PURPOSE: Prediction of success after anterior sphincter repair for incontinence is difficult. Standard multivariate analysis techniques have only 75 to 80 percent accuracy. Artificial intelligence, including artificial neural networks, has been used in the analysis of complex clinical data and has proved to be successful in predicting the outcome of other surgical procedures. Using a neural network algorithm, we have assessed the probability of success after anterior sphincter repair.
METHODS: Prospective anorectal physiology data of 72 patients undergoing anterior sphincter repair was collec

The ability of backpropagation and adaptive resonance theory (ART) neural networks to predict the probability of complete suicide, within a two year span, in major psychiatric patients was investigated. Variables associated with suicide risk were collected from the files of 161 hospitalized psychiatric patients with a 10 year or greater history of illness. 84 patients were hospitalized due to suicide attempts and 77 had no previous suicide attempts or ideations. Suicide attempts were rated as medically serious suicide attempts (MSSA) or non-MSSA and used for training the systems. The ability o

This study demonstrates the application of neural networks to predict the pharmacokinetic properties of beta-adrenoreceptor antagonists in humans. A congeneric series of 10 beta-blockers, whose critical pharmacokinetic parameters are well established, was selected for the study. An appropriate neural network system was constructed and tested for its ability to predict the pharmacokinetic parameters from the octanol/water partition coefficient (shake flask method), the pKa, or the fraction bound to plasma proteins. Neural networks successfully trained and the predicted pharmacokinetic values ag

One approach to addressing the immense unmet need for treatments of severe opioid use disorder (sOUD) is to understand more about associated changes in the brain's reward circuitry. It has been shown that during reward anticipation in the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) task, people with severe substance use disorder (SUD) show blunted responses in reward neural circuitry compared with healthy controls (HC). Conversely, drug-related cues result in heightened responses in the same neural reward circuitry in those with SUD compared with HC. However, it is unclear how such dysfunctional reward pro

To learn to read, the brain must repurpose neural systems for oral language and visual processing to mediate written language. We begin with a description of computational models for how alphabetic written language is processed. Next, we explain the roles of a dorsal sublexical system in the brain that relates print and speech, a ventral lexical system that develops the visual expertise for rapid orthographic processing at the word level, and the role of cognitive control networks that regulate attentional processes as children read. We then use studies of children, adult illiterates learning

Optical neuromorphic computing offers promising avenues for real-time image processing and low-power artificial intelligence. Here, we introduce and experimentally validate a fundamentally new computing paradigm that exploits optical exciton dynamics in two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures. The type-II band alignment and high permittivity (ε ≈ 19) enable exciton control, achieving an exciton-to-trion ratio of ∼7 under electric field modulation at room temperature. Quasi-linear trion photoluminescence acts as an optical synaptic response, with weights dynamically tuned by substrate vo

This study presents a multi-scale computational framework to quantify how externally applied acoustic waves propagate through the knee joint and induce mechanotransductive strain at the level of the chondrocyte nucleus. Patient-specific knee geometries (n = 8) were used to simulate acoustic wave transmission through layered tissues, while a representative volume element modelled the coupled solid-shell-acoustic behaviour of the chondrocyte, pericellular matrix, and extracellular matrix. Modal and frequency-response analyses identified the spheroidal s3 mode as the dominant contributor to nucle

Automated segmentation of breast lesions in ultrasound videos is critical for clinical applications but remains hindered by the reliance on expensive pixel-wise annotations. While scribble supervision offers a user-friendly alternative, its potential for ultrasound video segmentation remains underexplored. In this regard, we propose ScribSAM, a novel scribble-supervised framework built on the Medical Segment Anything Model (MedSAM) for robust ultrasound video segmentation. ScribSAM integrates two key innovations: a flow-guided scribble propagation module that leverages optical flow to efficien

Background: Multimodal breast ultrasound, including B-mode imaging, color Doppler flow imaging, and elastography, provides complementary information for lesion characterization. However, effectively integrating heterogeneous modalities remains challenging due to inconsistent feature distributions, limited cross-modal interaction, computational cost in existing methods, and sensitivity to noise and missing data. Methods: We presented an efficient Cross-Modal Interaction and Dynamic Fusion Network (CIDFNet) for multimodal breast ultrasound analysis. The framework integrates a multi-scale feature

