Patients With Normal Tension Glaucoma Have Relative Sparing of the Relative Afferent Pupillary Defect Compared to Those With Open Angle Glaucoma and Elevated Intraocular Pressure.

PURPOSE: We determined whether there is relative sparing of pupil function in glaucoma patients with normal pressures compared to those with high pressures. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was done of 68 patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG): 38 had normal IOPs on all-day phasing before treatment (never >21 mm Hg), with confirmed progression of glaucomatous optic neuropathy (NTG) and 30 had glaucomatous optic neuropathy associated with elevated intraocular pressures (>25 mm Hg; HP-POAG). The relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) was quantified with the RAPDx device, and mean d

Elevated dark-adapted thresholds in albino rodents.

Albino mice and rats have elevated dark-adapted thresholds compared to normally pigmented animals. The absolute dark-adapted incremental threshold for black mice is about 1.5 log units lower than the threshold for albino mice when measured by single-unit recordings from the superior colliculus. Cell counts from the outer nuclear layer in albino mice are not significantly different from those in black mice, indicating that the elevated dark-adapted thresholds are not due to light damage of photoreceptor cells. No photoreceptor outer segment damage was found in these albino animals at the light

Abnormalities of ERG in congenital aniridia.

Congenital aniridia is generally associated with nystagmus, corneal pannus, cataract, ectopia lentis, glaucoma, macular hypoplasia, optic nerve hypoplasia and compromised visual function. Many theories have been proposed, including a failure in the development of the neural ectoderm and/or an aberrant development of mesoderm. We observed the ERG from 19 patients with congenital aniridia. Fourteen patients had abnormal ERG, including the reduced a wave trough under dark adapted red stimuli with dark adaptation; abnormal a or/and b waves in dark or/and light adapted ERG or abnormal oscillatory p

Ocular sarcoidosis in adults and children: update on clinical manifestation and diagnosis.

Sarcoidosis-associated uveitis, is the predominant ocular sarcoidosis presentation, which affects both adults and children. For adults, international ocular sarcoidosis criteria (IWOS) and sarcoidosis-associated uveitis criteria (SUN) are defined. However, for children they are not yet established internationally. Due to the specificity of pediatric manifestations of sarcoidosis, this task is even more challenging. In children, sarcoidosis is subdivided into Blau syndrome and early-onset sarcoidosis (BS/EOS) affecting younger children (< 5 years) and the one affecting older children with clini

Canine and feline retinal lymphoma: a retrospective review of 12 cases.

This retrospective study identified 12 cases (6 canine and 6 feline) of ocular lymphoma with extensive retinal involvement and relative sparing of other ocular tissues. Our objectives were to describe the morphologic and immunohistochemical features of retinal lymphoma, assess the degree of correlation to the human counterpart, assign subtypes based on the veterinary-adapted WHO classification system, and promote accurate reporting of retinal involvement in cases of intraocular lymphoma. Our findings suggest that a distinct retinal tropism is quite rare, representing approximately 1% of all ca

Absolute quantification of TCA cycle intermediates in mouse ocular tissues reveals distinct tissue- and sex-specific mitochondrial metabolism.

OBJECTIVE: Mitochondrial tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle is central to energy production and redox balance in the eye, which must sustain high metabolic activity to support vision. Retinal neurons, the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), cornea, and lens each have distinct physiological roles and metabolic demands, yet the absolute concentrations of key TCA intermediates and their variation by tissue, sex, and time of day are not well-defined. METHODS: Targeted gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was employed to quantify the absolute concentrations of TCA cycle metabolites in mouse ocular tissu

Effect of Induced Myopia on the Vestibulo-ocular Reflex Evaluated by Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential.

PURPOSE: The possible effects of refractive errors on vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) has been a conflicting issue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of induced myopia on VOR using the ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential (oVEMP). METHODS: In this cross-sectional quasi-experimental study, 35 emmetropic and normal subjects with the mean age of 23.89 ± 3.93 (range, 20-40 years) without any ocular, nervous system, and vestibular disorders, underwent the oVEMP test in the comprehensive rehabilitation center of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. The oVEMP was performed un

Eye movements of the murine P/Q calcium channel mutant rocker, and the impact of aging.

