Methylphenidate use in males with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and a comorbid attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common comorbidity in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Until now, treatment with methylphenidate (MPH) has never been systematically assessed and described in this population. Our aim was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of short acting MPH for learning problems in males with DMD and ADHD. Neuropsychological (cognition and behavior) and medical data of a sample of ten males (mean age = 8.1 years, range 6.3-9.8) with DMD and an ADHD diagnosis was retrospectively analyzed at baseline (T0; without MPH), short-term follow-up (T1; with

Psychological functioning in Parkinson's disease post-deep brain stimulation: Self-regulation and executive functioning.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder involving the basal ganglia, resulting in motor and extra-motor deficits. These extra-motor deficits may be reflective of a self-regulatory deficit impacting patients' ability to regulate cognitive processes, thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. There is a need to further examine the prevalence and range of self-regulation (SR) and executive functioning (EF) impairments in PD. This study sought to do so in a sample of patients with PD (N = 31) who underwent deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery for motor symptom treatment. Patients complete

Long-term cognitive follow-up of Parkinson's disease patients with impulse control disorders.

This study investigated cognitive functions in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with impulse control disorders (ICDs) and aimed to identify possible predictors of behavioral outcome. In this longitudinal cohort study, 40 PD outpatients with ICDs and 40 without, were matched for sex, age at PD onset, age and disease duration at cognitive assessment. All patients had two neuropsychological assessments at least 2 years apart (mean, 3.5 years). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify predictors of ICDs remission at follow-up. The PD patients with and without ICDs had o

Neural network activation during a stop-signal task discriminates cocaine-dependent from non-drug-abusing men.

Cocaine dependence is defined by a loss of inhibitory control over drug-use behaviors, mirrored by measurable impairments in laboratory tasks of inhibitory control. The current study tested the hypothesis that deficits in multiple subprocesses of behavioral control are associated with reliable neural-processing alterations that define cocaine addiction. While undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), 38 cocaine-dependent men and 27 healthy control men performed a stop-signal task of motor inhibition. An independent component analysis on fMRI time courses identified task-related

Is cerebellar volume related to bipolar disorder?

BACKGROUND: Recent data suggest that cerebellum influences emotion modulation in humans. The findings of cerebellar abnormalities in bipolar disorder (BD) are especially intriguing given the link between the cerebellum emotional and behavioral regulation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate cerebellar volume in patients with euthymic BD type I compared to controls. Moreover, we investigated the possible relationship between cerebellar volume and suicidal behavior. METHODS: Forty-patients with euthymic BD type I, 20 with and 20 without history of suicide attempt, and 22 healthy controls

Atypical prefrontal connectivity in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: pathway to disease or pathological end point?

Functional neuroimaging studies have identified multiple nodes of dysfunction in frontostriatal and mesocorticolimbic networks in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Yet relatively few studies have examined how structural and functional connectivity between nodes in these networks might relate to the behavioral symptoms of ADHD. Moreover, it is unknown whether abnormalities in connectivity are a primary cause of symptoms or arise secondary to common etiologic mechanisms. We review the most recent diffusion tensor imaging and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies of connect

Long term follow-up of Parkinson's disease patients with impulse control disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are mainly triggered by dopaminergic therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD). Previously, we failed to identify a relationship between the types of dopaminergic therapy and occurrence of ICDs in 33 PD patients. In this study, we aim to evaluate the outcome of ICD behaviors in the same patient group. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Among 33 patients with ICDs, 22 patients were included. Demographics, dopaminergic therapy and disease severity were compared between two time points (Time 1: time of diagnosis of ICD, Time 2: last visit) and between patients who recove

Neural substrates of impaired sensorimotor timing in adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Timing abilities are critical to the successful management of everyday activities and personal safety, and timing abnormalities have been argued to be fundamental to impulsiveness, a core symptom of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Despite substantial evidence of timing deficits in ADHD youth, only two studies have explicitly examined timing in ADHD adults and only at the suprasecond time scale. Also, the neural substrates of these deficits are largely unknown for both youth and adults with ADHD. The present study examined subsecond sensorimotor timing and its neura

[Psychosomatic concept of hyperthyroidism-Graves type--behavioral and biochemical characteristics].

