BACKGROUND: The presence of lymph node metastases is an important prognostic marker with regard to non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Assessment of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) for the presence of tumor may improve staging. Our objective was to develop an optical noninvasive imaging tool that would permit intraoperative SLN mapping and provide real-time visual feedback for image-guided localization and resection.
METHODS: Invisible near-infrared (NIR) light penetrates relatively deeply into tissue and background autofluorescence is low. We have developed a NIR fluorescence imaging system th

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Near-infrared (NIR) technology appears promising as a noninvasive technique for breast cancer screening and diagnosis. The technology capitalizes on the relative transparency of human tissue in this spectral range and its sensitivity to the main components of the breast: water, lipid, and hemoglobin. In this study, the authors report quantitative measurements of these components and the functional contrast between healthy and diseased tissue.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A four-wavelength time domain optical imaging system was used to perform noninvasive NIR measurements i

To clarify the effects of inhalational anesthesia on cerebral circulation in patients with Moyamoya disease, the authors measured regional cortical blood flow (CoBF), jugular bulb oxygen saturation (SjO2), and frontal regional oxygen saturation (rSO2) by near infra-red spectroscopy under total intravenous and inhalational anesthesia in 13 patients undergoing revascularization procedures. Cortical blood flow decreased in some regions under inhaled anesthesia in all cases, and the mean value decreased significantly (p<0.01). Patients' SjO2 levels rose during inhalational anesthesia in 10 of 11 c

INTRODUCTION: Single-modality motor rehabilitation is often insufficient to address the complex functional restoration needs of patients with chronic ankle injuries following surgery. Research indicates that non-invasive neuromodulation techniques, such as intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS), may enhance motor recovery by increasing cortical excitability and facilitating neural network reorganisation. Compared with exercise therapy alone, this study aims to explore the rehabilitation efficacy of combining iTBS with exercise therapy in patients with chronic ankle injuries following surg

BACKGROUND: Early detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is crucial for preventing Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aims to explore alterations in brain co-functional connectivity between cognitively healthy individuals and those with cognitive impairment during a verbal fluency task (VFT) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The investigation examines changes in brain activation patterns in both MCI patients and healthy controls during the VFT and 1-back task, and identifies correlations between cognitive function and brain activation areas using fNIRS technology.

Neuroendovascular therapy using distal/trans-radial artery access (d/TRA) has attracted attention as a less invasive procedure. We have selected dTRA or TRA in all cases of carotid artery stenting (CAS). In recent years, TRA has been actively selected for mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischaemic stroke (MT for AIS) and Onyx embolisation for arteriovenous malformations. We compared the patient background, surgical strategy, perioperative complications, and outcome in 41 patients who underwent CAS in the first period (Apr 2017-Feb 2019) and 12 patients in the second period (Apr 2020-Feb 2022)

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive neuroregulation techniques have been demonstrated to improve certain motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the currently employed regulatory techniques primarily concentrate on stimulating single target points, neglecting the functional regulation of networks and circuits. The supplementary motor area (SMA) has a significant value in motor control, and its functionality is often impaired in patients with PD. The matching SMA-primary motor cortex (M1) paired transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment protocol, which benefits patients by modulating

BACKGROUND: Hwa-Byung is a culturally bound syndrome prevalent in Korea, characterized by intense emotional distress and physical symptoms related to suppressed anger. Patients frequently report experiencing chest tightness, heat sensations, and globus pharyngeus (the sensation of a lump in the throat). These physical symptoms often accompany psychological distress and can exacerbate the sense of frustration and helplessness associated with the condition. The distinctive presentation of these symptoms highlights the necessity for therapeutic interventions that address both the emotional and ph

In the 50 years of my membership in ISOTT, I, Edwin M Nemoto, have enjoyed the application of many of the technologies developed in our society including microelectrodes for pH, PO2, and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in the measurement of tissue oxygenation and metabolism. The greatest joy has been the number of great scientists I have had the pleasure of knowing and exchanging scientific ideas with across the United States, Europe, and Asia. This will be the enduring legacy of ISOTT for me personally as we continue beyond our half-century existence.Every organ in our body, including the t

BACKGROUND: Over 55 million adults are living with dementia globally, which is projected to reach 157 million by 2050. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a syndrome of memory impairment with intact activities of daily living, may precede dementia by several years. Around 5-15% of individuals with MCI convert to dementia annually. Novel treatments which delay progression of MCI to dementia are urgently needed. Transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation (tVNS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that targets the vagus nerve. Importantly, tVNS has been shown to improve cognition in healthy volu