Mutations in the gene encoding the ion pore of the P/Q voltage-activated calcium channel (CACNA1A) are predicted to alter synaptic transmission and dendritic excitability within cerebellar granule and Purkinje cells. Determining the relationships between these alterations, neuronal activity, and behavior may yield insight into the relationship between neuronal intrinsic properties and signal processing within the ocular motor system. Toward this end, we compared ocular motor performance in the CACNA1A mutant rocker and C57BL/6 controls. Average vertical eye position was abnormally elevated in

[Ocular side effects of deferoxamine therapy in aplastic anemia with transfusion-induced hemochromatosis].

BACKGROUND: Deferoxamine, an iron chelating agent, has been used for the treatment of hemochromatosis for more than 30 years. Ocular toxicity has begun to be reported only in the last few years. In most cases differentiation of the true etiology, i.e. the underlying disease versus the toxicity of the substance, is not clear. We report a patient with development of severe ocular toxicity during treatment with deferoxamine for transfusional hemochromatosis. HISTORY AND SIGNS: An 8-year-old boy was routinely evaluated in the eye clinic before initiation of treatment with deferoxamine. Over the l

Antimicrobial peptides as a major part of the innate immune defense at the ocular surface.

The ocular surface is in constant contact with the environment (e.g. when using one's fingers to insert a contact lens) and thus also with diverse bacteria, bacterial components and their pathogen associated molecules. Dysfunctions of the tear film structure or decreased moistening of the ocular surface, as in dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) for example, often lead to inflammatory and infectious complications resulting in severe functional disorders, particularly concerning the cornea. Besides different protective antimicrobial substances in the tear fluid (mucins, lysozyme, lactoferrin),

Ocular gene therapies in clinical practice: viral vectors and nonviral alternatives.

Ocular gene therapy has entered into clinical practice. Although viral vectors are currently the best option to replace and/or correct genes, the optimal method to deliver these treatments to the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and/or photoreceptor cells remains to be improved to increase transduction efficacy and reduce iatrogenic risks. Beyond viral-mediated gene replacement therapies, nonviral gene delivery approaches offer the promise of sustained fine-tuned expression of secreted therapeutic proteins that can be adapted to the evolving stage of the disease course and can address mo

Orbital colour Doppler imaging.

Colour Doppler imaging (CDI) is an ultrasonic method for qualitatively and quantitatively assessing blood flow. Recently this technique has been adapted for investigation of the orbital, optic nerve and ocular vasculature. We discuss the history, principles and methodology of this examination technique for ophthalmology. Also described are normal haemodynamic characteristics as well as the findings in common pathological states involving derangements of orbital blood flow. Although CDI is relatively new to ophthalmology it has already proved to be of benefit in conditions with altered orbital,

Adaptation to interocular differences in blur.

Adaptation to a blurred image causes a physically focused image to appear too sharp, and shifts the point of subjective focus toward the adapting blur, consistent with a renormalization of perceived focus. We examined whether and how this adaptation normalizes to differences in blur between the two eyes, which can routinely arise from differences in refractive errors. Observers adapted to images filtered to simulate optical defocus or different axes of astigmatism, as well as to images that were isotropically blurred or sharpened by varying the slope of the amplitude spectrum. Adaptation to th

Luminance-modulated adaptation of global flash mfERG: fellow eye losses in asymmetric glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To use the global flash multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) in patients with asymmetric glaucoma to determine whether retinal function is affected in fellow eyes that have no glaucomatous visual field defects. METHODS: Forty normal subjects and 12 patients with asymmetric glaucoma were recruited for visual field and mfERG measurement. The mfERG was assessed by using a global-flash stimulation paradigm with four video frames: 103 scaled hexagonal elements followed by a dark frame, a global-flash frame, and a dark frame. The localized luminance difference was set at 96%, 65%, 49%, and
