Trigeminal sensory innervation to the tongue and pharynx was investigated in the cat, using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as a retrograde tracer. Following HRP application to the tongue, cells were labeled primarily in the posterolateral portion of the trigeminal ganglion. The pharynx was divided according to classical methodology into three regions: the epipharynx (nasopharynx), mesopharynx (oropharynx), and hypopharynx. When HRP was applied to the epipharynx and mesopharynx, HRP-labeled cells were found in the anteromedial and posterolateral portions of the trigeminal nerve, respectively. Whe

A population of large (A beta) afferents is known to have endings in the wall of the femoral-saphenous vein. These afferents project to the lower lumbar spinal cord. The purpose of the present study was to identify, localize, and characterize spinal neurons that receive inputs from such afferents. Responses of 50 neurons in the L6 spinal cord segment of decerebrate-spinal cats or intact cats anesthetized using alpha-chloralose were recorded following electrical stimulation of these afferents. Observations were also made on the convergence of muscle and cutaneous afferent inputs onto neurons dr

Spino-olivary projections from segments C1 and C2 were examined in 17 cats using autoradiographic methods and in nine cats using the method of retrograde horseradish peroxidase (HRP) transport. Injections of 3H-leucine at the junction of the C1-C2 segments produced anterograde terminal labelling in two regions of the contralateral inferior olive, one in the rostromedial half of the dorsal accessory olive (DAO), the other in the caudal half of the medial accessory olive (MAO). Projections to the rostromedial DAO were best demonstrated when tracer labelled the ventromedial part of the dorsal hor

Unmyelinated afferent fibres are the most numerous of the whole afferent component. Their function in nociception is now well established. However some recent data allow to think that their function is much more complex. Cutaneous unmyelinated afferences are evaluated in controls and in 3 groups of patients (painful neuropathies, painless neuropathies with hypesthesia, diabetic neuropathies). Amyelinic myelinic ratio is not in accordance with the gate control theory. Muscular afferent fibres are studied, especially the lateral gastrocnemius soleus nerve of cat. Their predominance is obvious. O

Electron microscopic study and quantitative analysis of the visual cortex synapses in 14, 30 and 60-day-old rats were performed after bilateral enucleation of newly-forn rats. A great amount of synapses of other functional systems was shown to be functioning in the area striata in addition to the synapses formed by specific visual afferents. Alterations in the synapses of the area striata of blind rats are developing gradually, achieving the greatest pronouncement in 60-day-old rats. These changes develop according to the type of atrophic process in connection with dysfunction. The atrophic al

A 55-year-old patient was admitted for variceal treatment, a complication of chronic portal hypertension and liver cirrhosis. Imaging studies revealed prominent duodenal varices, the pancreaticoduodenal vein as its afferent pathway, a drainer vessel into the inferior vena cava, and a paraumbilical vein. We successfully performed complete obliteration of the varix, including its afferent and efferent vessels, via the paraumbilical vein approach.

KEY POINTS: Functional disorders (i.e. interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome) are associated with hyperexcitability of afferent nerves innervating the urinary tract and the bowel, respectively. Various non-5-HT3 receptor mRNA transcripts are expressed in mouse urothelium and exert functional responses to 5-HT. Whilst 5-HT3 receptors were not detected in mouse urothelium, 5-HT3 receptors expressed on bladder sensory neurons plays a role in bladder afferent excitability both under normal conditions and in a mouse model of chronic visceral hypersensitivity. Previous studies using the femoral nerve model in both mice and rats have shown that regenerating motor axons prefer to reinnervate the terminal nerve branch to muscle versus a terminal nerve branch to skin, a process that has been termed preferential motor reinnervation (PMR). If end organ contact with muscle and skin is prevented, this preferential motor reinnervation still occurs in the rat. To better understand the process of preferential motor reinnervation in the mouse, we examined motor neuron reinnervation of muscle and cutaneous pathways without any end organ contact as well as with o

The acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity of the rat hippocampus and fascia dentata depends on an intact septohippocampal connection, and histochemical staining for AChE is commonly used to monitor the distribution of the cholinergic septohippocampal projection. It is also characteristic that the laminae of low or moderate to dense AChE staining in the hippocampus and fascia dentata coincide with the terminal fields of the major non-cholinergic, afferent pathways. While studying lesion-induced collateral sprouting and aberrant axonal growth of these pathways we observed that the AChE staining p…

Processing of sound in the cochlea involves both afferent and efferent innervation. The Na,K-ATPase (NKA) is essential for cells that maintain hyperpolarized membrane potentials and sodium and potassium concentration gradients. Heterogeneity of NKA subunit expression is one mechanism that tailors physiology to particular cellular demands. Therefore, to provide insight into molecular differences that distinguish the various innervation pathways in the cochlea, we performed a variety of double labeling experiments with antibodies against three of the alpha isoforms of the NKA (NKA alpha 1-3) and

Visceral pain is a central feature of chronic gastrointestinal disorders, yet the epithelial sensory mechanisms that shape afferent input before it enters pain-relevant neural pathways remain insufficiently integrated into current models. This review advances the concept that the intestinal epithelium is not only a barrier or endocrine interface, but also an active neuroepithelial regulatory layer positioned upstream of visceral sensory signaling. Neuropod-cell studies established that specialized epithelial cells can communicate rapidly with vagal neurons and preserve luminal stimulus identit

Sensitization of neuronal pathways and persistent afferent drive are major contributors to somatic and visceral pain. However, the underlying mechanisms that govern whether afferent signaling will give rise to sensitization and pain are not fully understood. In the present report, we investigated the contribution of acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) to bladder nociception in a model of chemical cystitis induced by cyclophosphamide (CYP). We found that the administration of CYP to mice lacking ASIC3, a subunit primarily expressed in sensory neurons, generates pelvic allodynia at a time point at

Invasive surgery induces a combination of local response to tissue injury and generalized activation of systemic metabolic and hormonal pathways via afferent nerve pathways and the central nervous system. The local inflammatory responses and the parallel neurohumoral responses are not isolated but linked through complex signaling networks, some of which remain poorly understood. The magnitude of the response is broadly related to the site of injury (greater in regions with visceral pain afferents such as abdomen and thorax) and the extent of the trauma. The changes include alterations in metab

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear ablation causing sensory deafferentation (SD) of the cochlear nucleus triggers complex re-arrangements in the cellular and molecular communication networks of the adult mammalian central auditory system. Participation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in these processes is not well understood.
METHODS: We investigated consequences of unilateral SD for the expression and distribution of the chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans, neurocan (Ncan) and aggrecan (Agg), alongside various plasticity markers in the auditory brainstem of the adult rat using immunohistochemical techni

The oculomotor accessory nucleus, often referred to as the Edinger-Westphal nucleus [EW], was first identified in the 17th century. Although its most well known function is the control of pupil diameter, some controversy has arisen regarding the exact location of these preganglionic neurons. Currently, the EW is thought to consist of two different parts. The first part [termed the preganglionic EW-EWpg], which controls lens accommodation, choroidal blood flow and pupillary constriction, primarily consists of cholinergic cells that project to the ciliary ganglion. The second part [termed the ce

It is well known that ovarian function is regulated by hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian hormones. However, although several histological studies have described the autonomic innervation of the ovary, the involvement of these autonomic nerves in ovarian function is unclear. Recently, it has been shown that both the superior ovarian nerve (SON) and the ovarian nerve plexus (ONP) induce vasoconstrictor activity by activation of alpha 1-adrenoceptors, whereas the SON, but not the ONP, inhibits ovarian estradiol secretion by activation of alpha 2-adrenoceptors. Furthermore, reflex activation of these
