DNA metabarcoding has become a relatively common tool for studying consumption of plants by arthropod herbivores and identifying pollen collected by pollinating insects. However, studies using molecular gut content analysis to detect pollen-feeding in generalist predators are exceedingly rare. Pollen-feeding is known to be important to the nutritional ecology of many generalist predators and is particularly well studied in phytoseiid mites. In apples, generalist phytoseiids such as Typhlodromus caudiglans Schuster (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae) and the stigmaeid predator, Zetzellia mali (Ewing)

Insects lack adaptive immunity and rely exclusively on innate immune system for pathogen defense. However, the specific role of BmToll9-2, a key Toll receptor in the silkworm (Bombyx mori), in mediating immune responses, particularly against bacterial challenges in the larval fat body, remains incompletely understood. To address this gap, this study employed a combination of molecular approaches, including RNA interference (RNAi) targeting BmToll9-2, bacterial challenges with heat-inactivated Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive), and quantitative real-time

The Brown Planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål.) (Hemiptera: Delphinidae), is one of the most destructive pests of rice. Its reproductive and developmental traits are influenced by various environmental and biological factors including endosymbiotic microorganisms. Arsenophonus, a widespread endosymbiotic bacterium of insects, can affect host fitness and metabolic processes. This study investigates the role of Arsenophonus in modulating the developmental and reproductive traits of N. lugens fed on transgenic cry30Fa1 rice (KF30-14) and its parent variety Minghui 86 (MH86). The pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), is one of the most destructive pests of cotton, causing substantial yield losses and threatening the long-term sustainability of cotton cultivation in India. The introduction of transgenic Bt cotton expressing Cry1Ac and subsequently stacked Cry1Ac+Cry2Ab toxins initially provided effective control of bollworm infestations. However, over time, pink bollworm has developed significant resistance, not only to Bt toxins but also to several classes of chemical insecticides, posing a major challenge to effective management. Insecticide bioassay

Seasonal environmental variation may be associated with heat-shock protein (HSP) transcription in insects with annual diapause cycles. The Sunn pest, Eurygaster integriceps (Puton), occupies contrasting field and shelter habitats across its univoltine life cycle. We combined transcriptome-guided annotation, motif and conserved-domain analysis, localization prediction, fragment-based structural modeling, phylogenetic placement, and RT-qPCR to characterize partial Hsp60, Hsp70, and Hsp90 sequences and compare their whole-body transcript abundance among 4 field-sampled groups and between sexes. Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to control weeds, insects, and diseases that threaten crop yields. However, their extensive use raises concerns about environmental impacts, particularly in aquatic ecosystems, which are vulnerable to contamination through runoff and leaching. To assess the toxicity of pesticides to aquatic plants, we applied an optimized automated duckweed (Wolffia globosa) frond-counting tool based on the StarDist technique. Using this method, we tested twenty-eight commonly used pesticides, including herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides effects on duckweed growt

INTRODUCTION: Zika virus (ZIKV) causes congenital disease and neurological complications, yet no approved vaccines or antivirals are available. Integrin β4 (ITGB4) has been identified as an entry receptor for ZIKV.
METHODS: Recombinant human ITGB4 ectodomain was expressed using a baculovirus-insect cell system and used to immunize BALB/c mice. Hybridoma screening identified monoclonal antibody 7C3. Binding affinity to ITGB4 was determined by biolayer interferometry. Epitope relationships between 7C3 and the previously reported anti-ITGB4 antibody 13H10 were assessed by competitive binding ass

The diamide insecticide chlorantraniliprole (CAP) is widely applied for pest control, and its environmental residues pose toxic risks to non-target species. However, the mechanisms underlying the developmental toxicity of environmentally relevant chronic exposure to trace concentrations of CAP in non-target lepidopteran insects remain poorly characterized. Here, we used the silkworm (Bombyx mori) as a lepidopteran model to investigate the toxic effects of chronic exposure to trace concentrations of CAP on development and physiology. Chronic exposure to trace concentrations of CAP significantly

Helminth infections impose a substantial global health burden, with parasite glycoconjugates and their glycan epitopes playing critical roles in host immune recognition and immunomodulation. However, systematic investigation of structure-activity relationships is impeded by the structural complexity and heterogeneity of helminth glycans, limiting the availability of homogeneous materials. Here, we report a modular chemoenzymatic strategy for generating eleven structurally defined helminth glycans bearing signature epitopes, including LacdiNAc (LDN) and fucosylated LacdiNAc (LDNF) terminal moti

