Beyond income: financial hardship as a pathway from socioeconomic disadvantage to depression among middle and older cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Depression disproportionately affects older cancer survivors with fewer socioeconomic resources, yet the mechanisms underlying this disparity remain under-explored. Guided by Fundamental Cause Theory, this study examined whether financial hardship mediates the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) indicators, education, income, and wealth, and depressive symptoms among older cancer survivors in the United States. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Health and Retirement Study (2012-2018). The analytic sample comprised 1,520 cancer survivors aged 50 and older. A seven-item …

Association of cumulative obesity- and insulin resistance-related indices with incident cardiovascular disease in Chinese middle-aged and elderly populations: a nationwide prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and insulin resistance (IR) are major contributors to cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, most studies have focused on single indices, and longitudinal evidence on multiple cumulative indices remains limited. This study aimed to systematically assess the associations between 18 cumulative obesity- and IR-related indices (OIRIs) and incident CVD in Chinese middle-aged and elderly adults, identifying the most predictive markers. METHODS: A total of 2,124 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were included. Cumulative OIRIs were calcu…

Correlation between the modified cardiometabolic index and the incidence of cardiovascular disease in a population with cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome stages 0-3: a nationwide prospective cohort study.

The global burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is substantial, particularly among individuals with cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the modified cardiometabolic index (MCMI), which integrates fasting plasma glucose (FPG) with traditional lipid and adiposity measures, and the risk of developing new-onset CVD in individuals with stage 0-3 CKM syndrome. This prospective cohort study used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). A total of 5,786 participants at baseline (2011-2012), aged ≥ 45 years…

Associations of the combined C-reactive protein-triglyceride glucose index and frailty index in different dimensions with incident stroke among individuals with stages 0-3 cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome.

K-means clustering was used to categorize participants into an appropriate number of clusters. Insulin resistance surrogate indices and incident cardiovascular disease across cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic stages 0-3: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The American Heart Association (AHA) recently proposed the concept of Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) syndrome, highlighti … ctive performance using machine learning approaches. METHODS: Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), this prospective cohort study included 5,528 participants. Twelve IR surrogate indices were assessed, including TyG-related indices, TG/HDL-C, METS-IR, CTI, CHG, and eGDR. Incident CVD was defined as self-reported physic …

Association of nighttime sleep duration and quality with low back pain in middle-aged and elderly Chinese: a nationwide longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There are few studies on the association between nighttime sleep duration and sleep quality with low back pain (LBP) in the Chinese population. This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal associations between middle-aged and older adults in China. METHODS: This study is a large-sample longitudinal cohort study and the data used in this study were from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) survey. Nighttime sleep duration was obtained from the self-reported of the participants and was divided into five groups of < 6 h, 6 to < 7 h, 7 to < 8 h, 8 to < 9 h, a…

Bidirectional association between edentulism and sarcopenia in Chinese middle-aged and older adults: a nationally representative longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Edentulism and sarcopenia are two prevalent ageing-related conditions, yet longitudinal evidence clarifying their bidirectional relationship remains limited. We investigated the reciprocal associations between edentulism and sarcopenia among Chinese middle-aged and older adults, and further examined potential age-dependent effects. METHODS: We used data from the nationally representative China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Two longitudinal analytic cohorts were constructed: Cohort 1 included participants without sarcopenia at baseline (2011; n = 6,746) to eval…

Sustained moderate to high triglyceride-glucose index level is associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia in middle-aged and elderly adults: a nationally representative cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, a novel surrogate marker for insulin resistance (IR), has shown emerging links to sarcopenia. Yet the comprehensive association between the TyG Index and sarcopenia risk remains inconsistent, especially regarding the role of longitudinal TyG exposure patterns. This study comprehensively examines the relationships of baseline TyG index, cumulative TyG index, and TyG index subgroups (defined by two time-point measurements) with incident sarcopenia in Chinese middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: We analyzed data from two China Health and Retirement…

Motoric Cognitive Risk Syndrome Associated With Risk of Frailty and Likelihood of Reversion in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR), a predementia condition, is reported to be associated with frailty. However, the associations of MCR with frailty risk and its reversibility remain unclear. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted of 10 809 older adults from the Health and Retirement Study in the United States. Frailty was assessed by the frailty index and reversibility was measured by transitions from frailty at baseline to non-frailty during follow-up. MCR was defined as the presence of both subjective cognitive complaints and slow gait speed in individuals without deme…

Creatinine and cystatin C-based indices for predicting sarcopenia, frailty and disability in older community-dwelling adults.

BACKGROUND: The serum creatinine/cystatin C ratio (CCR) and sarcopenia index (SI) are emerging diagnostic markers for sarcopenia, but their values among community-dwelling older adults remain uncertain. This study evaluates the utility of SI and CCR in diagnosing sarcopenia and predicting incident frailty and disability in activities of daily living (ADL) within a substantial cohort of older Chinese adults.