Assessing changes in mean sea level (MSL) has become increasingly critical due to the significance of climate changes. Soft computing techniques are now widely used to reduce the time and cost associated with traditional MSL estimation methods. Historical MSL data is frequently used to predict future values, yet the application of soft computing models to analyze climate change's impact on MSL remains relatively unexplored. This study aims to develop and compare various soft computing techniques for modeling MSL fluctuations using meteorological data. Random forest (RF), support vector regress

BACKGROUND: Deep learning models have shown strong potential for automated fracture detection in medical images. However, their robustness under varying image quality remains uncertain, particularly for small and subtle fractures, such as scaphoid fractures. Understanding how different types of image perturbations affect model performance is crucial for ensuring reliable deployment in clinical practice.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the robustness of a deep learning model trained to detect scaphoid fractures in radiographs when exposed to various image perturbations. We sought to id

Cervical cancer ranks as the fourth most prevalent cancer among women worldwide. Early diagnosis facilitates timely intervention and treatment. Traditional colposcopy is a widely employed technique for evaluating cervical lesions. Nevertheless, the growing number of patients with cervical cancer, and the rising workload of doctors may lead to misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis. Therefore, many researchers use deep learning to make paramedical diagnoses of cervical disease. However, the current neural network models for cervical image recognition lead to poor diagnostic results due to limitations

Active Surveillance (AS) is a treatment option for managing low and intermediate-risk prostate cancer (PCa), aiming to avoid overtreatment while monitoring disease progression through serial MRI and clinical follow-up. Accurate prostate segmentation is an important preliminary step for automating this process, enabling automated detection and diagnosis of PCa. However, existing deep-learning segmentation models are often trained on single-time-point, expertly annotated datasets, making them unsuitable for longitudinal AS analysis, where multiple time points and a scarcity of expert labels hind

BACKGROUND: Taste perception is the process by which the gustatory system detects and interprets chemical stimuli from food and beverages, involving activation of taste receptors on the tongue. Analyzing taste perception is essential for understanding human sensory responses and diagnosing taste-related disorders.
NEW METHOD: This research focuses on developing a deep learning framework to effectively recognize basic taste stimuli from EEG signals. Initially, the recorded EEG signals undergo preprocessing to remove noise and artifacts. The CEEMDAN (complete ensemble empirical mode decompositi

State-of-the-art radar systems for the contactless monitoring of vital signs and respiratory diseases are typically based on single-channel continuous wave (CW) technology. This technique allows precise measurements of respiration patterns, periods of movement, and heart rate. Major practical problems arise as CW systems suffer from signal cancellation due to destructive interference, limited overall functionality, and a possibility of low signal quality over longer periods. This work introduces a sophisticated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) solution that captures a radar image to estim

Early diagnosis of breast cancer remains a significant global health challenge, and the potential use of deep learning in Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) based breast cancer diagnosis is a promising avenue. To address data scarcity and domain shift problems in building a lesion malignancy predictive model, we proposed a domain adaptive automated multiobjective neural network (Adaptive-AutoMO) for reliable lesion malignancy prediction via DBT. Adaptive-AutoMO addresses three key challenges simultaneously, they are: privacy preserving, credibility measurement, and balance, which consists of t

Parkinson's disease (PD), as the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder worldwide, impacts the quality of life for over 12 million patients. This study aims to enhance the accuracy of early diagnosis of PD through non-invasive methods, with the goal of enabling earlier intervention in the disease process. To this end, we constructed an open-field environment using flexible sensors under dark conditions, conducting experiments on a mouse model of Parkinson's disease alongside a normal control group. By processing footprint images collected in the absence of light-employing numerical a

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious global health issue that often leads to temporary or permanent loss of sensation and motor function. Early and accurate detection is crucial for improving patient outcomes. This study proposes a novel SCI detection model using CT images. The workflow includes preprocessing with Gaussian filtering for noise reduction and Z-score normalization for intensity adjustment. A Modified Deep Joint (MDJ) segmentation approach is then used to accurately segment spinal cord regions, followed by the extraction of connectivity, SLBT, color, statistical, and improved cor
