Testing a mediational model of sexually aggressive behavior in nonincarcerated perpetrators.

This study examined a psychological model of male sexually aggressive behavior toward women. Forty-seven men who reported completing or attempting acts that legally represent rape in most states and 56 nonviolent men completed measures assessing early home environment, attitudes regarding women and relationships, impulsive behaviors, and peers' characteristics. As predicted, sexually aggressive behavior was associated with exposure to negative childhood experiences with fathers. These experiences included reports of emotionally distant, uncaring fathers and witnessing father-perpetrated domest

Clinic referral for oppositional defiant disorder: relative significance of attachment and behavioral variables.

Attachment classifications have been found to distinguish clinic-referred, oppositional preschool boys from controls, but there has been no previous effort to examine the relative contribution of attachment when behaviors from a social learning perspective are also considered. The present study examined the contribution of attachment and behavioral variables to the prediction of clinic referral for oppositional defiant disorder in a sample of preschool boys. We hypothesized that the attachment measures would offer better discrimination of clinic and control group boys at this age. This hypothe

Substance Use among Youth with Currently and Formerly Incarcerated Parents.

Parental incarceration impacts millions of children in the U.S. and has important consequences for youths' adjustment. Children of incarcerated parents are at risk for a host of negative psychosocial outcomes, including substance abuse problems. Using data from a statewide survey of youth behavior, the effect of both present and past parental incarceration on youths' report of their substance use behaviors was examined. Both present and past parental incarceration was significantly associated with use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and prescription drugs, as well as substance abuse and depend

[Gambling and pathological gambling in Hungary].

Gambling and pathological gambling are typically out of focus research area in Hungary. Besides the little evidence available in this field, it can be stated that both society and policy decision makers ignore the problems regarding this phenomenon. Gambling is rather considered to be a segment of the market than a behavior with possible harmful consequences or a mental and behavior disorder . The author reviews current knowledge on gambling and pathological gambling, including market data, research results and treatment options and highlights the most important steps which would be necessary

Roles of hypomania and intelligence in antisocial practices when self-esteem and family problems are considered.

A sample of 71 nonpsychiatric adults, including 57 men and 14 women, completed the MMPI-2 and the Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Test. Preliminary support was found for the hypothesis that those who score high both on intelligence and hypomania would express the greatest tendency for antisocial behavior, However, this association occurred only when self-esteem and family problems were not controlled. Moreover, preliminary findings suggest that the interaction between intelligence and hypomania influences self-esteem which then determines antisocial behavior.

Examination of the relationships among drug use, emotional/psychological problems, and crime among youths entering a juvenile detention center.

Urine testing and confidential interviews of youths entering a juvenile detention center in a southeastern city produced some striking results in regard to their drug use, delinquent behavior, and emotional/psychological problems. Recent users of marijuana/hashish and cocaine had higher rates of referral to juvenile court for property and drug offenses than nonusers. The results suggest that interviewing and urine testing of youthful detainees for drug use at the point of entry into secure detention is a promising method for screening youngsters with histories of delinquent behavior. Sexuality education: a more realistic view of its effects.

Sexuality education has been proffered as a partial solution to a variety of adolescent sexual problems. Research demonstrates that programs increase knowledge, but have little direct impact on values and attitudes, actual sexual behavior, use of birth control, and teen-age pregnancy. This article compares the effects of sexuality education programs with the results of other educational programs and discusses why sex education programs may increase knowledge, but may not effectively change behavior. Finally, good reasons to offer sexuality education are discussed.

The use of drugs for behavior modification as it relates to the practice of optometry--Part I.

Medications used in behavior modification can result in untoward side effects, including ocular and visual changes. As in many other aspects of health care, optometrists can serve as the first line of defense to guard their patients against permanent damage from side effects they may not associate with use of their medication. Optometry's responsibility and role in management of side effects is delineated. Areas of behavior modification of concern to optometrists are discussed. These include: (1) learning problems and mental retardation; (2) mental disorders, menopause, and alcoholism; and (3)

Secondary orgasmic dysfunction. II. Case study.

The treatment of a case of secondary orgasmic dysfunction is described. In this case, a direct behavioral retraining program was employed to increase the couple's repertoire of effective sexual behaviors. An extinction and successive approximation procedure was used to transfer ortasmic responsiveness from solitary masturbation to heterosexual coitus. Since other data have indicated that nonsexual marriage problems contribute to the maintenance of secondary orgasmic dysfunction, a direct, confrontive intervention into the marital relationship was made concurrent with the sexual retraining prog

Fear of Missing out Serially Mediated by Social Media Use and Alcohol-Related Content on Alcohol Outcomes Among College Students: A Cross-Sectional Examination.

Fear of missing out (FoMO) is the apprehension that others may be having more rewarding experiences from which one is absent. A positive relationship between FoMO and social media related behaviors is well established. Limited studies have examined how FoMO may be associated with risky health behaviors, such as alcohol use. Risky alcohol use is a pervasive public health issue among college students, a population with high rates of alcohol consumption and alcohol-related consequences. Emerging studies have identified alcohol-related content (ARC) on social media may predict greater college drin

Thiamine Deficiency in a Patient With Schizophrenia: Precautions and Countermeasures for Subclinical Thiamine Deficiency.

