Surveillance for Sickle Cell Disease - Sickle Cell Data Collection Program, Two States, 2004-2018.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Sickle cell disease (SCD), an inherited blood disorder affecting an estimated 100,000 persons in the United States, is associated with multiple complications and reduced life expectancy. Complications of SCD can include anemia, debilitating acute and chronic pain, infection, acute chest syndrome, stroke, and progressive organ damage, including decreased cognitive function and renal failure. Early diagnosis, screenings and preventive interventions, and access to specialist health care can decrease illness and death. Population-based public health surveillance is critical to u

An evaluation of mental health integration in the neglected tropical diseases program in Zamfara, North-west Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Mental health and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are critical in healthcare systems, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Several policies are planned or designed by health stakeholders to address the mental health needs of people affected by NTDs. Still, the impact of such policies seems to be of no consequence. METHODS: The GAD-7 and PHQ-9 tools were used to determine the rate of depression and anxiety, respectively, among people affected by skin NTDs (leprosy and lymphatic filariasis [LF]) in Zamfara State, North-west Nigeria. The study also evaluated the barrier

Lived Experience of Household Overcrowding Measure (LE-HOMe): A mixed-methods feasibility study to measure household overcrowding affecting family wellbeing, informed by lived experience.

BACKGROUND: Household overcrowding is a growing problem in England. It increases the risk of health outcomes including infections, injuries and poor mental health. For councils to monitor overcrowding at household level, methods are required to identify which homes are overcrowded and how it affects residents. Measures may need to be tailored for families, where overcrowding limits children's ability to play, study and socialise. STUDY AIM: To establish the feasibility of developing a method to identify households with families at high risk of overcrowding affecting their well-being. OBJECTI

The lifetime prevalence and associated factors of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among high school adolescents in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is a major public health problem and one of the top causes of death among adolescents worldwide. The Ethiopian government works to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being in adolescents through the National Adolescent and Youth Mental Health Strategy. Despite these efforts, suicide in adolescents remains pressing in Ethiopia; however, study findings regarding suicidal ideation and suicide attempts and their associated factors in high school adolescents have been inconsistent and non-conclusive. Therefore, this review aimed to assess the pooled national prevalence and

Feasibility of in-home monitoring for people with glaucoma: the I-TRAC mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a chronic disease of the optic nerve and a leading cause of severe visual loss in the UK. Once patients have been diagnosed, they need regular monitoring at hospital eye services. Recent advances in technology mean patients with glaucoma can now monitor their disease at home. This could be more convenient for patients and potentially reduce costs and increase capacity for the NHS. However, it is uncertain whether self-monitoring would be acceptable or possible for patients with glaucoma. OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to: identify which patients are most appropriate f

Socioeconomic and ethnic disparities associated with access to cochlear implantation for severe-to-profound hearing loss: A multicentre observational study of UK adults.

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe-to-profound hearing loss may benefit from management with cochlear implants. These patients need a referral to a cochlear implant team for further assessment and possible surgery. The referral pathway may result in varied access to hearing healthcare. This study aimed to explore referral patterns and whether there were any socioeconomic or ethnic associations with the likelihood of referral. The primary outcome was to determine factors influencing referral for implant assessment. The secondary outcome was to identify factors impacting whether healthcare profess

Interventions to safely and effectively reduce (taper) use of opioids in chronic non-cancer pain: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Opioids are prescribed for the management of chronic non-cancer pain, but they have important limitations and evidence does not support long-term use. People taking opioids therefore need support to reduce or stop use. OBJECTIVES: The research aimed to inform better practice, pathways and service design to support people to reduce or stop their use of opioids and address inequalities. Our objectives were to evaluate evidence on: effectiveness, safety (including adverse effects, adverse event) and acceptability of interventions to reduce opioid use barriers and facilitators to effe

German Non-Stuttering Primary School Children's Knowledge and Attitudes Towards Stuttering: International Comparison and Influencing Factors.

BACKGROUND: Stuttering, as a visible and audible deviation from the norm, often provokes negative reactions and leads to social stigmatisation. Studies have shown that there is a negative stuttering stereotype, the origins of which can be traced back to early life. As environmental reactions have a significant impact on the success of therapeutic interventions, understanding public knowledge and attitudes towards stuttering is essential to mitigate these prejudices at an early stage. AIMS: The present study collects the first specific data on the knowledge of German non-stuttering primary sch
