Mental health outcomes and suicidality in hospitalized transgender adolescents: A propensity score-matched Cross-sectional analysis of the National inpatient sample 2016-2018.

Transgender adolescents have unique mental health needs. This demographic has increased rates of mood disorders, anxiety, and depression compared to their cisgender peers. Large-scale studies focused on mental health outcomes, including suicidality, in the transgender adolescent population remain unknown. This study tries to fill these gaps in the literature. Data for this study was taken from the National Inpatient Sample 2016-2018. Transgender adolescents were identified using the ICD-10 codes related to transsexualism diagnoses. These individuals were compared to adolescents without transse

Emergency department visits and hospital admissions for suicidal ideation, self-poisoning and self-harm among adolescents in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic had profound effects on the mental wellbeing of adolescents. We sought to evaluate pandemic-related changes in health care use for suicidal ideation, self-poisoning and self-harm. METHODS: We obtained data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information on emergency department visits and hospital admissions from April 2015 to March 2022 among adolescents aged 10-18 years in Canada. We calculated the quarterly percentage of emergency department visits and hospital admissions for a composite outcome comprising suicidal ideation, self-poisoning and self-harm

From primary care to hospitalization: clinical warning signs of severe dengue fever in children and adolescents during an outbreak in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

We analyzed factors associated with severe cases of dengue in children and adolescents hospitalized during the 2007/2008 epidemic in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is a retrospective case-control study that covers 88 cases of severe dengue in patients admitted to four tertiary care children's hospitals. Controls consisted of 22 children with non-severe dengue living in the same neighborhood as the patients with severe dengue. Differences in prevalence of the clinical signs - abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, drowsiness or irritability - emerged on the third day after the onset of symptoms, i

Cross-cultural adaptation and hospital-based validation of Sinhala and Tamil versions of the AIIMS-modified INCLEN epilepsy screening questionnaire in Sri Lankan children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Early recognition of childhood epilepsy remains challenging in settings with limited access to specialist services. Culturally and linguistically adapted screening tools may facilitate earlier identification of children requiring further diagnostic assessment. This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and test-retest reliability of Sinhala and Tamil versions of the AIIMS-modified INCLEN epilepsy screening questionnaire in Sri Lankan children and adolescents aged 1 month to 18 years. METHODS: A hospital-based, two-gate diagnostic accuracy

Changes in physical activity behaviors and influencing factors among children and adolescents with heart disease after hospital discharge: a 3-month follow-up study.

UNLABELLED: Regular physical activity is essential for the rehabilitation and long-term recovery of children and adolescents with heart disease. Many studies have shown that low levels of physical activity are associated with poor health outcomes. There is a lack of longitudinal research on the dynamic changes in physical activity and their influencing factors in children and adolescents with heart disease following hospital discharge after cardiac surgery or conservative management. Therefore, this study aimed to compare physical activity levels in children and adolescents with heart disease

The youngest are hit hardest: The influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the hospitalization rate for children, adolescents, and young adults with anorexia nervosa in a large German representative sample.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the mental health of children and adolescents. Young people at risk for anorexia nervosa (AN) have been especially shown to be affected. There are no studies that have investigated the respective proportions of hospitalized children, adolescents, and young adults separately as well as of both sexes during the COVID-19 crisis. METHODS: This study is based on the administrative data of the largest German statutory health insurance. All children (0-14 years) and adolescents (15-19 years) with a discharge diagnosis of typical and atypical AN

Congenital Etiology Is an Independent Risk Factor for Complications in Adolescents Undergoing Corrective Scoliosis Surgery: Comparison of In-hospital Comorbidities Using Nationwide KID's Inpatient Database.

BACKGROUND: Congenital scoliosis (CS) is associated with more rigid, complex deformities relative to adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) which theoretically increases surgical complications. Despite extensive literature studying AIS patients, few studies have been performed on CS patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate complications associated with spinal fusions for CS and AIS. METHODS: A retrospective review of the Kid's Inpatient Database (KID) years 2000 to 2009 was performed. Inclusion: patients under 20 years with ICD-9 diagnosis codes for idiopathic scoliosis (IS-without

Cost analysis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis surgery: early discharge decreases hospital costs much less than intraoperative variables under the control of the surgeon.

BACKGROUND: Spinal fusion surgery for the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is increasing. Health systems and surgeons are decreasing hospital length of stay (LOS) to decrease costs. The purpose of this study was to review the contribution of an accelerated discharge protocol on the total cost of a single episode of care related to the surgical treatment of AIS at a single institution. METHODS: A retrospective cost analysis was performed over an 18-month period, from January 2014 through June 2015, before and after the institution of an accelerated discharge program. Patients

The Risk of Hospital Admission for an Acute-Onset Psychiatric Disorder in Adolescents and Adults Treated with Isotretinoin: A French, Nationwide, Population-Based, Case-Time-Control Study.

INTRODUCTION: Oral isotretinoin is the only effective treatment for severe acne without an alternative. Isotretinoin has been linked to the occurrence of acute psychiatric disorders outside suicidal behaviors. There are few large-scale epidemiological studies in this area, and the putative associations are unclear. Our objective was to determine whether adolescents and young adults have an elevated risk of acute-onset psychiatric disorder requiring hospital treatment within 2 months of starting isotretinoin treatment. METHODS: Our data source was the French national health insurance database

The effect of late presentation on HIV related mortality among adolescents in public hospitals of north showa zone Oromiya, Ethiopia; 2022: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Late human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnosis is the most prominent cause of HIV/AIDS-related mortality and also increases the risk of transmission and spread of the disease in society. Adolescents are the most vulnerable population's age group for HIV infection in several settings, but expanding access to early HIV testing remains a challenge. Consequently, a significant proportion of adolescents are still dying of HIV-related causes, and the current study aimed at assessing the effect of late presentation on HIV-related mortality among adolescents living with HIV. METHODS: A

Prevalence and Clinical Impact of Viral and Bacterial Coinfections in Hospitalized Children and Adolescents Aged under 18 Years with COVID-19 during the Omicron Wave in Russia.

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered respiratory infection patterns in pediatric populations. The emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant and relaxation of public health measures have increased the likelihood of coinfections. Previous studies show conflicting results regarding the impact of viral and bacterial coinfections with SARS-CoV-2 on severity of pediatric disease. This study investigated the prevalence and clinical impact of coinfections among children hospitalized with COVID-19 during the Omicron wave. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 574 hospitalized patients aged under 18

Mortality in children and adolescents following presentation to hospital after non-fatal self-harm in the Multicentre Study of Self-harm: a prospective observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm and suicide in children and adolescents are growing problems, and self-harm is associated with a significant risk of subsequent death, particularly suicide. Long-term follow-up studies are necessary to examine the extent and nature of this association. METHODS: For this prospective observational cohort study, we used data from the Multicentre Study of Self-harm in England for all individuals aged 10-18 years who presented to the emergency department of five study hospitals in Oxford, Manchester, and Derby after non-fatal self-harm between Jan 1, 2000, and Dec 31, 2013.
