Clinical Application of Body Composition Methods in Premature Infants.

Monitoring whole body composition (fat mass and fat-free mass) in preterm infants may assist in optimizing nutrition and promoting growth and neurodevelopment in the neonatal intensive care unit. Currently, body composition assessment is not part of routine clinical evaluation of premature infants. Instead, weight and length are used to assess growth but are known to be poor predictors of adiposity shortly after birth. Although body composition methods, such as magnetic resonance imaging, stable-isotope dilution, and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, have been examined in infants, they involve

New anthropometric and biochemical models for estimating appendicular skeletal muscle mass in male patients with cirrhosis.

OBJECTIVES: The use of easily accessible methods to estimate skeletal muscle mass (SMM) in patients with cirrhosis is often limited by the presence of edema and ascites, precluding a reliable diagnosis of sarcopenia. The aim of this study was to design predictive models using variables derived from anthropometric and/or biochemical measures to estimate SMM; and to validate their applicability in diagnosing sarcopenia in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS: Anthropometric and biochemical data were obtained from 124 male patients (18-76 y of age) with cirrhosis who also underwent dual-energy x-ray

Relationship between vertebral fracture prevalence and abdominal aortic calcification in women with rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVES: Vertebral fracture assessment (VFA)-detected abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) has been validated as an indicator of increased risk of vertebral fractures (VFs) in other populations but this relationship in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is unclear. We assess the prevalence of AAC on VFA scans and its potential relationship with prevalent VFs in a cohort of RA women. METHODS: We enrolled 250 women with RA. VFA images, and scans of the lumbar spine and proximal femur were obtained using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. The presence/severity of VFs and AAC were carried out using vali

Adiposity and bone microarchitecture in the GLOW study.

UNLABELLED: Low body mass index (BMI) is an established risk factor for fractures in postmenopausal women but the interaction of obesity with bone microarchitecture is not fully understood. In this study, obesity was associated with more favourable bone microarchitecture parameters but not after parameters were normalised for body weight. INTRODUCTION: To examine bone microarchitecture in relation to fat mass and examine both areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and microarchitecture in relation to BMI categories in the UK arm of the Global Longitudinal Study of Osteoporosis in Women. METHODS:

Computer-aided diagnosis system for osteoporosis based on quantitative evaluation of mandibular lower border porosity using panoramic radiographs.

OBJECTIVES: A new computer-aided screening system for osteoporosis using panoramic radiographs was developed. The conventional system could detect porotic changes within the lower border of the mandible, but its severity could not be evaluated. Our aim was to enable the system to measure severity by implementing a linear bone resorption severity index (BRSI) based on the cortical bone shape. METHODS: The participants were 68 females (>50 years) who underwent panoramic radiography and lumbar spine bone density measurements. The new system was designed to extract the lower border of the mandibl

No relationship between bone mineral density and syndesmophyte formation at the same level in the lumbar spine of patients with radiographic axial Spondyloarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate if in radiographic axial Spondyloarthritis (r-axSpA) low vertebral bone mineral density (BMD) is associated with development of new syndesmophytes at the same vertebral level. METHODS: In a post-hoc analysis from the ASSERT trial (infliximab vs placebo), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure baseline BMD (g/cm2) of the lumbar spine L1 to L4. Syndesmophyte formation was assessed in the same vertebrae on conventional radiographs defined as an increase in modified Stoke Ankylosing Spondylitis Spine Score from 0 or 1 to 2 or 3 after 2 years. Radiographs we

Femur segmentation in DXA imaging using a machine learning decision tree.

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) in dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is essential for proper diagnosis of osteoporosis. Calculation of BMD requires precise bone segmentation and subtraction of soft tissue absorption. Femur segmentation remains a challenge as many existing methods fail to correctly distinguish femur from soft tissue. Reasons for this failure include low contrast and noise in DXA images, bone shape variability, and inconsistent X-ray beam penetration and attenuation, which cause shadowing effects and person-to-person variation. OBJECTIVE: To

Screening for Atypical Femur Fractures Using Extended Femur Scans by DXA.

Atypical femur fractures (AFFs) are a rare but serious complication associated with the use of antiresorptive drugs such as bisphosphonates. Assessment of incomplete AFFs on extended femur scans by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) may prevent the development of complete fractures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of extended femur scans by DXA as a screening tool for incomplete AFFs. From June 2014 until September 2016, extended femur scans were routinely performed in all consecutive patients undergoing DXA scanning who had used bisphosphonates or denosumab at any give

Body fat measurement in adolescent girls with type 1 diabetes: a comparison of skinfold equations against dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

AIM: Skinfold measurement is an inexpensive and widely used technique for assessing the percentage of body fat (%BF). This study assessed the accuracy of prediction equations for %BF based on skinfold measurements compared to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in girls with type 1 diabetes and healthy age-matched controls. METHODS: We included 49 healthy girls and 44 girls with diabetes aged 12-19 years old, comparing the predicted %BF based on skinfold measurements and the %BF values obtained by a Lunar DPX-L scanner. The agreement between the methods was assessed using an Bland-Altman p

An uncommon cause of acquired osteosclerosis in adults: hepatitis C-associated osteosclerosis.

Hepatitis C-associated osteosclerosis (HCAO) is a rare sclerosing bone condition characterized by debilitating, predominantly lower extremity bone pain, accelerated bone turnover, and a generalized increase in histologically normal trabecular and cortical bone tissue. Herein we report the clinical presentation and imaging results of the 19th case of HCAO. Clinicians, particularly those caring for a population at risk for HCV infection, should be aware of this uncommon condition. The etio-pathogenesis of HCAO remains obscure but may bear important lessons in bone biology that could lead to new

"Trabecular Bone Score" (TBS): an indirect measure of bone micro-architecture in postmenopausal patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND: Patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) generally show reduced bone mineral density (BMD) at cortical sites with relatively preserved trabecular bone. However, the increased fracture risk at all skeletal sites suggests that areal BMD probably is not effective in capturing all the determinants of bone strength. "Trabecular Bone Score" (TBS) has been recently proposed as an indirect measure of bone micro-architecture. Our study was aimed to investigate TBS in patients with PHPT. METHODS: Seventy-three Caucasian postmenopausal women with PHPT and 74 age-matched healthy women

Statistical model based analysis of bone mineral density of lumbar spine.

OBJECTIVE: For planning surgical interventions at the spine affected by osteoporosis, accurate information about the local bone quality in terms of anchorage strength for implants is very important. Based on previous work on automated bone quality assessment on the proximal femur with a completely automated model-based approach, this paper describes first applications and results on the lumbar vertebrae. MATERIALS AND METHODS: As basis for the analysis, CT datasets of 17 spinal specimens, with a resolution of 0.7 mm x 0.7 mm x 0.7 mm have been used. A combined statistical model of 3D shape an