INTRODUCTION: In this study we test the hypothesis that specific behavioral and biochemical vulnerabilities characterize individuals with hyperthyroidism-Graves type, one of the classically cited "psychosomatic disorders". MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample included 24 subjects with Graves disease and 34 controls. All participants were evaluated for personality and temperament characteristics and for platelet MAO activity. A smaller group of panic disorder patients was tested with the same set of measures to ensure a validity of the study, especially regarding results on personality tests. RES

Does excessive daytime sleepiness contribute to explaining the association between obesity and ADHD symptoms?

Recent studies suggest a significant association between obesity and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The factors underlying this newly described comorbidity are still unclear and unexplored. In the present article, we propose that excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) contributes to explaining the association between ADHD and obesity. The background for this hypothesis comes from studies on the association between ADHD and EDS, as well as from investigations on EDS in obese individuals. Available studies suggest that ADHD behaviours are significantly associated with EDS. Moreover

Does sustained-release lithium reduce impulsive gambling and affective instability versus placebo in pathological gamblers with bipolar spectrum disorders?

OBJECTIVE: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors may be effective for some patients with pathological gambling, but those with comorbid conditions, such as bipolar spectrum disorders, may relapse during treatment. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first placebo-controlled treatment study in pathological gamblers with bipolar spectrum disorders; it compares sustained-release lithium carbonate to placebo. METHOD: Forty pathological gambling patients with bipolar spectrum disorders entered a 10-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled treatment study of sustained-release lithium

Heritability of attention problems in children: longitudinal results from a study of twins, age 3 to 12.

BACKGROUND: Twin studies of childhood behavior problems support the conclusion that individual differences in impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention are largely due to genetic influences. Non-genetic variation is due to environmental influences that are unique to the individual, and possibly to rater contrast effects. In the present longitudinal twin study, we report on the size of genetic and environmental effects on individual differences in attention problems at ages 3, 7, 10 and 12 years. METHODS: Mothers were asked to complete the CBCL for their twin offspring when the children were

Screen for MAOA mutations in target human groups.

Brunner et al. [1993: Am J Hum Genet 52: 1032-1039; 1993: Science 262:578-580] described males with an MAO-A deficiency state resulting from a premature stop codon in the coding region of the MAOA gene. This deficiency state was associated with abnormal levels of amines and amine metabolites in urine and plasma of affected males, as well as low normal intelligence and apparent difficulty in impulse control, including inappropriate sexual behavior. In the present study, disruption of the MAOA gene was evaluated in males with mental retardation with and without a history of sexually deviant beha

Clinical and Sociodemographic Variables as Risk Factors for Suicidal Behavior in Borderline Personality Disorder: A Restrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Suicidal behavior (SB) is nuclear in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). It is considered a symptom clinically relevant and with an important prognostic value. The literature describes different variables related to SB in BPD such as impulsivity, aggressiveness or hopelessness. There are not hardly any studies focused on the role of sociodemographic variables and their specific relationship with SB in BPD. The objective of this work is to identify which clinical and sociodemographic parameters could act as markers of suicide risk in BPD. METHODS: A cross-section

Pre-psychosis in later life as a risk factor for progressive cognitive decline: Findings from the IPA psychosis in neurodegenerative disease working group.

Pre-clinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) has traditionally been characterized by subtle cognitive deficits alongside biomarker changes. However, emerging evidence suggests a spectrum of neuropsychiatric changes, including apathy, affective disturbances, agitation, impulse control deficits, and psychosis, may precede cognitive decline. Late-onset psychotic disorders, such as Very Late-Onset Schizophrenia-Like Psychosis (VLOSLP), differ from pre-psychosis, the latter presenting with subtle symptoms and retained insight. These subtler late-life onset symptoms are associated with incident cognitive d

A Case of Rafiq Syndrome (MAN1B1-CDG) in a Palestinian Child, With Brief Literature Review of 44 Cases.

Rafiq syndrome, MAN1B1-CDG, was described in 2010 and associated with genetic mutation in MAN1B1 gene in 2011. The disorder follows an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance and typically presents with specific facial dysmorphism, intellectual disability, developmental delay, obesity, and hypotonia. The syndrome belongs to a group of metabolic disorders called Congenital Glycosylation Disorders (CGD). In this study, we discuss a 5-year-old male from Palestine who presented with developmental delay, hypotonia, characteristic facial dysmorphisms, impulsive behaviors, inability to speak, cryp…
