The Independent Role of Body Mass Index (BMI) and Severity of Depressive Symptoms on Biological Changes of Women Affected by Overweight/Obesity.

Background: Both obesity and depression are medical conditions associated with severe disability and biological abnormalities. Our aim was to study associations between Body Mass Index (BMI), depression and biological changes in women affected by overweight or obesity. Methods: Depressive symptoms were evaluated by the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) questionnaire in 200 women affected by overweight/obesity (mean age of the sample 52.7 ± 12.9 years, BMI 33.8 ± 5.5 kg/m2). A blood sample was obtained for evaluation of biochemical (oxytocin and vitamin D), inflammatory and epigenetic (meth

Xanthoceraside Could Ameliorate Alzheimer's Disease Symptoms of Rats by Affecting the Gut Microbiota Composition and Modulating the Endogenous Metabolite Levels.

Xanthoceraside (XAN) is a natural-derived compound with anti-Alzheimer activity from the husks of Xanthoceras sorbifolia. Although its therapeutic effect had been confirmed in previous studies, the mechanism was still unclear due to its poor solubility and low permeability. In this study, the pharmacological effect of XAN on Alzheimer's disease (AD) was confirmed by behavior experiments and H&E staining observation. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiment also replicated the therapeutic effects, which indicates the potential targets of XAN on gut microbiota. The sequencing of 16S rRN

PTSD symptom profiles among Louisiana women affected by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill: A latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: Few prior studies have investigated the latent class structure of PTSD using DSM-5 symptoms. METHODS: To describe latent PTSD profiles among women who resided in Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (DHOS)-affected coastal Louisiana communities, we used data from women enrolled in The Women and Their Children's Health (WaTCH) Study. Latent profile analysis was performed on the 20-item PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) and model fit statistics for 2-class through 6-class solutions were compared. The pseudo-class draws method was employed on the best class solution to compare key covariates (

Transdiagnostic assessment of repetitive negative thinking and responses to positive affect: Structure and predictive utility for depression, anxiety, and mania symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a cognitive process that is repetitive, passive, relatively uncontrollable, and focused on negative content, and is elevated in emotional disorders including depression and anxiety disorders. Repetitive positive thinking is associated with bipolar disorder symptoms. The unique contributions of positive versus negative repetitive thinking to emotional symptoms are unknown. The first aim of this study was to use confirmatory factor analyses to evaluate the psychometrics of two transdiagnostic measures of RNT, the Repetitive Thinking Questionnaire

Deep white matter hyperintensities affect verbal memory independent of PTSD symptoms in veterans with mild traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Although white matter hyperintensity (WMH) pathology has been observed in the context of traumatic brain injury (TBI), the contribution of this type of macrostructural damage to cognitive and/or post-concussive symptomatology (PCS) remains unclear. METHODS: Sixty-eight Veterans (mTBI = 46, Military Controls [MCs] = 22) with and without history of mild TBI (mTBI) underwent structural MRI and comprehensive cognitive and psychiatric assessment. WMH volume was identified as deep (DWMH) or periventricular (PVWMH) on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images. RESULTS: Group ana

Affective lability predicts decreased habituation in posttraumatic stress symptom responding during a single laboratory session of imaginal exposure.

Affective lability, or the instability of emotional states, is associated with heightened levels of trauma-related emotional responding and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, the impact of affective lability, specifically on habituation to idiographic trauma cues, has yet to be examined among trauma-exposed individuals. The current study examined differential response trajectories to trauma-related imaginal exposure as a function of affective lability. Specifically, 72 women with a history of sexual victimization participated in a laboratory-based study involving a single

Parental broader autism subphenotypes in ASD affected families: relationship to gender, child's symptoms, SSRI treatment, and platelet serotonin.

Relationships between parental broader autism phenotype (BAP) scores, gender, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) treatment, serotonin (5HT) levels, and the child's symptoms were investigated in a family study of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The Broader Autism Phenotype Questionnaire (BAPQ) was used to measure the BAP of 275 parents. Fathers not taking SSRIs (F-SSRI; n = 115) scored significantly higher on BAP Total and Aloof subscales compared to mothers not receiving treatment (M-SSRI; n = 136.) However, mothers taking SSRIs (M + SSRI; n = 19) scored higher than those not taking

The role of workload and driver coping styles in predicting bus drivers' need for recovery, positive and negative affect, and physical symptoms.

