Identification, seasonal prevalence, and preferred attachment sites of ixodid tick species infesting cattle in four municipalities of the province of Tiaret, northwest Algeria.

Ixodid ticks are important disease vectors that significantly impact animal health and cause considerable economic losses, particularly in t … cum, and R. bursa (p < 0.001). Tick distribution was highest in zone 5 (95.43%), which includes the sternum, abdomen, udder, scrotum, and inner sides of the hind legs, while the lowest occurrence was in zone 1 (0.06%), which includes the head and ears. H. excavatum and H. lusitanicum showed a significant preference for Zone 5 (p < 0.001). The findings fro …

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation by Intercostal Access: Initial Experience with a No-Touch Technique.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is now a well-established therapeutic option in an elderly high-risk patient cohort with aortic valve disease. Although most commonly performed via a transfemoral route, alternative approaches for TAVI are constantly being improved. Instead of the classical mini-sternotomy, it is possible to achieve a transaortic access via a right anterior mini-thoracotomy in the second intercostal space. We describe our experience with this sternum- and rib-sparing technique in comparison to the classical transaortic approach. METHODS: Our retrospec…

Transcutaneous bilirubinometry versus total serum bilirubin measurement for newborns.

BACKGROUND: Jaundice is a very common condition in newborns, affecting up to 60% of term newborns and 80% of preterm newborns in the first w … off values for a positive result. In most studies, the TcB measurement was taken from the forehead, sternum, or both. The sensitivity of various TcB cutoff values to detect significant hyperbilirubinaemia ranged from 74% to 100%, and specificity ranged from 18% to 89%. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: The high sensitivity of TcB to detect hyperbilirubinaemia sugges …

Description of a new clinical syndrome: thoracic constriction without evidence of the typical funnel-shaped depression-the "invisible" pectus excavatum.

Pectus excavatum (PE) is a congenital malformation with a funnel-shaped depression of the sternum that can lead to cardiac symptoms. However, there are patients with thoracic constriction (defined as elevated Haller-Index > 3.25 determined by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR)) without visible evidence of PE, leading to similar complaints. Between January 2004 till June 2020, patients who underwent CMR for further evaluation of the heart, due to cardiac symptoms were enrolled and compared to controls. Biventricular global strain analysis was assessed using feature tracking (CMR-FT). ECG …

Preoperative enteral feeding (odds ratio = 0.68; 0.52-0.9) and open sternum (odds ratio = 0.76; 0.61-0.96) were associated with less cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury; cardiopulmonary bypass was associated with increased cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (odds ratio = 1.53; 1.01-2.32). Thoracic cage volume and dimension assessment by optoelectronic molding in normal children and adolescents during growth.

PURPOSE: The thoracic spine, the chondral and osseous ribs, and the sternum together make up the thoracic cage. These elements are strictly correlated, although their growth is not synchronous. The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive data set of thoracic dimensions and non-invasive volumetric assessment in a large cohort of males and females from early childhood to young adult age. METHODS: In all, 622 healthy individuals (406 girls, 216 boys) aged 6-18 years were consecutively enrolled between 2006 and 2016. All had to be healthy with no history of spinal deformity, or any lu…

Chest wall resection also extended to the sternum in one patient, the transverse process in one, the costotransverse foramen and hemivertebrae in two. All patients had a complete resection. Surgical Site Infection in Pediatric Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery with Delayed Sternal Closure: Experience from a Center in Chile (2015-2020).

Delayed sternal closure (DSC) is a technique used in complex cardiac surgery (CCS) and is associated with an increased risk of surgical site infection (SSI). SSI increases hospital stay and healthcare costs, with an incidence ranging from 1.5% to 34%. To determine the SSI rate and associated risk factors in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) undergoing CCS with DSC between January 2015 and December 2020, and to compare them with previous results, before the implementation of measures by the Healthcare-Associated Infections Committee (HAIC). Deep sternal wound infection - latissimus dorsi flap is a reliable option for reconstruction of the thoracic wall.

BACKGROUND: At present, data describing patients' long-term outcomes, quality of life, and survival after deep sternal wound infection are rarely available. The purpose of our study was to evaluate functional outcome and patient well-being after debridement and reconstruction of the sternal defect using a pedicled latissimus dorsi flap following deep sternal wound infection (DSWI). METHODS: This retrospective analysis reviewed 106 cases of DSWI after open-heart surgery treated between May 1, 2012, and May 31, 2015. The parameters of interest were demographic and medical data, including comorb

[Rib fixation for flail chest after resuscitation].

BACKGROUND: Rib fractures are a common complication caused by chest compressions during resuscitation. Flail chest may occur as a consequence, leading to respiratory failure. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present two cases in which surgical rib fixation was performed to treat flail chest after resuscitation. CONCLUSION: Based on a literature search, surgical rib fixation may be considered for flail chest after resuscitation in carefully selected patients.

Prospective, randomized, single blinded pilot study of a new FlatWire based sternal closure system.

BACKGROUND: Unstable steel wire cerclage following open heart surgery may result in increased pain, sternal cut-through, non-union, or dehiscence. These complications lead to longer hospital stays, increased cost, higher morbidity, and patient dissatisfaction. The Figure 8 FlatWire Sternal Closure System is a new construct which is a simple, intuitive, and inexpensive alternative for primary sternal repair following open heart surgery. Prior bench-top testing of FlatWire has demonstrated superior strength and stiffness compared to traditional steel wire. We present our initial experience in a