Psychodinae, or 'drain flies', constitute a subfamily of insects within the Psychodidae family, commonly found in human-modified environments. Although generally considered harmless, they have been identified as potential carriers of pathogenic microorganisms. These flies may contribute to contamination in healthcare settings and could therefore be involved in healthcare-associated infections. To investigate the potential of Psychodinae as reservoirs of Gram-negative antimicrobial resistant bacteria in a hospital in the state of Rio de Janeiro, specimens were collected, processed, macerated, a

BACKGROUND: Midges are widely distributed globally. They can transmit numerous serious diseases when biting hosts. It is crucial for developing more effective midge monitoring and control methods to better understand how host volatiles attract and repel these blood-sucking insects.
RESULTS: In this work, volatile substances from human skin were detected by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 25 compounds in relatively high contents were identified from the gauzes adsorbing volatiles of eight volunteers, including ketones, aldehydes, alcohols and acids. Nonanal, 6

Clothianidin (CLO) is a second-generation neonicotinoid insecticide which is highly effective at killing insects by specifically activating their nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). Recent studies have shown that even low doses of CLO can cause behavioral abnormalities in mice and exhibit multisystemic toxic effects, including reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, and hepatotoxicity, further disrupting lipid metabolism homeostasis. However, the effects of CLO on hepatic lipid metabolism remain unclear at present. This study used male C57 mice as a model and administered CLO at four dos

The whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is economically one of the most threatening pests in tomato cultivation, which not only causes direct damage but also transmits many viruses. Breeding whitefly-resistant tomato varieties is a promising and environmentally friendly method to control whitefly populations in the field. Accumulating evidence from tomato and other model systems demonstrates that flavonoids contribute to plant resistance to herbivorous insects. Previously, we found that high flavonoid-producing tomato line deterred whitefly oviposition and settling behaviours, and

Diapause is an adaptive developmental arrest commonly utilized by animals to cope with seasonal changes. Central to this process are hormonal events that bridge photoperiodic cues and physiological changes. In insect reproductive diapause, the absence of juvenile hormone (JH) serves as the primary endocrine event that governs key diapause traits, including ovarian developmental arrest and lipid accumulation. Conventionally, it is believed that the effects of JH are conveyed through the receptor Methoprene-tolerant (Met) and its transcriptional factor Krüppel homolog 1 (Kr-h1). However, our stu

The escalating use of nanodiamonds (NDs) has raised concerns about their ecotoxicological impact, prompting exploration of therapeutic interventions. This paper pioneers the examination of Vitamin B12-conjugated sericin (VB12-SER) as a potential therapeutic approach against ND-induced toxicity in darkling beetles (Blaps polychresta). The study analyzes mortality rates and organ-specific effects, covering the testis, ovary, and midgut, before and after treatments. Following exposure to 10 mg NDs/g body weight, within a subgroup of individuals termed ND2 with a mortality rate below 50%, two ther

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The gonadotropins luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and their receptors are major regulators of reproduction in mammals and are absent in insects. We previously established transgenic Drosophila lines expressing a constitutively active human LH receptor variant (LHRD578Y) and the wild-type receptor (LHRwt; inactive in the absence of an agonist). That study showed that ubiquitously expression of LHRD578Y-but not of LHRwt-resulted in pupal lethality, and targeted expression in midline cells resulted in thorax/bristles defects. To further study

The weaning phase in piglets causes significant physiological stress, disrupts intestinal integrity and reduces productivity, necessitating strategies to improve intestinal health and nutrient absorption. While current research highlights the role of diet in mitigating these adverse effects, identifying effective dietary supplements remains a challenge. This study evaluated the effects of Hermetia illucens (HI) larvae meal and astaxanthin (AST) on the intestinal histology of weaned piglets. In a controlled experiment, 48 weaned piglets were divided into six groups and received varying levels o

Herbicides have been intensively used for weed control, raising concerns about their potentially adverse effects on non-target organisms. Research on the effects of these common agrochemicals on beneficial insects and the ecosystem services they provide (e.g., predation and pollination) is scarce. Therefore, we tested whether a commercial formulation comprising a mixture of mesotrione and atrazine was detrimental to adult females and larvae of the Neotropical predatory social wasp Polistes satan, which is an effective natural enemy of crop pests. Wasps were individually fed syrups contaminated

BACKGROUND: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) seeks to combine multiple management strategies for optimal pest control. One method that is successfully employed in IPM is the use of beneficial organisms. However, in severe circumstances when pest insects exceed threshold limits, insecticides may still need to be implemented. Thus, understanding the effects of insecticides on biocontrol agents, such as parasitoid wasps, is paramount to ensure sustainable agroecosystems. Sublethal effects of the bioinsecticide spinosyn, a mixture of the bacterial Saccharopolyspora spinosa (Mertz and Yao) fermenta
