capacity is limited. This review examines the epidemiological overlap, immunological interactions, and diagnostic difficulties associated with DENV infection in people living with HIV (PLWH). Seroprevalence studies reveal high rates of dengue exposure among PLWH in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, with increasing evidence of autochthonous

Enhancing carbon capture and utilization: mixotrophic growth of Clostridium luticellarii using methanol and hydrogen for efficient CO2 reduction.

Carbon capture and utilization remains a major challenge in mitigating climate change. Carbon dioxide (CO2) fixing microorganisms offer promising routes to convert CO2 emissions into valuable products. Clostridium luticellarii is a recently discovered acetogen capable of converting CO2 to acetic, butyric and isobutyric acids using H2 or methanol as electron donors. Both routes can use renewable electricity as primary energy input, but each has its limitations: While H2-based processes suffer from poor gas-to-liquid mass transfer and low product selectivity beyond acetic acid, methanol requires

Modeling and Feasibility Assessment of Mineral Carbonation Based on Biological pH Swing for Atmospheric CO2 Removal.

Mitigating climate change requires both the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. This study investigates a novel biological pH swing strategy for mineral carbonation at ambient conditions as a potential option for atmospheric CO2 removal. Through mathematical modeling, we evaluated a mineral carbonation system that utilized Desulfovibrio vulgaris and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans to achieve alternating sulfur reduction and oxidation, respectively, with the cyclic process to effect pH swing for promoting the dissolution of a silicate mineral and the

Atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and carbon monoxide (CO): Boon or Bane for plant metabolism and development?

Urban air pollution has been a global challenge world-wide. While urban vegetation or forest modelling can be useful in reducing the toxicities of the atmospheric gases by their absorption, the surge in gaseous pollutants negatively affects plant growth, thereby altering photosynthetic efficiency and harvest index. The present review analyses our current understanding of the toxic and beneficial effects of atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and carbon monoxide (CO) on plant growth and metabolism. The atmospheric levels of these gases vary considerably due to urbanizatio

Severe ozone pollution drives physiological stress in winter wheat: Evidence from satellite-based chlorophyll fluorescence analysis.

Understanding the impact of ozone (O3) pollution on photosynthesis is essential for estimating crop yields and ensuring food security. While remote sensing of Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) effectively assesses plant stress, most studies have focused on temperature and water deficits, with limited attention to O3-induced chlorophyll degradation. To address this gap, we utilized the SIF data from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) to investigate the response of winter wheat to severe O3 stress in China's primary wheat-producing region during 2019-2023, a period marked
