Associations between bone mineral density and abdominal aortic calcification: Results of a nationwide survey.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Vascular calcification has been linked to bone mineral density (BMD). This study aimed to investigate the association between BMD and abdominal aortic calcification (AAC). METHODS AND RESULTS: Data from the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were utilized. Participants lacking BMD and AAC score data were excluded. BMD at the femoral neck was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. AAC scores were assessed using the Kauppila scoring system, with AAC defined as a score greater than zero, and severe AAC defined as a score greater tha

Genetically determined type 1 diabetes mellitus and risk of osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: Observational evidence suggests that type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is associated with the risk of osteoporosis (OP). Nevertheless, it is not apparent whether these correlations indicate a causal relationship. To elucidate the causal relationship, a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed. METHODS: T1DM data was obtained from the large genome-wide association study (GWAS), in which 6683 cases and 12,173 controls from 12 European cohorts were involved. Bone mineral density (BMD) samples at four sites were extracted from the GEnetic Factors for OSteoporosis (

Measures of Physical Performance and Muscle Strength as Predictors of Fracture Risk Independent of FRAX, Falls, and aBMD: A Meta-Analysis of the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study.

Measures of muscle mass, strength, and function predict risk of incident fractures, but it is not known whether this risk information is additive to that from FRAX (fracture risk assessment tool) probability. In the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study cohorts (Sweden, Hong Kong, United States), we investigated whether measures of physical performance/appendicular lean mass (ALM) by DXA predicted incident fractures in older men, independently of FRAX probability. Baseline information included falls history, clinical risk factors for falls and fractures, femoral neck aBMD, and calculated

Independent association of bone mineral density and trabecular bone score to vertebral fracture in male subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

UNLABELLED: Osteoporosis is a major comorbidity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but the mechanism of bone fragility is unknown. We demonstrated that trabecular bone score, a parameter of bone quality, was associated with systemic inflammation and was a significant determinant of vertebral fracture independent of bone mineral density. INTRODUCTION: COPD is a major cause of secondary osteoporosis. However, the mechanism of bone fragility is unclear. We previously reported that vertebral fracture was highly prevalent in male COPD patients. To obtain clues to the mechanism of COP

Prediction of Vertebral Fractures in Patients With Monolateral Adrenal Incidentalomas.

CONTEXT: Subtle hypercortisolism is associated with an increased risk of vertebral fracture (VFx). OBJECTIVE: The objective was to determine the best parameters of cortisol secretion for detecting the VFx risk in patients with adrenal incidentalomas (AI). DESIGN: This was a retrospective (cross-sectional arm) and prospective (longitudinal arm) design. In the cross-sectional arm, we assessed the accuracy of the cortisol secretion indexes in identifying the patients with VFx (prevalent VFx). In the longitudinal arm, we tested the cortisol secretion parameters, which were able to identify the p

Using a modified Pauwels method to predict the outcome of femoral neck fracture in relatively young patients.

BACKGROUND: Pauwels classification has long been used in femoral neck fracture to measure the inclination of the fracture line and is still widely used. In recent years, however, some studies have contested the reliability of this measurement method. This study investigates modified measurement method to assess the inclination angle with assisted parameters to evaluate the correlation between the different angles and the incidences of loss of reduction, nonunion and avascular necrosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted to analyse the clinical data of 209 relatively you

Evaluation of radiological methods of assessing cup anteversion in total hip replacement.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. BACK GROUND: In total hip replacement, the placement of the cup is critical as inaccurate placement can cause impingement, accelerated wear and dislocations. The position of the cup is assessed by abduction and anteversion. There are many radiological methods available for this purpose, while the reliability and validity of the methods have not been adequately done. Calculation by CT method is a gold standard. The aim of study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of all the methods. METHODS: In 30 hips of 25 consecutive patients, 13 females a

Ipsilateral fractures of the femoral neck and shaft.

Ipsilateral femoral shaft and neck fractures are difficult to treat. From 1989 to 1998, we treated 18 patients with these complex fractures. There were 14 male and 4 female with an average age of 40 years. Most resulted from high-energy trauma. The average follow-up period is 41 months. All but one of the fractures united well. The mean time to union is 5.2+/-2.3 months in the diaphysis and 4.16+/-2 months in the neck. No cases of the femoral neck fracture or osteonecrosis of the femoral head were observed during the follow-up period. Fourteen cases were treated with a standard protocol of pla

Bone mineral density in patients receiving suppressive doses of thyroxine for thyroid carcinoma.

AIMS: Studies of the effect of thyroxine therapy on skeletal integrity have given conflicting results; the reductions in bone mass reported by some have prompted recommendations that the prescribed replacement doses of thyroxine should be reduced. We have examined bone mineral density in a group of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma receiving high doses of thyroxine to suppress thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). METHODS: The 44 patients (6 male, 38 female) had a median age of 49 years (range 27-75) with median duration of thyroxine therapy of 9.0 years (range 3 to 42) and mean dos

Lumbar bone mineral density as the major factor determining increased prevalence of vertebral fractures in monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance.

The possible relationships between biochemical measurements and both densitometric and radiographic indexes of skeletal fragility were evaluated in 65 postmenopausal women with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). There was a significantly higher prevalence of vertebral fractures in the MGUS group compared with a control population (P < or = 0.001). The MGUS patients were then grouped according to the presence or absence of at least one mild vertebral fracture. Patients with fractures (Fx, n=34) were older (62.8 +/- 6.1 years), with long-standing disease (8.8 +/- 7.1 year