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) secondary to perinatal asphyxia occurs when the brain does not receive enough oxygen and blood. A surrogate marker for "intact survival" is necessary for the successful management of HIE. The severity of HIE can be classified based on clinical presentation, including the presence of seizures, using a clinical classification scale called Sarnat staging; however, Sarnat staging is subjective, and the score changes over time. Furthermore, seizures are difficult to detect clinically and are associated with a poor prognosis. Therefore, a tool for continuous mon

Red and near-infrared emission is a highly desirable feature for fluorescent nanoparticles in biological applications mainly due to longer wavelengths more easily being able to deeply penetrate tissues, organs, skin, and other organic components, while less autofluorescence interference would be produced. Additionally, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) that contain unique optical and electrical features have been targeted for their use in cell labeling applications as well as environmental analysis. Their most desirable features come in the form of low toxicity and biocompatibility; however, GQDs a

Photobiomodulation (PBM) describes the use of low irradiance light in the red to near-infrared wavelength range to stimulate biological effects in tissue, and many biological and spectroscopic techniques are used to study PBM. However, these techniques focus on the products or downstream effects rather than the electronic transitions that initiate the PBM processes. This study presents a novel approach to studying low irradiance light exposures on individual proteins and/or protein complexes by combining a continuous wave (CW) laser diode with femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS

In recent years, our understanding of motor learning, neuroplasticity and functional recovery after the occurrence of brain lesion has grown significantly. Novel findings in basic neuroscience have provided an impetus for research in motor rehabilitation. The brain reveals a spectrum of intrinsic capacities to react as a highly dynamic system which can change the properties of its neural circuits. This brain plasticity can lead to an extreme degree of spontaneous recovery and rehabilitative training may modify and boost the neuronal plasticity processes. Animal studies have extended these find

BACKGROUND: High external loads are typically prioritised in resistance training (RT), but low-load RT (<50% 1 repetition maximum (RM)) has gained attention for its practical and physiological advantages. While mechanical tension and metabolic perturbation are key drivers of hypertrophic adaptations, the mechanisms underlying effective thresholds for low-load RT remain unclear.
PURPOSE: To investigate the physiological responses, fatigue, and recovery during concentric-only RT performed to failure across a spectrum of % 1RM, with particular focus on the potential relevance of the critical loa

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral edema associated with diabetic ketoacidosis is an uncommon but severe complication of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus with unclear pathophysiology. We sought to determine whether cerebral edema in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis was related to changes in cerebral blood flow, autoregulation, regional cerebral saturation, or S100B.
DESIGN: Prospective case series.
SETTING: Pediatric intensive care unit of a tertiary children's hospital.
PATIENTS: Six patients with diabetic ketoacidosis and altered mental status, requiring computed tomographic scan of the head.

For monitoring of concussion, brain function, organ condition and other medical applications, what is needed is a non-invasive method of monitoring tissue metabolism. MRI-based functional imaging technology detects changes in blood oxygenation, a correlate of neural activity, and thus may offer a prediction of prognosis in cases of concussion and other cerebral traumas. Yet, potential relationships between perturbations to cerebral metabolism and patient outcomes cannot be effectively exploited clinically because we lack a practical, low-cost, non-invasive means to monitor cerebral oxygenation

Occurrence of microplastics (MP) in natural paddy fields and its impact are less studied. This study reports the abundance of MP in two paddy fields of Kerala, India, cultivating rice crops, 'Pokkali' and 'Uma' crops, which are vital to Kerala's food security and climate resilience. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses confirmed the presence of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) fragments as major MP in the surface water of paddy fields during vegetative (transplantation) and ripening (near harvesting) phases. MP density in the vegetative phase of 'Pokkali' (1370 ± 468

Hypertension-related changes in brain function place individuals at higher risk for cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. The existing functional neuroimaging literature has identified important neural and behavioural differences between normotensive and hypertensive individuals. However, previously-used methods (i.e. magnetic resonance imaging, functional near-infrared spectroscopy) rely on neurovascular coupling, which is a useful but indirect measure of neuronal activity. Furthermore, most studies fail to distinguish between controlled and uncontrolled hypertensive individuals, who
