OBJECTIVES: As a treatment for partial deafness with residual hearing in the lower frequency range, the combined acoustic and electric stimulation of the cochlea has become widespread. Acoustic stimulation is provided by a hearing aid's airborne sound and the electric stimulation by a cochlear implant electrode array, which may be inserted through the round window or a cochleostomy. To take advantage of that concept, it is essential to preserve residual hearing after surgery. Therefore, the intracochlear electrode array should not compromise the middle ear vibration transmission. This study in…

OBJECTIVES: Tinnitus has no reliable cure but may be significantly relieved by the usage of cochlear implants. However, not all tinnitus patients necessitate cochlear implantation that can impair hearing. This study was to investigate whether a novel extracochlear electrical stimulation (EES) strategy could relieve tinnitus of guinea pigs without hearing impairment, and the roles of auditory-somatosensory plasticity in the cochlear nucleus in the tinnitus relief.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used a novel four-electrode extracochlear implant to electrically stimulate the cochlea of tinnitus guine

Although performance with bilateral cochlear implants is superior to that with a unilateral implant, bilateral implantees have poor performance in sound localisation and in speech discrimination in noise compared to normal hearing subjects. Studies of the neural processing of interaural time differences (ITDs) in the inferior colliculus (IC) of long-term deaf animals, show substantial degradation compared to that in normal hearing animals. It is not known whether this degradation can be ameliorated by chronic cochlear electrical stimulation, but such amelioration is unlikely to be achieved usi

Tinnitus is one of the most common otological symptoms and can be defined as the conscious perception of sound lasting more than 5 minutes in the absence of an external auditory stimulus. Based on the review of articles, a comparative analysis of modern methods of diagnosis and treatment of tinnitus was carried out in order to substantiate the most effective and promising algorithms for providing care to patients. Diagnosis of tinnitus includes taking anamnesis, assessing the severity of tinnitus using questionnaires, otoscopy, hearing examination, and performing additional tests. In case of s

Vagus nerve stimulation is a promising new tool in the treatment of chronic tinnitus. Current protocols involve pairing sounds, which exclude the tinnitus frequency, with simultaneous vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). This is based on extensive preclinical animal studies that demonstrate that pairing non-tinnitus sounds with VNS results in a tonotopic map plasticity. It is thought that by expanding the non-tinnitus sound representation, it is possible to overturn the expanded tonotopic map associated with the tinnitus frequency in these animal models. These findings have been translated into a cl

Evidence of multisensory interactions within low-level cortices and at early post-stimulus latencies has prompted a paradigm shift in conceptualizations of sensory organization. However, the mechanisms of these interactions and their link to behavior remain largely unknown. One behaviorally salient stimulus is a rapidly approaching (looming) object, which can indicate potential threats. Based on findings from humans and nonhuman primates suggesting there to be selective multisensory (auditory-visual) integration of looming signals, we tested whether looming sounds would selectively modulate th

Two experiments investigated the role of distractor characteristics and type of object-directed attention on infants' distraction latencies during object exploration. In Experiment 1, 7- and 10-month-old infants' distraction latency was a function of both attention and the characteristics of the distractors. Infants took longer to turn toward distractors during focused object-directed attention than when engaged in more casual attention. In addition, their latencies were longer regardless of attention type when the distractors were unimodal (e.g., consisting of only a visual or an auditory com

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique whose effects on the voice have been explored, although still in a preliminary manner. The aim of this exploratory study was to verify the immediate effect of tDCS combined with straw phonation in water technique on the voice of adults with and without vocal symptoms. Twenty-two volunteers (11 with vocal symptoms and 11 without vocal symptoms) were evaluated before and after the exercise with straw phonation in water and tDCS session in primary motor cortex (M1). All participants underwent one anodal tDCS

