Biomarkers of periodontitis and inflammation in ischemic stroke: A case-control study.

Periodontitis is a common infectious disease associated with increased risk for ischemic stroke though presently unclear mechanisms. In a case-control study, we investigated salivary levels of four periodontal pathogens, as well as systemic and local inflammatory markers. The population comprised 98 patients with acute ischemic stroke (mean ± SD, 68.2 ± 9.7 yrs; 45.9% women) and 100 healthy controls (69.1 ± 5.2 yrs; 47.0% women). Patients were more often edentulous and had fewer teeth than controls (13.8 ± 10.8 versus 16.6 ± 10.1). After adjusting for stroke risk factors and number of teeth, c

Antibacterial activity of moxifloxacin on bacteria associated with periodontitis within a biofilm.

The activity of moxifloxacin was compared with ofloxacin and doxycycline against bacteria associated with periodontitis within a biofilm (single strain and mixed population) in vitro. MICs and minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) of moxifloxacin, ofloxacin and doxycyline were determined against single strains and mixed populations in a planktonic state. Single-species biofilms of two Porphyromonas gingivalis and two Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans strains and a multispecies biofilm consisting of 12 species were formed for 3 days. The minimal biofilm eradication concentrations (MBEC

Genome-wide association study of periodontal pathogen colonization.

Pathological shifts of the human microbiome are characteristic of many diseases, including chronic periodontitis. To date, there is limited evidence on host genetic risk loci associated with periodontal pathogen colonization. We conducted a genome-wide association (GWA) study among 1,020 white participants of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study, whose periodontal diagnosis ranged from healthy to severe chronic periodontitis, and for whom "checkerboard" DNA-DNA hybridization quantification of 8 periodontal pathogens was performed. We examined 3 traits: "high red" and "high orange" bac

Variables of host response in saliva of patients with periodontitis: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis is an infection that results from an imbalance between periodontopathic microorganisms and the local and systemic host defense. This study analyzed saliva samples of patients with periodontitis for several biomarkers of host response. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Saliva was collected from 13 patients with chronic periodontitis, seven patients with aggressive periodontitis, and 13 periodontally healthy control subjects. Diverse markers of host response representing innate and adaptive immune response as well as antioxidative variables were determined. RESULTS: Patients with

The Oral Microbiota: Implications in Mucosal Health and Systemic Disease-Crosstalk with Gut and Brain.

During the last ten years, the scientific community has increasingly acquired greater knowledge of the importance of oral microbiota, in general, for the physical condition of humans. Not only oral diseases, related to oral dysbiosis, are examined, but also several systemic inflammatory degenerative diseases induced by this condition. This narrative review aims to shed light on the communication mechanisms between the oral cavity and different mucosal compartments, and to explain how the changes in microorganisms may alter their balance, leading to disease. Many potential pathogenic bacteria c

Anti-Inflammatory Effects on Periodontal Tissue and Antibacterial Effects on Oral Bacteria of Chlorogenic Acid.

Objectives: Combining mechanical plaque control, the physical removal of oral biofilm, with chemical plaque control, the use of agents to inhibit biofilm formation, is effective in preventing periodontal disease. Chlorogenic acid (CGA) found in coffee beans has medicinal effects, such as anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Periodontal pathogens are difficult to reach in certain areas with traditional self-care tools, such as toothbrushes. Additionally, the viscous biofilm is difficult to remove using mechanical plaque control alone. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effic

Genetic evidence from Mendelian randomization strengthens the causality between oral microbiome and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Epidemiological studies have reported controversial links between the oral microbiome and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the causal relationship between the oral microbiome and COPD via Mendelian randomization (MR) and to explore the impact of genetic variation on the oral microbiome to develop more precise healthcare strategies. The latest genome-wide association study data on the oral microbiome and COPD from East Asian populations were extracted and used for the two-sample MR analysis. Integrated methods (including inverse variance w

Enhancing Professional Periodontal Therapy with a Novel PMA-Zeolite Application: A Clinical Study on Periodontal Outcomes and Microbiological Changes.