Patients with schizophrenia often experience problems associated with ordinary exercises of life due to their mental symptoms. Those experiencing problems related to feeding behavior, in particular, are considered to be susceptible to developing Wernicke encephalopathy due to a deficiency in thiamine, the physiological stores of which are limited; however, there are few reported cases, and most of them were accompanied by the classical triad of signs. We report our experience with asymptomatic thiamine deficiency (TD) in a schizophrenia patient. A 73-year-old female was receiving medication fo

Preventing Emotional Dysregulation: Acceptability and Preliminary Effectiveness of a DBT Skills Training Program for Adolescents in the Spanish School System.

Emotional dysregulation is a key factor in the development and maintenance of multiple disabling mental disorders through a person's lifespan. Therefore, there is an urgent need to prevent emotional dysregulation as early as possible. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of an adapted Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training program for Emotional Problem Solving in Adolescents (DBT STEPS-A) during secondary school. The sample included 93 adolescents (mean age = 12.78; SD = 0.54; and 53% female) studying in their 2nd year of secondary sc

EIF3F-related neurodevelopmental disorder: refining the phenotypic and expanding the molecular spectrum.

BACKGROUND: An identical homozygous missense variant in EIF3F, identified through a large-scale genome-wide sequencing approach, was reported as causative in nine individuals with a neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by variable intellectual disability, epilepsy, behavioral problems and sensorineural hearing-loss. To refine the phenotypic and molecular spectrum of EIF3F-related neurodevelopmental disorder, we examined independent patients. RESULTS: 21 patients were homozygous and one compound heterozygous for c.694T>G/p.(Phe232Val) in EIF3F. Haplotype analyses in 15 families suggested

Hooked on virtual social life. Problematic social media use and associations with mental distress and addictive disorders.

BACKGROUND: Social media is an important and growing part of the lives of the vast majority of the global population, especially in the young. Although still a young and scarce subject, research has revealed that social media has addictive potential. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore the associations between problematic use of social media and mental distress, problematic gaming and gambling, within the Swedish general population. METHODS: Data from 2,118 respondents was collected through self-report questions on demographics and validated scales measuring addiction-like ex

Effect of maternal rumination and disengagement during childhood on offspring neural response to reward in late adolescence.

Maternal rumination is a cognitive-affective trait that could influence offspring's ability to respond flexibly to positive and negative events, depending on the quality of maternal problem-solving behaviors with which rumination co-occurs. As reward circuitry is sensitive to stressors and related to risk for depression, reward circuitry is an appropriate candidate mechanism for how maternal characteristics influence offspring. We evaluated the independent and combined effect of maternal rumination and disengagement on adolescent neural response to reward win and loss. Participants were 122 bo

Common sleep disorders in children.

Up to 50% of children will experience a sleep problem. Early identification of sleep problems may prevent negative consequences, such as daytime sleepiness, irritability, behavioral problems, learning difficulties, motor vehicle crashes in teenagers, and poor academic performance. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs in 1% to 5% of children. Polysomnography is needed to diagnose the condition because it may not be detected through history and physical examination alone. Adenotonsillectomy is the primary treatment for most children with obstructive sleep apnea. Parasomnias are common in childhood; sl

Transition from alcohol to other drugs among adolescents in Taiwan: the first drinking context matters.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the extent to which youthful alcohol consumption and the initiation of tobacco, betel nut, and other illegal drugs may differ by their first drinking context in Taiwan-a society with social norms that are more tolerant of underage drinking. METHOD: In 2004, in a nationally representative sample of 11,943 school-attending youth ages 15-18, information pertaining to sociodemographic characteristics, problem behaviors, lifetime experiences of alcohol, tobacco, betel nut, and illegal drugs, as well as psychoactive, drug-specific age of initiation, context at first u…

Measuring ADHD behaviors in children with symptomatic accommodative dysfunction or convergence insufficiency: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Accommodative dysfunction and convergence insufficiency (CI) are common pediatric vision problems that have been associated with an increase in frequency and severity of vision-specific symptoms that affect children when doing schoolwork. However, the relationship between accommodative dysfunction and CI and other learning problems, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are not well understood. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency of ADHD behaviors in school-aged children with symptomatic accommodative dysfunction or CI. METHODS: Children 8 to

Harm reduction approaches to alcohol use: health promotion, prevention, and treatment.

Harm reduction approaches to alcohol problems have endured a controversial history in both the research literature and the popular media. Although several studies have demonstrated that controlled drinking is possible and that moderation-based treatments may be preferred over abstinence-only approaches, the public and institutional views of alcohol treatment still support zero-tolerance. After describing the problems with zero-tolerance and the benefits of moderate drinking, the research literature describing prevention and intervention approaches consistent with a harm reduction philosophy ar
