Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma confirmed by lung biopsy.

Intravascular lymphoma is a very rare form of large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which is characterized by selective growth of lymphoma cells within the lumina of small blood vessels. We report a 64-year-old woman visited hospital because of persistent cough, intermittent high fever as high as 38.7 °C and occasional shortness of breath. Her chest CT showed left upper lobe pneumonia and tuberculosis skin test (PPD test) was positive. She was suspected with tuberculosis and treated with anti-tuberculosis drugs. However, her symptoms and general condition deteriorated, and she visited our hospit

Adverse effects of antipsychotics on micro-vascular endothelial cells of the human blood-brain barrier.

Although the mechanisms of action of antipsychotics (APs) on neuronal function are well understood, very little is known about their effects on cells of the blood-brain barrier (BBB); one function of which is to limit the access of these amphiphilic compounds to the central nervous system. To address this question we have investigated the cytological and functional effects of four APs: chlorpromazine (CLP), haloperidol (HAL), risperidone (RIS) and clozapine (CLZ), at concentrations typical of high therapeutic dosage on a human brain microvascular endothelial cell (HBMEC) model of the BBB. Tumour necrosis factor α enhances CCL2 and ICAM-1 expression in peripheral nerve microvascular endoneurial endothelial cells.

Recruitment and trafficking of autoreactive leucocytes across the BNB (blood-nerve barrier) is an early pathological insult in GBS (Guillain-Barré syndrome), an aggressive autoimmune disorder of the PNS (peripheral nervous system). Whereas the aetiology and pathogenesis of GBS remain unclear, pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNFα (tumour necrosis factor α), are reported to be elevated early in the course of GBS and may initiate nerve injury by activating the BNB. Previously, we reported that disrupting leucocyte trafficking in vivo therapeutically attenuates the course of an established a

Does microvascular disease predict macrovascular events in type 2 diabetes?

AIM: Population studies suggest a link between albuminuria, reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and retinopathy and macrovascular events in type 2 diabetes. The aim of this review was to investigate whether this association extended to the presence of any diabetic microvascular complication. METHOD AND RESULTS: PUBMED was searched from 1999 to 2010 using the terms 'albuminuria', 'nephropathy', 'chronic kidney disease', 'estimated GFR', 'retinopathy', 'autonomic neuropathy', 'peripheral neuropathy', or 'microvascular' and 'cardiovascular disease', 'stroke', 'coronary heart disease' or 'pe

Comparative histopathology of mice infected with the 17XL and 17XNL strains of Plasmodium yoelii.

Plasmodium yoelii 17XL was used to investigate the mechanism of Plasmodium falciparum-caused cerebral malaria, although its histological effect on other mouse organs is still unclear. Here, histological examination was performed on mice infected with P. yoelii 17XL; the effect of P. yoelii 17XL infection on anemia and body weight loss, as well as its lesions in the brain, liver, kidney, lung, and spleen, also was investigated. Plasmodium yoelii 17XL-infected red blood cells were sequestered in the microcirculation of the brain and in the kidney. Compared with the nonlethal P. yoelii 17XNL stra

Molecular mechanisms of microvascular failure in central nervous system injury--synergistic roles of NKCC1 and SUR1/TRPM4.

Microvascular failure largely underlies the damaging secondary events that accompany traumatic brain injury (TBI). Changes in capillary permeability result in the extravasation of extracellular fluid, inflammatory cells, and blood, thereby producing cerebral edema, inflammation, and progressive secondary hemorrhage (PSH). Recent work in rat models of TBI and stroke have implicated 2 ion transport proteins expressed in brain endothelial cells as critical mediators of edema formation: the constitutively expressed Na(+)-K(+)-2Cl(-) cotransporter, NKCC1, and the trauma/ischemia-induced SUR1-regula

A combination of Chinese herbs, Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus and Angelica sinensis, improved renal microvascular insufficiency in 5/6 nephrectomized rats.

Chronic renal ischemia and hypoxia in the tubulointerstitium are involved in the mechanisms of progressive chronic kidney disease. Previous studies showed that the decoction of a combination of two Chinese herbs, Astragalus membmnaceus var. mongholicus and Angelica sinensis (A & A) has antifibrotic effects through multiple pathways in different animal models. In this study, remnant kidney model was employed to investigate whether A & A affect the expression of VEGF, the density of the renal microvasculature and thus alleviate the renal injury. Rats were divided randomly into four groups: sham

Akiferidin suppresses cervical cancer growth and angiogenesis via the VEGF/DLL4-Notch pathway.

