The comparison of the effects of dexmedetomidine and midazolam sedation on electroencephalography in pediatric patients with febrile convulsion.

BACKGROUND: When electroencephalogram (EEG) activity is recorded for diagnostic purposes, the effects of sedative drugs on EEG activity should be minimal. This study compares the sedative efficacy and EEG effects of dexmedetomidine and midazolam. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: EEG recordings of 60 pediatric subjects with a history of simple febrile convulsions were performed during physiologic sleep. All of these patients required sedation to obtain follow-up (control) EEGs. Subjects in Group D received 0.5 μg·kg(-1) of dexmedetomidine, and those in Group M received 0.1 mg·kg(-1) of midazolam. A comparison of 1- and 3-minute lockout periods during patient-controlled sedation with midazolam.

PURPOSE: The maximum effect of midazolam injected intravenously occurs in about 3 minutes. Patient-controlled sedation carried out with 1-mg increments of midazolam at 3-minute intervals provides comparable conditions to that of doctor-controlled sedation carried out with 1-mg increments at 1-minute intervals, except for the longer duration taken for the patients to achieve satisfactory sedation prior to surgery. The purpose of this study was to find out how safe it would be to shorten the interval of increments of midazolam to 1 minute in patient-controlled sedation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In

Novel technique for correcting urovagina via urethral transposition in the horse.

BACKGROUND: Vesicovaginal reflux is a common cause of infertility in mares. Surgical correction is commonly recommended and involves caudal relocation of the urethral orifice which forces the urine to be expelled caudally. There have been several previously described techniques. Complications associated with caudal urethral extension occur in 11-33.3% of cases. OBJECTIVE: To identify a novel technique for performing caudal urethral translocation that effectively corrects vesicovaginal reflux with minimal associated complications. STUDY DESIGN: In vivo experiment and clinical case series. ME

Propofol Versus Remimazolam in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy: A Comprehensive Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Propofol is the most commonly used intravenous anesthetic for endoscopic surgery, although it comes with various adverse effects. Research indicates that Remimazolam, which is considered a safe general anesthetic, is being increasingly adopted as an alternative to propofol in clinical settings. Our meta-analysis sought to evaluate whether the rate of adverse reactions associated with Remimazolam in gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures is acceptable, and whether its surgical success rate is at least comparable to that of propofol. METHODS: Following the PRISMA (Preferred Reportin

[Assessment of lumbar puncture skills in students, interns and residents attending hospital internship].

Although lumbar puncture is recognized as a great contributor to the diagnosis of some neurological diseases, the modalities of learning this procedure are still poorly defined in training programs for students attending their hospital internships. Apprehension related to the lack of experience and the fear of failure accelerates the abandonment of the practice. This study aims to assess lumbar puncture skills in the students at the Faculty of Medicine in Nouakchott as well as their subjective experience of this procedure. We conducted a survey of TCEM and DCEM 4 interns, residents and student

A Comparison of the Effects of Epidural Levobupivacaine and Morphine for Postoperative Analgesia Following Major Abdominal Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Objectives Epidural analgesia remains the cornerstone of pain management following laparotomy. Local anesthetics used in epidural analgesia provide good analgesia but may result in hypotension and/or motor blockade. Morphine, a long-acting opioid, can also be used epidurally to provide analgesia. Morphine used epidurally will cause fewer hemodynamic disturbances and no motor blockade. Hence, we compared the efficacy, hemodynamic parameters, and motor blockade between epidural levobupivacaine and morphine for postoperative analgesia following laparotomy. Materials and methods This is a prospect
