Sociocultural and developmental influences on body dissatisfaction and disordered eating attitudes and behaviors of Asian women.

This study is an examination of the influence of sociocultural and developmental factors on body dissatisfaction and disordered eating attitudes and behaviors in two Asian populations: 298 Taiwanese-American (TA) women undergoing acculturating changes and 347 Taiwanese (T) women undergoing modernizing changes. Contrary to the initial hypothesis, body dissatisfaction rates and disordered eating attitudes and behaviors were found to be significantly higher in the T group. Subjects in the T group had higher Taiwanese ethnic identity scores but also lower perceptions of maternal control. Body diss

Targeted ethnography as a critical step to inform cultural adaptations of HIV prevention interventions for adults with severe mental illness.

As in other countries worldwide, adults with severe mental illness (SMI) in Brazil are disproportionately infected with HIV relative to the general population. Brazilian psychiatric facilities lack tested HIV prevention interventions. To adapt existing interventions, developed only in the US, we conducted targeted ethnography with adults with SMI and staff from two psychiatric institutions in Brazil. We sought to characterize individual, institutional, and interpersonal factors that may affect HIV risk behavior in this population. We conducted 350 hours of ethnographic field observations in tw

The changing meaning of family support among older Chinese and Korean immigrants.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective in this study was to examine how family social-support expectations have changed among older Chinese and Korean U.S … s are adjusting to living in the United States and blending multiple cultures simultaneously. Thus, acculturation frameworks implying a linear process may not be theoretically valid as ethnic identity, particularly for those who immigrate to different countries, changes over the life course.

Research on disclosure of HIV status: cultural evolution finds an ally in science.

This editorial responds to Mason et al.'s (1995) "Culturally Sanctioned Secrets: Latino Men's Nondisclosure of HIV Infection to Family, Friends, and Lovers." Culture is an evolving dynamic phenomenon shaped by society, psychology, and history. Historically, familism and simpatía have been Hispanic cultural assets. As times change, however, values and behaviors that served a culture for generations may become liabilities unless they evolve to fit the changing world of the culture. In the case of Hispanic gay men, the desire to protect family members is a barrier to disclosure of HIV status. Mas

["How goes it, Awa?" Nutritional deficiency, emotional deprivation, severe depressive state in an child under 2 years of age. Diagnostic and therapeutic problems].

The authors report a very illustrative case of analytic depression in an infant under two years of age. The significance of this observation is in the overwhelming nature of symptoms with a characteristic marasmus syndrome fitting classic descriptions, and in the deliberate approach which led a pedo-psychiatric team to an understanding of the problems and to a rapid and dramatic reparation. By the ascription of a significant role to the impact of mother-child, mother-family and social circle relationships, involved members were able to determine their place and reassume their role and function

Mother tongue and the language of tenderness: lost and found.

This paper explores the impact of early aesthetic experiences on the developing psyche. The sound bath in the environment experienced by the fetus and then newborn is registered as implicit memory in the non-repressed unconscious and imparts a sense of belonging or alienation, depending on the nature of the early maternal object relations. In the case of the child, displaced from the early mothering culture by flight and emigration, an added stress is acculturation and loss of the familiar sights, sounds, smells of the homely culture, but also the loss of musicality of the language. The clinic…

Minority Stress Scale for the Deaf (MSS-D): an adapted measure for quantifying stress associated with audism.

The purpose of this study was to assess stress among culturally Deaf, physically deaf, and hard-of-hearing (D/deaf/HH) individuals. Given that these individuals are minorities within a hearing-based society, we adapted the Minority Stress Scale to examine the stress related to perceived audism from others (i.e., the feeling that they are being treated with an inferior bias due to their lack of hearing) and the stress related to internalized audism (i.e., an internal inferior bias against their own lack of hearing). A sample of 104 D/deaf/HH individuals completed this adapted scale (Minority St

Do You Speak English or Spanish? Language as a Predictor of Health Outcomes Among Hispanic Adolescents.

Language is our primary tool for communication and a salient component of acculturation status among Hispanic populations. Importantly, language is associated with behavioral health outcomes and can identify and confront health disparities among Hispanic adolescents. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between adolescent language identity and drug use and depressive symptoms and examine parent-adolescent communication and parent language identity as mediators and moderators, respectively, of this association. We conducted a secondary data analysis (N = 746) of a study eva…

Psychopathology and management of hospitalized Ethiopian immigrant adolescents in Israel.

Over a period of about 12 months a large number of Ethiopian Jews emigrated to Israel under very stressful conditions. Many of these immigrants were adolescents who came on their own, leaving their families behind. Despite the culture shock involved, most have done well. Nine of these youngsters, who developed psychiatric disabilities severe enough to warrant hospitalization, were referred to us. In this paper we describe the clinical and management problems posed by these patients.

Advance care planning and hospice utilization among Japanese Americans: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Although advance care planning (ACP) has increased in recent years, there is still a discrepancy in the utilization of these res … cs, suggesting cultural and systemic influences. Key factors included lack of procedural knowledge, acculturation, and preferences for shared decision models. DISCUSSION: Though Japanese Americans express interest in ACP, cultural and systemic barriers persist. Effective ACP must incorporate culturally sensitive education, family-inclusive approaches, and trai …

Social and psychological correlates of unprotected anal intercourse among Hispanic-American women: implications for STI/HIV prevention.

Heterosexual anal intercourse is associated with increased risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Research on the social and psychological risk factors associated with heterosexual unprotected anal intercourse among Hispanic women in the USA is limited. We examined demographic, mental health, relationship power, sexual self-efficacy, self-esteem, acculturation and HIV knowledge as correlates of unprotected anal intercourse among 514 HIV-negative Hispanic women, 18 to 59 years of age, residing in one urban county in southern Florida. In both unadjusted and adjusted results, the…

Differences between native and immigrant women in Taiwan in factors associated with caesarean section: A prospective observational study.

This study aimed to examine the association of social support, social factors, and maternal complications with caesarean deliveries in native and immigrant women, and to explore the association between acculturation and caesarean deliveries in immigrant women in Taiwan. This prospective panel study was conducted from August 2012 through April 2014 and included 222 native and 147 immigrant pregnant women in Taiwan. Caesarean rates did not differ significantly between native and immigrant women, including the overall caesarean rate (28.8%, 32.0%), medically indicated caesarean (22.5%, 24.5%), an…

Fetal deaths in Mexican-American, black, and white non-Hispanic women seeking government-funded prenatal care.

Hispanics of Mexican origin constitute the largest minority population in the Southwestern United States, yet little is known about their re … an non-Hispanics. In contrast, Hispanic women had a higher proportion of term stillbirths. Hispanic acculturation was a significant predictor of short-term gestation fetal deaths only. The inability to pay for health care was a strong predictor of fetal deaths for all ethnic groups, underscoring the need to ensure adequate access to maternity care for low-incom …

Health risk behaviors of Hispanics in the United States: findings from HHANES, 1982-84.

With data from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HHANES), we examined several health risk behaviors (cigarette smoking, alcohol use, dietary practices, and recency of health screening) of Mexican American, Cuban American, and Puerto Rican adults (ages 20-74). For each sample, a greater percentage of men than women smoked cigarettes and used alcohol. Heavy smoking (20+ cigarettes per day) was most prevalent for Cuban American males, and heavy drinking (1.00+ oz ethanol per day) was most prevalent for Mexican American and Puerto Rican men. Acculturation correlated positively …
