BACKGROUND: Cocaine is a risk factor for acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease with progression to end-stage renal disease. Levamisole is an adulterant that is added to cocaine to enhance its euphoric effects. Levamisole-adulterated cocaine (LAC) is associated with the distinct clinical syndromes of agranulocytosis, leukocytoclastic vasculitis, cocaine-induced midline destructive lesions (CIMDL), and ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) with pauci-immune necrotizing glomerulonephritis.
METHODS: We reviewed all cases of AAV secondary to LAC at our institution.

Cocaine is a well known trigger of acute coronary syndromes. Over the last 10 years levamisole, a veterinary anthelminthic drug has been increasingly used as an adulterant of cocaine. In order to improve the knowledge about the presence of Salmonella in pork meat in Sardinia (Italy), the prevalence and the sources of Salmonella at 5 pig slaughterhouses (slaughtered pigs and environment) were investigated and the isolates were characterised. We report the outcome in 2 eyes of 2 patients with retained silicone oil droplets in the anterior chamber drainage angle after the use of an ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD) during cataract surgery. Silicone oil droplets were observed when the OVD was injected into the anterior chamber during phacoemulsification. The potential chemical contamination incidents investigated by the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) between 1990 and 2002 are reviewed. Recurrent blockage of the urinary catheter is a common problem in around 40-50% of long-term catheterized patients, leading to problems which are distressing to patients and costly to health services in both time and resources. PCR techniques were applied for the detection of mycoplasma DNA and pestivirus RNA to 43 lots of live viral vaccines (measles, mumps, rubella, and oral poliomyelitis) produced by six manufacturers in Japan. Although mycoplasma DNA was not detected in any of the vaccines tested, pestivirus RNA was detected in 12 lots (28%). The incidence of contamination among the four viral vaccines was in the range of 20 to 37%, and the incidence among the six manufacturers varied from 0 to 56%.