Periodontitis is a chronic, multifactorial inflammatory disease characterized by the progressive destruction of the periodontal supporting tissues, including alveolar bone, potentially resulting in tooth loss. Etiopathogenesis involves a dysbiotic shift in the subgingival microbiota where the presence of pathogenic species such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, and Treponema denticola has been documented. This disbalance is combined with an inadequate host immune response, often exacerbated by other systemic comorbidities including diabetes mellitus and cardio

A chlorogenic acid-chitosan complex bifunctional coating for improving osteogenesis differentiation and bactericidal properties of zirconia implants.

Poor osteogenesis caused by limited bioactivity and peri-implantitis caused by bacterial colonization are the main challenges affecting the use of zirconia-based materials in dental implants. Accordingly, the development of a surface treatment method with an antibacterial effect and that promotes osteogenesis without damage to cells is crucial for yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) implants. Herein, we have developed a functional surface modification strategy whereby a poly (ethylene imine)/hyaluronic acid /chitosan-chlorogenic acid (PEI/HA/CGA-CS) conjugate is deposited on a zirco

Gram-negative endocarditis: disease presentation, diagnosis and treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) cause between 1% and 10% of infective endocarditis (IE). Most episodes are caused by microorganisms of the Haemophilus spp., Aggregatibacter spp. Cardiobacterium spp., Eikenella spp., and Kingella spp (HACEK) group. The frequency of IE caused by non-HACEK (GNB-IE) has increased in recent years. Uncertainties persist regarding its best medical treatment and the appropriateness and timing of surgical treatment. In addition, there are new drugs with activity against multiresistant microorganisms, of which there is little experience in this disease. W

Alveolar Bone Osteoclast Profile in the Periodontitis Wistar Rats Model with the Snail Slime (Achatina Fulica) Application.

BACKGROUND: Bone damage is a result of periodontal disease that occurs due to changes in osteoclast and osteoblast activity in response to local inflammation. The bacteria Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans produces Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which can increase osteoclast activity. AIM: This study aimed to analyse the decrease in alveolar bone osteoclasts in periodontitis rats' model with the application of snail slime. METHODS: Wistar rats (27) with periodontitis divided into three groups, namely the control group (debridement), P1 group (debridement and application of oral snail slime) 3

Periodontal pathogens and clinical parameters in chronic periodontitis.

The use of next generation sequencing and bioinformatics has revealed the complexity and richness of the human oral microbiota. While some species are well known for their periodontal pathogenicity, the molecular-based approaches for bacterial identification have raised awareness about new putative periodontal pathogens. Although they are found increased in case of periodontitis, there is currently a lack of data on their interrelationship with the periodontal measures. We processed the sequencing data of the subgingival microbiota of 75 patients with hemochromatosis and chronic periodontitis

Chlamydia pneumoniae is present in the dental plaque of periodontitis patients and stimulates an inflammatory response in gingival epithelial cells.

Chlamydia pneumoniae is an airborne, Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacterium which causes human respiratory infections and has been associated with atherosclerosis. Because individuals with periodontitis are at greater risk for atherosclerosis as well as respiratory infections, we in-vestigated the role of C. pneumoniae in inflammation and periodontal dis-ease. We found that C. pneumoniae was more frequently found in subgingival dental plaque obtained from periodontally diseased sites of the mouth versus healthy sites. The known periodontal pathogens, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggre

Sustained Release of Minocycline From Minocycline-Calcium-Dextran Sulfate Complex Microparticles for Periodontitis Treatment.

It is important to address the periodontitis-associated bacteria in the residual subgingival plaque after scaling and root planing to successfully treat periodontitis. In this study, we explored the possibility of exploiting the ion pairing/complexation of minocycline, Ca2+, and sulfate/sulfonate-bearing biopolymers to develop an intrapocket delivery system of minocycline as an adjunct to scaling and root planing. Minocycline-calcium-dextran sulfate complex microparticles were synthesized from minocycline, CaCl2, and dextran sulfate. They were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spe
