Quality of care received by children with suspected appendicitis in the UK National Health Service.

INTRODUCTION: Appendicitis is one of the most common emergency surgical pathologies in childhood. This study used data from the Children's Acute Surgical Abdomen Programme study to describe compliance with published standards of care and the relationship between care delivery and 30-day postoperative morbidity for children aged 1-16 y undergoing appendicectomy. METHODS: Data were collected from 80 hospitals and this included the type of care delivered, the setting in which care was provided and patient level factors. Bivariable and multivariable analysis was undertaken to identify association

[Taeniasis and appendicitis: a rare parasitic connection].

Taeniasis, primarily caused by Taenia solium or Taenia saginata, is the most common zoonotic infection affecting the gastrointestinal tract. … fection. The patient was prescribed Albendazole 400 mg daily for three days, underwent laparoscopic appendectomy, and made a full recovery. This case highlights the significance of considering Taenia as a potential causative agent in appendicitis. Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for parasitic infections in patients presenting with gastroin …

Clinical features and outcomes of appendiceal neuroendocrine tumours: 10 year audit from the Irish NET Centre of Excellence.

Appendiceal neuroendocrine tumours (aNETs) are rare neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract often diagnosed incidentally at the time of appendicectomy. Appendicectomy is considered curative in the majority of cases but guidelines recommend right-sided hemicolectomy (RHC) for those with specific high-risk features despite no data supporting a survival benefit. We performed a retrospective search of multi-disciplinary tumour board and pathology databases from 2012 to 2022 to identify cases of aNET treated at our centre. Follow-up data were obtained from the electronic healthcare records. A total

Imaging pediatric acute appendicitis during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic: collateral damage is variable.

BACKGROUND: Since coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a worldwide pandemic in March 2020, many authors have noted the collateral damage on non-COVID-19-related illnesses. These indirect effects of the pandemic have resulted in people presenting later and with more severe stages of disease, even if their diagnoses are not directly related to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. OBJECTIVE: We studied these indirect effects of COVID-19 on the imaging workup and outcomes for pediatric patients at our center who had acute appendicitis during the pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS

Appendicitis with concurrent COVID-19 infection in a patient during the third trimester of pregnancy.

This article presents an unusual case of appendicitis in pregnancy complicated by the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). The novel coronavirus has affected the way medicine is practised across most parts of the world with over 160 000 000 global cases to date. Tackling management of these cases is more complex when other pathological processes are ongoing. Appendicitis is a common occurrence in pregnancy, with most obstetric centres seeing about one or two cases a year. Though maternal morbidity and mortality are relatively unimpacted by this event, fetal loss and preterm labour are common sequel

Unusual presentation of De Garengeot hernia.

De Garengeot hernia describes a rare phenomenon in which a vermiform appendix is found in a femoral hernia sac. We describe a case of De Garengeot hernia presenting as a groin lump associated with loss of appetite, weight loss and fatigue. A 72-year-old woman was referred to our rapid access 2-week clinic as isolated lymphadenopathy with a 4-week history of a gradual right groin swelling accompanied by an unintentional weight loss, lethargy and anorexia. An urgent excisional lymph node biopsy was performed preceding the CT scan of the chest, abdomen and pelvis. The biopsy showed a shaving of a

The vermiform appendix impacts the risk of developing Parkinson's disease.

The pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD) involves the accumulation of aggregated α-synuclein, which has been suggested to begin in the gastrointestinal tract. Here, we determined the capacity of the appendix to modify PD risk and influence pathogenesis. In two independent epidemiological datasets, involving more than 1.6 million individuals and over 91 million person-years, we observed that removal of the appendix decades before PD onset was associated with a lower risk for PD, particularly for individuals living in rural areas, and delayed the age of PD onset. We also found that the healt

Amyand's hernia detected incidentally in two patients.

The appendix is rarely present inside the inguinal hernia sac. The risk of appendicitis increases in these patients since the blood supply to the appendix can be impaired. The condition is frequently asymptomatic, and even if symptomatic it gives rise to non-specific symptoms. There is no specific laboratory finding. Diagnosis is frequently made with radiological imaging. We report two cases diagnosed as Amyand's hernia with CT.

Differentiating perforated from non-perforated appendicitis on contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: The role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in pediatric appendicitis is increasing; MRI findings predictive of appendiceal perforation have not been specifically evaluated. OBJECTIVE: To assess the performance of MRI in differentiating perforated from non-perforated appendicitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of pediatric patients undergoing contrast-enhanced MRI and subsequent appendectomy was performed, with surgicopathological confirmation of perforation. Appendiceal diameter and the following 10 MRI findings were assessed: appendiceal restricted diffusion, w…

A history of the treatment of appendicitis in children: lessons learned.

During the latter half of the 19th century, surgeons increasingly reported performing appendicectomies. Fitz from Harvard, Groves from Canada and Tait from Britain all recorded successful removal of the appendix. McBurney described the point of maximal tenderness in classic appendicitis and also the muscle-splitting incision centred on this point. Priority is given to McArthur in describing the lateral muscle-splitting incision. The direction of the cutaneous incision was later modified by Elliott and Lanz. Incisions that healed well were essential to recovery. Appendicectomy became a 'fashion
