Genital Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

Genital allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is an uncommon disorder, yet it severely impairs the quality of life for both men and women. Because of cultural taboos, many patients self-treat and delay proper diagnosis before presenting to a provider. Diagnosis is further confounded by irritant contact dermatitis and other genital dermatoses, which can predispose to skin barrier dysfunction and allergen penetration. Genital ACD can present acutely with erythematous erosions and pruritus or chronically with lichenification. Patch testing helps determine the diagnosis and provide relief for the pati

Prevalence of Contact Allergens in Personal Care Products for Babies and Children.

BACKGROUND: Personal care products marketed for babies and children are often regarded as "safe" or "gentle." However, little is known about the prevalence of contact allergens in these types of products. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the prevalence of important sensitizers in personal care products marketed for babies and children. A secondary objective of this study was to determine whether a product's cost correlates with content of sensitizing ingredients. METHODS: The ingredient lists of 533 unique personal care products were analyzed for presence of fragrance, betaines, propylene glyc

Risk Assessment of the Skin Sensitization Induction Potential of Kathon CG in Rinse-off and Leave-on Personal Care and Cosmetic Products.

BACKGROUND: Kathon CG is a commonly used cosmetic-grade preservative that contains active ingredients methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) and methylisothiazolinone (MI). OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to perform a skin sensitization induction risk assessment of daily exposure to Kathon CG after use of various personal care and cosmetic products. METHODS: We calculated an estimated daily consumer exposure level for rinse-off and leave-on products using the amount of product applied per application, number of applications per day, a retention factor, the MCI/MI concentration, and body surfa

Moisturizers: A Comparison Based on Allergens and Economic Value.

BACKGROUND: The economic burden of cosmetics, such as moisturizers, has been increasing. Despite the high price of some market moisturizers, there have been no studies evaluating the allergenicity of these products. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential allergens within moisturizers based on economic value, by analyzing the substances found in moisturizers available online at the largest drugstore chain-CVS Health (CVS Health, Woonsocket, RI). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, ingredients found in 50 expensive and 50 inexpensive moisturizers were matched with s

A Retrospective Study of Aimed Patch Testing With Aqueous Nickel Sulfate Hexahydrate at 30% and 15% in Patients With Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Sometimes, patients with a history of metal intolerance react negatively or doubtfully to nickel at patch testing. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate whether aqueous nickel sulfate hexahydrate at 15% and 30% traces more contact allergy than the nickel preparation in the baseline series at 5%. METHODS: In the period 1995-2015, more than 800 of 16,059 patients with a negative or doubtful patch test reaction to the petrolatum preparation of nickel at 5% on the day 3 reading were additionally tested with aqueous nickel at 15% and/or 30%. CONCLUSIONS: In this retrospe

Patch Testing to Propylene Glycol: The Mayo Clinic Experience.

BACKGROUND: Propylene glycol (PG) is a solvent, vehicle, and humectant being used increasingly in a wide array of personal care products, cosmetics, and topical medicaments. Propylene glycol is a recognized source of both allergic and irritant contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to report incidence of positive patch tests to PG at Mayo Clinic. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed records of all patients patch tested to PG from January 1997 to December 2016. RESULTS: A total of 11,738 patients underwent patch testing to 5%, 10%, or 20% PG. Of these, 100 (0.85%) tested pos

American Contact Dermatitis Society Core Allergen Series: 2017 Update.

The American Contact Dermatitis Society Core Allergen Series was introduced in 2012. After 4 years of use, changes in our recommended allergens are necessary. For the updated series, we have reordered the first 4 panels to approximately mirror the current TRUE Test and removed parthenolide, triclosan, glutaraldehyde, and jasmine. Polymyxin B, lavender, sodium benzoate, ethylhexylglycerin, and benzoic acid are new additions to the American Contact Dermatitis Society series.

Allergenic Ingredients in Personal Hygiene Wet Wipes.

BACKGROUND: Wet wipes are a significant allergen source for anogenital allergic contact dermatitis. RESULTS: In the 54 personal hygiene wet wipes evaluated, a total of 132 ingredients were identified (average of 11.9 ingredients per wipe). The most common ingredients were Aloe barbadensis (77.8%), citric acid (77.8%), fragrance (72.2%), sorbic

Contact Allergy to Hydroperoxides of Linalool and D-Limonene in a US Population.

BACKGROUND: Linalool and D-limonene are common fragrance ingredients that readily oxidize on exposure to air. The resulting hydroperoxides of linalool and D-limonene have been shown to have high frequencies of positive patch test reactions in several European and international studies. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of contact allergy to the hydroperoxides of linalool and D-limonene in a US population. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 103 patients with suspected fragrance allergy were patch tested to linalool 10% petrolatum (pet), hydroperoxides of lin
