Increased sense of identity in delusional disorders.

Language, which is unique in each subject, can reflect how a patient copes with disease. The method ALCESTE used here made it possible at the same time to analyse the subject's verbal behavior and speech patterns at several levels. The present study was designed to analyse during a 3-mo. period the language production of subjects with paranoia exhibiting delusional disorder (nonbizarre delusions without any hallucination) of imaginative subtype. The subjects produced very specific speech without any semantic or syntactic impairment and disruption in language or thinking processes, but with a p

An overview of the psychotherapy of dissociative identity disorder.

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is identified and studied with increasing frequency. However, the controversy that often surrounds DID can make it difficult to approach its treatment in a circumspect manner. This paper will provide an overview of DID treatment as it is practiced by those experienced and skilled in the treatment of this group of patients. The treatment of DID resembles the treatment of other traumatized populations in that it is stage-oriented, beginning with supportive and strengthening work. Various stances toward the treatment of DID are reviewed, and specific issues th

Psychological needs in individuals with lower limb amputation: a narrative review of evidence for clinical practice across the rehabilitation continuum.

PURPOSE: To synthesize the psychological needs of individuals undergoing lower-limb amputation (LLA) and their association with overall adjustment across the rehabilitation continuum, in order to propose clinical recommendations spanning the entire continuum of care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A narrative review was conducted in accordance with the SANRA criteria, using MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, and PsycArticles. We identified peer-reviewed studies published between 2000 and July 2025 that met the following criteria: original research; focused on individuals with LLA; examined psychological, emotio

Reversibility of disturbed pituitary function in pediatric conditions with psychological stressors: implications for clinical practice.

The complex communication network between the central nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary axis forms the basis of endocrine functional plasticity, which facilitates adaptation to changing internal and external conditions, but also makes it vulnerable to the negative effects of stressful psychological factors. Herein, clinical conditions such as functional hypothalamic amenorrhea, eating disorders, growth faltering, post-traumatic stress disorder, and pubertal disorders that may emerge during childhood or adolescence, their origin possibly including psychological stressors, are analyz

The physiological cost of coping: a systematic review and meta-analysis on discrimination and heart rate variability.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects parasympathetic regulation and is typically associated with better health outcomes. However, minoritized populations, particularly African Americans, show a paradoxical pattern of higher resting HRV despite greater cardiovascular risk, a phenomenon known as the Cardiovascular Conundrum. Discrimination has been proposed as a key mechanism, but evidence remains fragmented. METHODS: The present meta-analysis quantified HRV in relation to discrimination across 3 domains: (1) resting HRV differences between minoritized and majority groups, (2) HRV

A matter of timing: How early-life stress shapes emergent coping styles in zebrafish.

Adaptive flexibility is essential for organisms to survive and thrive in the face of environmental pressures. Throughout their life cycle, animals experience diverse stressful conditions. Early life stages are considered highly sensitive to environmental stressors, which may, during these stages, affect brain function leading to persistent behavioural disruption. Notably, individuals often differ in their responses. Coping styles represent consistent, individual-specific behavioural and neurophysiological responses to stressors, shaped by both genetic and environmental factors, and play a key

A Thematic Qualitative Synthesis on the Lived Experiences of Patients With Left Ventricular Assist Devices: A Journey From Vulnerability to Resilience.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are increasingly used in managing advanced heart failure. While their clinical benefits are well documented, less is known about how patients experience living with such life-sustaining devices. Understanding these experiences is essential for holistic, person-centred nursing care. AIM: To explore the lived experiences of LVAD recipients and examine how they cope with the emotional, psychological and social challenges of life with an LVAD. STUDY DESIGN: A systematic search was conducted across Scopus, PubMed and ScienceDirect using predefin

Psychosocial etiology and management of chronic pelvic pain in women: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Pelvic Pain (CPP) in women is a complicated disease. Psychosocial elements like stress, trauma, and mental illnesses frequently impact CPP in women. A biopsychosocial strategy emphasizing the integration of psychosocial approach for conceptualizing and managing this condition is necessary for effective management. Therefore, this systematic review was conducted to propose the psychosocial etiology and management strategies for CPP in women. METHOD: Research databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library, were used to search for relevant art

Identifying the psychosocial experience of lung transplant recipients across the transplant trajectory: A systematic review and narrative synthesis.

INTRODUCTION: Patients who receive lung transplantation generally experience dramatically improved physical well-being. However, transplantation is associated with elevated psychosocial distress. Reduced quality of life related to distress may compromise the net benefit of lung transplantation. Patients' concerns likely vary across the illness trajectory, however a comprehensive synthesis that spans the full lung transplant trajectory is absent from the current literature. This review aimed to identify the psychosocial concerns reported by adult lung transplant candidates across the transplant

Post-traumatic growth experience of breast cancer patients: A qualitative systematic review and meta-synthesis.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to systematically incorporate the post-traumatic growth experience of breast cancer patients and furnish insights for the formulation of targeted psychological care measures. METHODS: The search period we were ranged from establishing the database to February 2024. We systematically searched four Chinese databases and seven English databases. The focus was on collecting qualitative research literature regarding the post-traumatic growth experience of breast cancer patients. Literature was screened and analyzed using Endnote20 software. Quality evaluation was condu

Are the ways women cope with stressors related to their health behaviors over time?

OBJECTIVE: Emerging research suggests the use of certain strategies to cope with stressors relate to disease and mortality risk, and lifestyle habits may be underlying mechanisms. Studies show psychological symptoms (eg, anxiety) and states (eg, happiness) predict the likelihood of adopting an integrated lifestyle that encompasses key health-related behaviors, like smoking. Yet, whether psychological processes, including stress-related coping, influence the adoption of a healthy lifestyle is unknown. We investigated whether coping strategies typically deemed adaptive (eg, seeking emotional sup

A Systematic Review of the Impact of the Alcohol Hangover Upon Negative Affect.

ISSUE: Alcohol hangovers can occur after a single episode of drinking and begin as blood alcohol concentration returns to zero. While hangovers are widely known for their physical symptoms, they also include psychological symptoms such as a depressed mood. These psychological impacts, particularly negative affect (e.g., anxiety, stress), remain less well understood, yet may contribute to maladaptive drinking behaviours and reinforce the cycle of excessive alcohol consumption. APPROACH: This systematic review, pre-registered and reported in alignment with Preferred Reporting Items for Systemat

Association of Emotional Stress and Adaptive Behavior with Stroke Risk: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

Although emotional stress and adaptive behavior are known to influence cardiovascular health, direct evidence linking them to stroke remains limited. This study aims to clarify the associations between emotional stress, adaptive behaviors, and the risk of stroke. We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis using data from the UK Biobank, the European Bioinformatics Institute, the Integrative Epidemiology Unit, and the FinnGen project. Indirect effects were estimated using the product of coefficients method. Low satisfaction with family relationships was associated with increased