The efferent auditory system is thought to play a role in the origin of tinnitus. Part of this system can be tested in humans with contralateral suppression of otoacoustic emissions. Stimulation of the medial olivocochlear efferent system is responsible for this reduction of otoacoustic emissions after contralateral acoustic stimulation. Previous research on patients with tinnitus showed inconclusive results. With wavelet analysis both time and frequency information of the emission can be analysed and compared. Contralateral suppression of otoacoustic emissions was therefore measured in tinnit…

Auditory perceptions produced in a person deaf to acoustic stimulation were studied by electrically exciting the auditory nerve through permanently implanted electrodes. Pulsed current as small as 1 microampere peak-to-peak could be perceived. Pitch, as reported by the subject, varied with electrode selection, current amplitude, and pulse repetition rate from about 70 to at least 300 pulses per second. Loudness increased with amplitude and duration of pulse stimuli, and to a lesser extent with repetition rate. The total range in amplitude of the stimulus, from threshold to an uncomfortable lou…

A new application of auditory evoked potentials using direct cochlear nerve action potentials (CNAPs) for monitoring middle fossa acoustic neuroma resection with attempted hearing preservation is described. Twenty patients have been studied to date. With this technique, a monitoring electrode is secured between the floor of the internal auditory canal and the dura adjacent to the cochlear nerve in an extradural location. Standard auditory evoked potential techniques with click stimuli and microelectrical recording allow observation of nearfield waveforms in seconds versus several minutes requi

Two profoundly hard-of-hearing and deaf patients were examined by non-invasive extracranial magnetic stimulation (EMS) in an effort to determine whether EMS could evoke auditory sensations. The patients were fitted with standard earplugs and were stimulated at the auricle, the mastoid and the temporal lobe area. The threshold of auditory sensation (TAS) was determined at each stimulus position and found to be approximately 20-40% of the maximum EMS level (2.0 Tesla). The TAS was generally lowest in mastoid stimulation, but was variable, and dependent on the angle and position of the stimulatin

Middle ear muscle contractions (MEMCs) are most commonly considered a response to high-level acoustic stimuli. However, MEMCs have also been observed in the absence of sound, either as a response to somatosensory stimulation or in concert with other motor activity. The relationship between MEMCs and non-acoustic sources is unclear. This study examined associations between measures of voluntary unilateral eye closure and impedance-based measures indicative of middle ear muscle activity while controlling for demographic and clinical factors in a large group of participants (N=190) with present c

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder associated with cognitive decline and significant global health burden. Current treatments offer limited benefits, highlighting the need for novel therapies. Gamma-frequency auditory and visual stimulation (GFAVS), utilizing 40 Hz neuromodulation, has gained attention as a non-invasive treatment for cognitive deficits and underlying pathophysiology in AD.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of GFAVS in treating Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive imp

It is well known that the nervous system adjusts itself to its environment during development. Although a great deal of effort has been directed towards understanding the developmental processes of the individual sensory systems (e.g., vision, hearing, etc.), only one major study has examined the maturation of multisensory processing in cortical neurons. Therefore, the present investigation sought to evaluate multisensory development in a different cortical region and species. Using multiple single-unit recordings in anaesthetised ferrets (n = 18) of different ages (from postnatal day 80 to 30

The paper reports the case of sibs, brother and sister, with Martin-Bell's syndrome confirmed cytogenetically. Mental retardation and autism were the main phenomena in the clinical picture. Positive effect was achieved by means of Skvortsov--Osipenko method (metameric injection of cerebral hydrolysates' preparations, stimulation of visual, acoustic and proprioceptive analyzers). A decline of the signs of intellectual retardation and autism were observed in both children.

Evoked potentials (EP) were analysed in patients with idiopathic form of Parkinson's disease (PD) in terms of three modalities: visual EP of chess pattern, acoustic EP of brain stem and somato-sensory EP during stimulation of median and tibial nerves. The data were compared with clinical characteristics. The conclusion was drawn about evident participation of afferent systems in PD development which is apparently secondary.
