BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disorder which usually begins in early adulthood. The diagnosis is often delayed by many years. MR imaging has become the preferred imaging method for detection of early inflammation of the axial skeleton in ankylosing spondylitis. The goal of this study was to assess the frequency and distribution of abnormalities on whole body MR imaging in patients with suspected early ankylosing spondylitis and with active confirmed ankylosing spondylitis.

A ventilator-dependent child had been in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) ever since birth. As a result, she had fallen behind considerably in her development. After 18 months, continuous positive airway pressure was successfully administered via a tracheostomy tube with a novel lightweight device. This enabled her to walk in the PICU. Since 1991 ten patients, 9 male and 1 female, with aortic arch aneurysm underwent surgical therapy with trapdoor thoracotomy. The mean age was 67.4 +/- 9.1 (standard deviation) years at operation. In addition to the aortic arch repair, we also performed seven descending aortic replacements. We performed one partial arch replacement, one total arch replacement, and one aneurysmorrhaphy and wrapping of the aortic arch aneurysm. We experienced 1 case of paraplegia, no hospital death, and no long-term mortality.

There are many possible complications after cannulation of the internal jugular vein (IJV) including injury to the brachial plexus. Neurologic injuries can also occur from sternal splitting. The present study looked at the incidence of brachial plexus lesions after cardiac surgery with and without IJV cannulation. Over 12 months, 815 patients were studied after all types of cardiac surgery. In one half of the group, cannulation of the IJV was avoided when possible.
