A man with a history of alcoholism presented on two different occasions with mental changes, clinical signs of volume depletion, elevated serum osmolal gap, metabolic acidosis with high anion gap, metabolic alkalosis, hyponatremia, and azotemia after binge drinking of only ethanol. Herein we report a new technique combining acoustic levitation and infrared thermography to directly monitor droplet surface temperatures. Using it, temperature profiles were recorded during the evaporation of deionized water, methanol, n-propanol, and isopropanol. Results support the viability of this inexpensive and easily-accessed technique for studying chemical and physical changes in droplets.

BACKGROUND: It has been shown that nontoxic concentrations of ethanol are absorbed after hand hygiene using ethanol-based hand rubs. This study investigated whether absorption of propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol from commercially available hand rubs results in measurable concentrations after use.
METHODS: The pulmonary and dermal absorption of propanol during hand rubs was investigated. Rubs contained 70% (w/w) propan-1-ol, 63.14% (w/w) propan-2-ol, or 45% (w/w) propan-2-ol in combination with 30% (w/w) propan-1-ol.

The effect of formulation factors on the steady-state flux of hydrocortisone through mouse skin was evaluated. The flux of hydrocortisone from solutions containing propylene glycol as a cosolvent varied inversely with the propylene glycol concentration. Elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) are one of the most widely-studied classes of protein material because of their lower critical solution temperature (LCST)-like thermoresponsive behavior in aqueous solutions. We characterized the effects of ethanol (ET) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on H(2)O within a limited H(2)O-rich region by the 1-propanol (1P)-probing methodology developed by us earlier.
