Refeeding syndrome is an uncommon but potentially fatal phenomenon that can occur in patients receiving parenteral, enteral, or oral feedings after a period of sustained malnutrition or starvation. This syndrome is characterized by hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and hypomagnesemia. The purpose of this article was to bring an acute awareness of refeeding syndrome to the critical care nurse. The recognition, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, potential life threatening complications, and treatment are presented.

Background: Pediatric obesity exemplifies the paradox of energy excess coexisting with nutritional inadequacy. Despite high caloric intake, children with obesity often display deficiencies in essential macro- and micronutrients that impair growth, metabolic regulation, and long-term health. This review critically examines the mechanisms underlying malnutrition in pediatric obesity, emphasizing the interplay between dietary quality, inflammation, microbiota alterations, and biomarker profiles, and identifies research gaps limiting precision nutrition approaches. Methods: A comprehensive narrati

The global pandemic from COVID-19 infection has generated significant public health concerns, both health-wise and economically. There is no specific pharmacological antiviral therapeutic option to date available for COVID-19 management. Also, there is an urgent need to discover effective medicines, prevention, and control methods because of the harsh death toll from this novel coronavirus infection. Acute respiratory tract infections, significantly lower respiratory tract infections, and pneumonia are the primary cause of millions of deaths worldwide. The role of micronutrients, including tra

STUDY DESIGN: Case study.
OBJECTIVES: Subacute myelo-optico-neuropathy (SMON) is a severe neuro-degenerative disorder caused by poisoning due to over-dose and prolonged oral administration of clioquinol; this disorder was more frequent during 1957-1970. It is characterized by axonal degeneration and gliosis in the cervical gracile fasciculus. Recently, copper-deficient myelo-neuropathies presenting similar symptoms (that is, painful dysesthesia/paresthesia in the lower limbs, ataxia, spastic paraplegia, autonomic disorders and visual impairment) were reported. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Bronchiolitis, primarily caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), is a common respiratory infection in infants and a known precursor to recurrent wheezing and asthma. This review explores the role of oxidative stress and trace element deficiencies in the pathogenesis of bronchiolitis and its long-term sequelae. Infants with reduced lung function due to prematurity or congenital airway anomalies exhibit heightened susceptibility to RSV infection. Growing evidence implicates oxidative stress and deficiencies in zinc, selenium, and magnesium as significant contributors to disease progression.

PURPOSE: Literature has demonstrated an inverse relation between magnesium (Mg) consumption and development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension (HT), and dyslipidemia. After bariatric surgery (BS), micronutrients deficiencies are common, it being important to ensure appropriate supplementation. There is no recommendation about Mg supplementation and to our knowledge, its effect has not been studied to date. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of Mg supplementation in cardio-metabolic risk factors on post-bariatric patients.

Globally, more than 250 million people are affected by depression (major depressive disorder; MDD), a serious and debilitating mental disorder. Currently available treatment options can have substantial side effects and take weeks to be fully effective. Therefore, it is important to find safe alternatives, which act more rapidly and in a larger number of patients. While much research on MDD focuses on chronic stress as a main risk factor, we here make a point of exploring dietary factors as a somewhat overlooked, yet highly promising approach towards novel antidepressant pathways. Deficiencies

OBJECTIVE: Magnesium (Mg) has previously been found to modulate blood lipid levels, atherogenesis and atherosclerosis in rabbits when used as a dietary supplement. In addition, we have reported that Mg fortification of drinking water can attenuate atherogenesis in male low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-receptor-deficient mice, but had a mild and nonsignificant effect on female mice fed a high-cholesterol diet supplemented with cholic acid. The aim of this study was to examine whether Mg has an antiatherogenic effect in female mice fed a high-cholesterol diet without cholic acid.

Dietary deficiency of trace elements, minerals and vitamins has been associated with severe malnutrition among young children. Although levels of severe malnutrition among children are high in developing countries, data on dietary intake of trace elements, minerals, vitamins and other nutrients by severely malnourished (SMN) children are limited. The present prospective study was conducted for a period of 12 months in order to assess the intake of trace elements, minerals, vitamins and other nutrients by SMN children and its possible interrelationship with their nutritional status. The nutriti

OBJECTIVE: .Sclerodactyly with acroosteolysis (AO) and calcinosis are prominent features of systemic sclerosis (SSc), but the pathogenesis of these findings is poorly understood. Vitamin D and parathyroid hormone (PTH) have a crucial role in bone metabolism and resorption and may affect AO and calcinosis. We assessed vitamin D and PTH in patients with SSc.
METHODS: Medical records of 134 consecutive patients with SSc (American College of Rheumatology criteria) followed at the rheumatology department during the years 2003-2006 were reviewed for clinical assessment, laboratory evaluation [inclu

Although nitric oxide of endothelial origin plays a major role in warding off inappropriate thrombus formation, platelets also express the "constitutive" isoform of nitric oxide synthase (cNOS). Activation of this enzyme by calcium influx during platelet aggregation provides an important feedback signal that dampens platelet recruitment. Platelets also express a membrane-bound NAD(P)H oxidase complex, activated by collagen receptors, that produces superoxide. Superoxide can directly quench NO; moreover, by giving rise to peroxynitrite, it can oxidize the cNOS cofactor tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4)

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive estimates of usual nutrient intake, supplement use, and nutrition-related biomarkers are lacking among children and adolescents.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this secondary analysis of the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was to evaluate usual nutrient intake and nutrition-related biomarkers among individuals aged 1-18 y.
METHODS: Individuals aged 1-18 y with ≥1 reliable dietary recall who participated in NHANES 2001-March 2020 were included for analysis. Pregnant females were excluded. Dietary intake was collected using 24-h die

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between magnesium (Mg) status, serum vitamin D (VD) concentration and mortality in congestive heart failure (CHF) patients. Data for this study were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 2007-2018. Magnesium depletion score (MDS) is a scoring system developed to predict the status of Mg deficiency that considers the pathophysiological factors influencing the reabsorption capability of the kidneys. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality of CHF patients and the secondary outcome was mortality due to cardiovascular

BACKGROUND: The primary hyperoxalurias are autosomal recessive disorders resulting from deficiency of hepatic alanine:glyoxylate aminotransferase (PHI) or D-glycerate dehydrogenase/glyoxylate reductase (PHII). Marked hyperoxaluria results in urolithiasis, renal failure, and systemic oxalosis. A direct comparison of PHI and PHII has not previously been available.
METHODS: Twelve patients with PHI and eight patients with PHII with an initial creatinine clearance of greater than or equal to 50 mL/min/1.73 m2 underwent similar laboratory evaluation, clinical management, and follow-up. Diagnosis o
