Biomimetic 3D-printed bilayered scaffold with stem cell delivery for rabbit vaginal regeneration.

Traditional biological scaffolds for vaginal reconstruction often fail to restore the physiological bilayered structure of vaginal tissue, leading to post-operative complications such as contraction, stenosis, and fibrosis. To address this, we developed a biomimetic bilayered vaginal scaffold using decellularized porcine vaginal extracellular matrix (vECM), gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA), and silk fibroin (SF) hydrogels. The optimized bioink (vECM/GelMA/SF) was characterized via SEM, rheology, FTIR, swelling tests, and H&E staining, confirming its morphology, stability, and biocompatibility. Rab

Small intestine submucosa decorated 3D printed scaffold accelerated diabetic bone regeneration by ameliorating the microenvironment.

The 3D printed scaffolds constructed from polymers have shown significant potential in the field of bone defect regeneration. However, the efficacy of these scaffolds can be markedly reduced in certain pathological conditions like diabetes, where an altered inflammatory microenvironment and diminished small blood vessels complicate the integration of these polymers with the host tissue. In this study, the bioactivity of a 3D-printed poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) scaffold is enhanced through the integration of hydroxyapatite (HA), icariin (ICA), and small intestine submucosa (SIS), a form o

Custom silicone Y-stents for the management of anastomotic stenosis in lung transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Airway stenting may be needed to manage anastomotic complications in lung transplant recipients. Conventional stenting strategies may be inadequate due to anatomic variations between the recipient and donor or involvement of both the anastomosis and lobar bronchi. METHODS: We investigated the efficacy of 3D-designed patient-specific silicone Y-stents in managing this scenario. 9 patients with complex airway stenosis underwent custom stent insertion after either failing traditional management strategies or having anatomy not suitable for conventional stents. CT images were uploaded

3D printed polylactic acid/polyethylene glycol/bredigite nanocomposite scaffold enhances bone tissue regeneration via promoting osteogenesis and angiogenesis.

Recently, the fabrication of personalized scaffolds with high accuracy has been developed through 3D printing technology. In the current study, polylactic acid/polyethylene glycol (PLA/PEG) composite scaffolds with varied weight percentages (0, 5, 10, 20 and 30 %) of bredigite nanoparticles (B) were fabricated using the 3D printing and then characterized through scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy. The addition of B nanoparticles up to 20 wt% to PLA/PEG scaffold increased the compressive strength (from 7.59 to 13.84 MPa) and elastic modulus (from 142.42 to

The 3D-Printed Custom Elbow Prosthesis for Salvage Treatment of Complex Intra-Articular Distal Humerus Fracture Malunion.

Intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus are complex injuries that often require surgery with the goal of restoring elbow range-of-motion and function. Open reduction and internal fixation has been the preferred surgical modality; however, restoration of the medial and/or lateral columns can be complicated in fractures involving a major loss of the articular surface and bony structure. Over the past decade, 3-dimensional (3D) printing has made significant advances in the field of orthopedic surgery, specifically in guiding surgeon preoperative planning. Recently, the incorporation of 3D

3D printed sodium alginate/gelatin/tannic acid/calcium chloride scaffolds laden bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells to repair defective thyroid cartilage plate.

Due to the absence of blood vessels, cartilage exhibits extremely limited self-repair capacity. Currently, repairing laryngeal cartilage defects, resulting from conditions such as laryngeal tumors, injury, and congenital structural abnormalities, remains a significant challenge in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. Previous research has often focused on enhancing the mechanical properties of synthetic materials. However, their low biological activity and weak cell adhesion necessitate compensatory measures. This study aims to capitalize on the advantages of natural materi

Development of 3D Printed Bruch's Membrane-Mimetic Substance for the Maturation of Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells.

Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a monolayer of the pigmented cells that lies on the thin extracellular matrix called Bruch's membrane. This monolayer is the main component of the outer blood-retinal barrier (BRB), which plays a multifunctional role. Due to their crucial roles, the damage of this epithelium causes a wide range of diseases related to retinal degeneration including age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and Stargardt disease. Unfortunately, there is presently no cure for these diseases. Clinically implantable RPE for humans is under development, and there is

A Novel Aortic Regurgitation Model from Cusp Prolapse with Hemodynamic Validation Using an Ex Vivo Left Heart Simulator.

Although ex vivo simulation is a valuable tool for surgical optimization, a disease model that mimics human aortic regurgitation (AR) from cusp prolapse is needed to accurately examine valve biomechanics. To simulate AR, four porcine aortic valves were explanted, and the commissure between the two largest leaflets was detached and re-implanted 5 mm lower to induce cusp prolapse. Four additional valves were tested in their native state as controls. All valves were tested in a heart simulator while hemodynamics, high-speed videography, and echocardiography data were collected. Our AR model succe

Challenges in the design and regulatory approval of 3D-printed surgical implants: a two-case series.

BACKGROUND: Additive manufacturing or three-dimensional (3D) printing of metal implants can provide novel solutions for difficult-to-treat conditions, yet legislation concerning patient-specific implants complicates the implementation of these techniques in daily practice. In this Article, we share our acquired knowledge of the logistical and legal challenges associated with the use of patient-specific 3D-printed implants to treat spinal instabilities. METHODS: Two patients with semiurgent cases of spinal instability presented to our hospital in the Netherlands. In case 1, severe kyphotic def

Optical coherence tomography: Translation from 3D-printed vascular models of the anterior cerebral circulation to the first human images of implanted surface modified flow diverters.

BACKGROUND: The new generation of flow diverters includes a surface modification with a synthetic biocompatible polymer, which makes the device more biocompatible and less thrombogenic. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) can be used to visualize perforators, stent wall apposition, and intra-stent thrombus. Unfortunately real world application of this technology has been limited because of the limited navigability of these devices in the intracranial vessels. In this report, we share our experience of using 3D-printed neurovascular anatomy models to simulate and test the navigability of a comme

Single centre experience with transapical transcatheter mitral valve implantation.

OBJECTIVES: A transcatheter heart valve technique can be used in failed mitral valve repairs with annuloplasty rings, deterioriated bioprostheses and in mitral annular calcification, all serving as 'docking stations' for balloon-expandable valves. Specially designed transcatheter mitral valve platforms are used in ongoing studies for native mitral valve regurgitation. We present our single centre experience with transcatheter mitral valve implantation-transapical approach procedures in eleven patients. METHODS: Eleven patients were treated between 2011 and 2016. They had severe mitral regurgi
