Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2Z (CMT2Z) is an inherited axonal neuropathy caused by haploinsufficiency of microrchidia CW-type zinc finger protein 2 (MORC2), which leads to elevated hydroxyl radical levels, reduced ATPase activity, and apoptosis-mediated neuromuscular degeneration. CMT2Z presents with severe clinical manifestations, yet no widely applicable and affordable treatment has been developed. While gene therapy presents a theoretical solution, its feasibility remains constrained by prohibitive costs and delivery challenges. We observed sex-specific differences in muscle function i

PURPOSE: Eccentric quasi-isometric (EQI) contractions have been proposed as a novel training method for safely exposing the musculotendinous system to a large mechanical load/impulse, with few repetitions. However, understanding of this contraction type is rudimentary. We aimed to compare the acute effects of a single session of isotonic EQIs with isokinetic eccentric (ECC) contractions.
METHODS: Fifteen well-trained men performed a session of impulse-equated EQI and ECC knee extensions, with each limb randomly allocated to one contraction type. Immediately PRE, POST, 24/48/72 h, and 7 days p

Hamstring muscle injuries occur during high-speed activities, which suggests that muscular strength at high velocities may be more important than maximal strength. This study examined hamstring adaptations to training for maximal strength and for strength at high velocities. Physically active men (n = 25; age, 23.0 ± 3.2 years) were randomly divided into: (1) a resistance training (RT, n = 8) group, which performed high-load, low-velocity concentric-eccentric hamstring contractions; (2) a resistance training concentric (RTC; n = 9) group, which performed high-load, low-velocity concentric-only

BACKGROUND: Management of a displaced comminuted patellar fractures is challenging, and various surgical fixation methods have been suggested. However, issues of loss of reduction and breakage of fixatives have not yet been resolved. In the current study, we describe a new technique for exposure and stabilization of comminuted patellar fractures and evaluate the clinical and radiologic outcomes of this new treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen patellar fractures with articular comminution, which were treated by headless compression screws with additional separate vertical wiring were enr

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral pain is a debilitating injury for many recreational runners. Excessive patellofemoral joint stress may be the underlying source of pain and interventions often focus on ways to reduce patellofemoral joint stress.
PURPOSE: Heel lifts have been used as an intervention within Achilles tendon rehabilitation programs and to address leg length discrepancies. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of running with heel lifts on patellofemoral joint stress, patellofemoral stress impulse, quadriceps force, step length, cadence, and other related kinematic and spa

INTRODUCTION: Continuous femoral nerve blocks for total knee arthroplasty can cause motor weakness of the quadriceps muscle and thus prevent early mobilisation. Perioperative falls may result as an iatrogenic complication. In this randomised and blinded trial, we tested the hypothesis that a continuous adductor canal block is superior to continuous femoral nerve block regarding mobilisation ('timed up-and-go' test and other tests) after total knee arthroplasty under general anaesthesia.
METHODS: In our study, we included patients scheduled for unilateral knee arthroplasty under general anaest…

PURPOSE: Anterior knee pain related to the donor site is a frequent complication of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) with bone-patellar tendon-bone autograft tissue. Even when hamstring tendon (HT) grafts are used instead, symptoms such as mild pain and discomfort can still occur. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the pathophysiology of anterior knee symptoms after ACLR with HT autografts.
METHODS: Fifty-seven patients (22 men and 35 women; mean age, 24.7 years) who underwent anatomic double-bundle ACLR with HT autografts were examined 6 months post-operatively. The p

Transient patellar dislocation is a rare finding. It is usually due to direct trauma in mediolateral direction or to indirect trauma related to violent quadriceps muscle contraction. The clinical diagnosis of transient forms is usually rather difficult because the associated signs (hemarthros and pain at the joint and/or at the vastus medialis insertion) are not specific. Conventional radiography and CT are very accurate in bone studies, but exhibit major limitations in the detection of capsular injuries with intramedullary and/or cartilaginous bone involvement. We investigated MR diagnostic r…