Cervical cancer remains a major gynecological malignancy with a substantial global burden, particularly in low- and middle-income regions. Tumor angiogenesis driven by the VEGF/DLL4-Notch axis promotes cervical cancer progression, and the anti-VEGF antibody bevacizumab shows limited clinical benefit because of acquired resistance. Our prior work identified anti-tumor activity in the Xinjiang-native medicinal plant Ferula songorica Pall. ex Spreng, but the effects and mechanisms of its principal bioactive metabolite, akiferidin, in cervical cancer have not been defined. Here, we evaluated akife

A central limit theorem for the Euler method for SDEs with irregular drifts.

BACKGROUND: Retinal vessel caliber is strongly associated with systemic blood pressure (BP); however, the causal relationship between retinal vascular caliber and BP remains unclear. Understanding this relationship is essential for advancing predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM) approaches to effectively manage hypertension and its related complications. WORKING HYPOTHESIS: Microvessel morphology is causally related to blood pressure. By integrating genome-wide association studies, Mendelian randomization analysis, transcriptomic data, and multivariate genomic approaches, t

The effect of Polybrominated diphenyl ethers at the fetal blood-brain-barrier: evaluation using a microphysiological system.

BACKGROUND: Glutamate dysregulation leading to neuronal excitotoxicity and neuroinflammation are associated with neurological disorders, specifically autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in preterm neonates. The lack of physiologically relevant in vitro models has limited mechanistic understanding of glutamate dysregulation and neuroinflammation during pregnancy. This study evaluated the effect of environmental pollutant and flame retardant, Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE) 99 and 47, on cell viability, glutamate dysregulation, and neuroinflammation using a microphysiologic system (MPS) of hum

Exosomes secreted from human-derived adipose stem cells prevent progression of osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) primarily affects young individuals and is a leading cause of total hip arthroplasty in this population. Joint-preserving regenerative therapies involving core decompression (CD), enhanced with cells, growth factors, and bone substitutes, have been developed but lack extensive validation. Exosomes are emerging as a promising regenerative therapy. Human adipose stem cell (hADSC)-derived exosomes exhibit angiogenic and wound-healing effects on damaged and diseased tissues, suggesting their potential efficacy in treating early-stage ONFH. We ai

SM22α cell-specific HIF stabilization mitigates hyperoxia-induced neonatal lung injury.

Though survival rates for preterm infants are improving, the incidence of chronic lung disease of infancy, or bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), remains high. Histologically, BPD is characterized by larger and fewer alveoli. Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) may be protective in the context of hyperoxia-induced lung injury, but the cell-specific effects of HIF expression in neonatal lung injury remain unknown. Thus, we sought to determine whether HIF stabilization in SM22α-expressing cells can limit hyperoxia-induced neonatal lung injury. We generated SM22α-specific HIF-1α-stabilized mice (SM22α

Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Simulation of Atherosclerosis Based on a Novel Surgeon's View.

This paper deals with the mathematical modeling of atherosclerosis based on a novel hypothesis proposed by a surgeon, Prof. Dr. Axel Haveric … Hence in the new hypothesis, the root of atherosclerotic vessel is perceived as the malfunction of microvessels that nourish the vessel. A large number of clinical observation support this hypothesis. Recently and highly related to this work, and after the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most prevalent disease in the lungs are attributed to the atherosclerotic …

Control of vasogenic edema in a brain tumor model: comparison between dexamethasone and superoxide dismutase.

OBJECTIVE: The production of prostaglandin (PG) within brain tumors probably generates excessive amounts of oxygen free radicals that may disrupt microvessel permeability within the tumor and in the adjacent brain. We evaluated the effect of systemic therapy with recombinant human manganese-superoxide dismutase (r-hMnSOD) and with dexamethasone on the vascular permeability (VP) of a brain tumor and the adjacent brain. Treatment effect was also evaluated in control animals subjected to mild penetration injury. METHODS: Fischer rats were injected stereotactically with either 10(5) cells of mali
