Background and Objectives: Cancer patients are particularly susceptible to infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (MDR GNB) due to chemotherapy- or radiation therapy-induced immunosuppression. Colistin is often prescribed as a last-resort agent for MDR GNB infection, but its clinical benefit in oncology patients remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the mortality risk associated with colistin versus non-colistin regimens in cancer patient with MDR GNB infections, stratified by resistance profiles, infection sites, and concomitant medication use. Elizabethkingia meningoseptica is an uncommon nosocomial pathogen that causes meningitis, pneumonia, and sepsis in neonates and in immunocompromised individuals. It exhibits resistance to many commonly employed first-line antibiotics used to treat gram-negative pathogens. Herein, we present three cases of late-onset sepsis with multi-drug resistant (MDR) Elizabethkingia meningoseptica in high-risk neonates. Case 1 was a one-day-old preterm low-birth-weight infant who presented with respiratory distress syndrome and septic shock. The patient was intubated and administered empirical broad-spectr

The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens poses a critical global health challenge, necessitating innovative therapeutic strategies. This study explores host-targeted therapies by focusing on deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs), key regulators of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) that mediate host-pathogen interactions. Using Salmonella-infected macrophages, we screened a UPS-targeted compound library and identified several compounds that enhanced bacterial clearance without affecting host cell viability. Among these, the dual USP25/USP28 inhibitor AZ-1 emerged as one of the top can

BACKGROUND: Respiratory infections have long been recognized as a primary cause of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AE-COPD). Additionally, the emergence of antimicrobial resistance has led to an urgent and critical situation in developing countries, including Vietnam. This study aimed to investigate the distribution and antimicrobial resistance of bacteria in patients with AE-COPD using both conventional culture and multiplex real-time PCR. Additionally, associations between clinical characteristics and indicators of pneumonia in these patients were examined.

BACKGROUND: Colistin, a last-resort antibiotic for treating multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections, has increased resistance as a result of the emergence of the mcr-1 gene. The mcr-1gene, which confers colistin resistance, is often carried on plasmids, facilitating its spread by horizontal gene transfer among bacterial populations. The rising prevalence of mcr-1-mediated resistance poses significant challenges for infection control and treatment efficacy. This study aimed to detect and investigate the prevalence of the mcr-1 gene among Gram-negative bacilli isolated from clinic

There is existing controversy regarding the efficacy of tigecycline (TG) in treating complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs) because of its pharmacokinetic concerns. We present three patients with cUTIs caused by carbapenem-resistant gram-negative (GN) pathogens successfully treated with high-dose tigecycline (HDT)-based regimens, as cefiderocol and aztreonam were not available in our country. The first case describes a 67-year-old patient with diabetes, prostate cancer, and double J ureteral stenting who was hospitalized with a febrile, complicated urinary tract infection (cUTI). Urine a

Treponema pallidum subspp. pallidum is a spirochaete bacterium that causes syphilis, one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. Syphilis progresses through four distinct stages, each characterized by specific symptoms, namely primary, secondary, latent, and late (tertiary) syphilis. Serology has been considered the primary diagnostic approach. However, it is plagued by problems such as the limited specificity of nontreponemal tests and the inadequate correlation of treponemal tests with disease activity. In this study, we focused on the development of a loop-mediated isothermal ampl

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a public health challenge. It causes unresponsiveness to treatment with antimicrobials, leads to sepsis, septic shock, and increased hospital mortality. This is compounded by new multidrug resistant organisms. We present and discuss a case of sepsis caused by a rare multi-drug resistant bacterium Raoultella ornithinolytica.
ABSTRACT: Antimicrobial resistance is a major public health concern worldwide, associated with nearly 5 million deaths. The highest mortality attributed to AMR is seen in sub-Saharan Africa. Escherichia coli, Staphylo