A survey was conducted on a sample of 159 Australian bus drivers to determine the extent to which workload and self-reported driver coping styles predicted their subjective health status. The model that was proposed incorporated the hours spent driving as a measure of workload, both adaptive and maladaptive driver coping styles, and self-report measures of need for recovery (i.e., fatigue), positive and negative affect (PA and NA), and physical symptoms. The results of hierarchical regression analyses revealed that the workload was a significant predictor of drivers' need for recovery, but not

Ebastine improves nasal symptoms and airflow and affects response to decongestion test in patients with persistent allergic rhinitis: a pilot study.

Nasal obstruction is the main symptom in patients with allergic rhinitis and it may be measured by rhinomanometry. Moreover, a decongestion test evaluates its reversibility. Some new antihistamines have been shown capable of improving this symptom. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate nasal symptoms, nasal airflow, and the response to decongestion tests in patients with persistent allergic rhinitis (PER), before and after treatment with ebastine. Twenty patients with PER were evaluated, 15 male and 5 female patients (mean age, 28.2 +/- 6.7 years). All of the patients received ebastine (

Long-term outcome of major psychoses. I. Schizophrenia and affective disorders compared with psychiatrically symptom-free surgical conditions.

We conducted a 30- to 40-year field follow-up of 685 patients with schizophrenia, affective disorders, and nonpsychiatric conditions. Long-term outcome was analyzed in terms of the patients' marital, residential, occupational, and psychiatric status. On the whole, psychiatric patients showed a significantly poorer outcome than the surgical controls. On the basis of long-term outcome, schizophrenia, and affective disorders, selected according to the specified research criteria, were significantly different: schizophrenia definitely showed poorer outcome than affective disorders. However, no sig

Examination on Factors Affecting Symptom Change after Drug Withdrawal in Patients with Mild Erosive Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Undergoing Symptom-Controlled Maintenance Therapy with Acid-Secretion Inhibition Drugs.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) on maintenance therapy with acid-suppressive drugs, it is not clear what background factors allow patients to discontinue the drugs. The aims of this study were to examine the relationship of the changes in the frequency and severity of gastrointestinal symptoms after discontinuation of acid-secretion inhibitors for erosive GERD (eGERD) with possible patient background factors and to identify factors that influence these changes. METHODS: This is a multicenter, open-label, interventional, exploratory study. eGERD patients w

Synergising latent profile analysis and network analysis to elucidate the relationships among emotion dysregulation, post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociation, psychosis, and affective symptoms in individuals with trauma and severe mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Trauma exposure and emotion dysregulation are transdiagnostic risk factors for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and severe mental disorders (e.g., depression, and schizophrenia spectrum disorders). The present study elucidated the latent profiles and interrelationships between emotion dysregulation and psychopathology (PTSD, dissociation, psychosis, and affective symptoms) in a trauma-exposed severe mental illness population. METHODS: We recruited a large sample of trauma-exposed outpatients with mood disorders and schizophrenia spectrum disorders in Singapore (N = 461; M age…

Somatoform dissociation and posttraumatic stress syndrome - two sides of the same medal? A comparison of symptom profiles, trauma history and altered affect regulation between patients with functional neurological symptoms and patients with PTSD.

BACKGROUND: History of traumatic experience is common in dissociative disorder (DD), and similarity of symptoms and characteristics between DD and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) encouraged to consider DD as trauma-related disorder. However, conceptualization of DD as a trauma-related syndrome would critically affect diagnosis and treatment strategies. The present study addressed overlap and disparity of DD and PTSD by directly comparing correspondence of symptoms, adverse/traumatic experience, and altered affect regulation between patients diagnosed with dissociative disorder (characteri

The association between positive affect and depressive symptoms in individuals with diagnosed or probable major depressive disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A number of theories propose that positive affect is negatively associated with depressive symptoms, but this claim has only been examined in meta-analyses of non-clinical samples and it remains unclear whether the association holds in clinical populations. OBJECTIVE: To obtain evidence-based estimates of the cross-sectional and prospective associations between positive affect and depression severity measures in individuals with clinical depression by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: We performed a systematic search on PsychINFO, MEDLINE, and Google Scho

Depressive symptom domains exert different effects on proinflammatory cytokines and inhibitory control function among patients with major affective disorders.

BACKGROUND: Studies have demonstrated the shared and distinct etiologies of different depressive symptom domains. However, less is known about the effects of the three depressive symptom domains, namely the dysphoria, retardation, and vegetative domains, on inhibitory control function and proinflammatory cytokine profiles. METHODS: Our study enrolled 327 adolescent and adult patients with major affective disorders, namely bipolar disorder (n = 94) and major depressive disorder (n = 233). The three-depressive-symptom-domain model of the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale was used in the
