Adenoid cystic carcinoma cytology: Salivary gland and nonsalivary gland.

OBJECTIVES: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACCA) is an uncommon primary malignancy of salivary glands and rarely nonsalivary tissue. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ACCA on fine needle aspiration (FNA) material and the associated challenges. METHODS: A search on electronic pathology database from 2006 to 2016 at The Johns Hopkins Hospital found 83 cytology specimens diagnosed as ACCA, 49 with histology follow-up. RESULTS: Fifty-two females and 31 males were found ranging from 37 to 95 years old (mean 62.5). The tumor size was 1 to 11.5 cm (mean 3.4). FNAs were performed on

Role of Biofilms in Children with Chronic Adenoiditis and Middle Ear Disease.

Chronic adenoiditis occurs frequently in children, and it is complicated by the subsequent development of recurrent or chronic middle ear diseases, such as recurrent acute otitis media, persistent otitis media with effusion and chronic otitis media, which may predispose a child to long-term functional sequalae and auditory impairment. Children with chronic adenoidal disease who fail to respond to traditional antibiotic therapy are usually candidates for surgery under general anaesthesia. It has been suggested that the ineffectiveness of antibiotic therapy in children with chronic adenoiditis i

Low recurrence of lung adenoid cystic carcinoma with radiotherapy and resection.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare cause of thoracic malignancy, and the prognosis may depend on the extent of surgical resection and adjuvant radiotherapy. Complete resection has low rates of local recurrence but is complicated by the involvement of central airways. Adjuvant radiotherapy is frequently recommended but unproven. METHODS: We describe the technicalities of radical resection and adjuvant radiotherapy using the primary endpoint of local recurrence and secondary endpoints of locoregional (mediastinal) recurrence and distant metastasis. Resections were classed as microsc

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of alveolar mucosa: A rare case report.

Adenoid cystic carcinomas are rare epithelial malignancies of salivary glands that show slow growth and local invasion with recurrences seen many years after diagnosis. Upto 50% of tumors occur in intraoral minor salivary glands usually in the hard palate. Tumors on the alveolar mucosa are extremely rare. We present a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma on the right alveolar mucosa in a 35 year old female. The case is been presented for its rarity.

A Comparative Study of Primary Adenoid Cystic and Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of Lung.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma (PMEC) and pulmonary adenoid cystic carcinoma (PACC) are the two major types of primary salivary gland-type (PSGT) lung cancers. The demographic profile, clinicopathological features, and predictors of survival as an overall group have not been described for PSGT cancers of lung. METHODS: In this study, we analyzed demographic, clinical, and survival data from 1,032 patients (546 PMEC and 486 PACC) who were diagnosed of PSGT lung cancer in the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database from 1973 to 2014. RESULTS: The PSGT constituted 0.

Biology of Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Tracheobronchial Tree and Principles of Management.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea is a rare tumor. The mainstay of treatment remains surgical resection, even in the presence of positive margins or metastatic disease. Perineural involvement commonly causes positive margins and should not deter from resection. Knowledge of releasing maneuvers is essential for surgical success. Long-term follow-up is required with patients presenting late and surviving with recurrent disease for years.

Comparison of adenoid size in lateral radiographic, pathologic, and endoscopic measurements.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media (OM) is a major health problem that usually results from adenoid hypertrophy. Diagnosis is based on symptoms like mouth breathing and imaging studies like lateral neck radiography (LNR). Adenoid-nasopharyngeal ratio (A/N ratio) is one of the most important and most widely used criteria in LNR study that could estimate the real size of adenoid gland measurements. However, there are huge controversies regarding LNR rules in the management of patients with OM. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine Adenoid Nasopharyngeal Ratio (A/N ratio) in children with otitis media

Expression and subcellular localisation of AID and APOBEC3 in adenoid and palatine tonsils.

Activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) and apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing catalytic polypeptide 3 (A3) family are cytidine deaminases that play critical roles in B-cell maturation, antiviral immunity and carcinogenesis. Adenoids and palatine tonsils are secondary lymphoid immune organs, in which AID and A3s are thought to have several physiological or pathological roles. However, the expression of AID or A3s in these organs has not been investigated. Therefore, we investigated the expression profiles of AID and A3s, using 67 samples of adenoids and palatine tonsils from patients, with reve…

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of Accessory Parotid Gland: A Case Report.

The accessory parotid gland is salivary gland tissue separated from the main gland at a variable distance. This gland is histologically similar to the main gland, but has a higher incidence of malignant neoplasms than the main gland. Regarding the various malignant neoplasms, studies have shown higher incidences of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, with less than 2% being adenoid cystic carcinoma. We present a case of swelling in the midcheek region that, after clinical examination, was diagnosed as a case of neoplasm of the accessory parotid gland. On the basis of auxiliary investigations including i

The effect of adenoid hypertrophy on maxillofacial development: an objective photographic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Deformity in the dental arc and facial skeleton by adenoid hypertrophy due to chronic mouth breathing is a well-known process. Most of the related studies have been based on cephalometric analyses. The aim of this study is to detect the presence of skeletal deformities on the soft tissue by analyzing distances and angles on photographs. METHODS: Ninety-seven children having between 25 and 100 % of adenoids, ages 4-12 years (48 boys, 49 girls), and 90 cases having 0-25 % adenoid tissue, ages 4-12 years (54 boys, 36 girls), were studied by clinical history, physical examination (inc…

[An association between adenoid hypertrophy and exstra-gastroesophageal reflux disease].

Adenoid hypertrophy is a disease that mostly occurs among children of 3-5 years old. It is caused by repeated inflammation and infection of nasopharynx and its adjoin parts, or the adenoid itself, which will finally leads to pathological hyperplasia of adenoid. With so much information we have acquired about this disease, its specific mechanism remains unknown. In recent years, some researches have indicated that adenoid hypertrophy may have something to do with extra-gastroesophageal reflux, in which pepsin plays a very important role, and pepsin will do a series of pathological damages to th
