It has been suggested that hemisphere-damaged patients with calculation disorders can be subdivided into 3 groups: agraphia or alexia for numbers, spatial dyscalculia and anarithmetia. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the role played by visuospatial disorders and by anarithmetia in subjects with impaired calculation abilities. Seventy-six patients with focal hemispheric lesions and 26 normal controls with demonstrated ability to read and write numbers were given a written calculation task, the Token Test, the Crosses Test, a test of Constructional Apraxia and Raven's Progressiv…

PURPOSE: Despite appropriate speech-language therapy interventions and school and university accommodations, college and university students with developmental reading (specific reading learning disorder [SRLD]) and spelling (specific spelling learning disorder [SSLD]) difficulties continue to experience difficulties in adulthood, notably for reading fluency, spelling to dictation, and reading comprehension. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a morphological and phonological awareness intervention on word recognition, spelling, and reading comprehension skills in university student

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between cognitive impairment and the performance of handwritten scripts presented as "letter-writing" to a close relative by patients with dementia Lewy bodies (DLB), as fluctuations of the symptoms phase, and in a matched group of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The degree of writing disability and personal, spatial, and temporal orientation was compared in these two groups.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Fourteen simple questions, designed in a form that could be utilized by any general practitioner in order to docume

We have developed a pen and writing tablet for use by subjects during fMRI scanning. The pen consists of two jacketed, multi-mode optical fibers routed to the tip of a hollowed-out ball-point pen. The pen has been further modified by addition of a plastic plate to maintain a perpendicular pen-tablet orientation. The tablet is simply a non-metallic frame holding a paper print of continuously varying color gradients. The optical fibers are routed out of the MRI bore to a light-tight box in an adjacent control room. Within the box, light from a high intensity LED is coupled into one of the fibers

The case series approach in cognitive neuropsychology provides a means to test theories that make quantitative predictions about associations between different components of the cognitive system [Schwartz, M. F., & Dell, G. S. (2010). Case series investigations in cognitive neuropsychology. Cognitive Neuropsychology, 27, 477-494]. However, even when the predicted association is borne out the study may include outliers-observations that deviate significantly from the rest of the data. These outliers may reveal individual cases whose cognitive impairments dissociate from other cases included in

A male presenting with benign partial epilepsy with rolandic spikes from the age of 7 years was evaluated at age 11 years for worsening of his epilepsy associated with a specific regression of graphomotor skills. A longitudinal study over nearly 2 years showed an improvement in handwriting to an almost normal level under modified antiepileptic therapy. A detailed analysis with a computer-monitored graphics table showed at first a rapid improvement of skills followed by protracted slower progress. We argue that the initial rapid recovery of skills was directly linked to the improvement of his e

We report a longitudinal neuropsychological investigation of a patient with slowly progressive pure dysgraphia. Cognitive analysis of writing errors suggested a selective impairment of the graphemic buffer. After about seven years, the patient developed an apraxia of speech. No other linguistic or generalized cognitive impairment occurred subsequently, so that, twelve years after the beginning of the disease, the patient showed complete independence in daily life and still remained professionally active. Functional neuroimaging revealed hypoperfusion confined to left fronto-temporal lobe. This

OBJECTIVES: The diagnosis of a specific developmental disorder of reading, writing and arithmetic can be made based upon individually applied standardized methods for testing scholastic achievement and IQ. To make the choice of suitable methods easier for the administrator of the test, a critical survey of German-language methods for assessing skills in reading, writing and arithmetic is presented.
METHODS: Test intention and psychometric properties for scholastic achievement are summarized. The methods are assessed with regard to their utility in the diagnosis of congenital alexia and dyscal

PURPOSE: Improving writing in people with aphasia could improve ability to communicate, reduce isolation and increase access to information. One area that has not been sufficiently explored is the effect of impairment based spelling therapies on functional writing. A multiple case study was conducted with eight participants with aphasia subsequent to stroke. This aimed to measure the effects of spelling therapy on functional writing and perception of disability.
METHOD: Participants engaged in 10 sessions of copy and recall spelling therapy. Outcome measures included spelling to dictation of

We describe the case of a 48-year-old left-handed woman with unilateral neglect from a brain infarction in the area of the right basal ganglia and temporo-parieto-occipital lobe. When a Kanji character was dictated to her, she wrote only the right side (tukuri) of the character. When copying a picture from the visual image of a left-right asymmetrical object, such as the side view of the dog, she drew the tail and a hind leg immediately but was unable to draw a picture of the dog from the left side. We asked her to imagine going around to the opposite side of the imaginary dog and to draw it f

We describe one patient with acquired dysgraphia who showed spelling errors (mainly deletions and substitutions), both for words and non-words, across all output modalities (oral and written spelling, and delayed copying). Spelling accuracy was not affected by lexical factors, but was a function of word length. The patient's performance in oral and written tasks suggests the hypothesis of selective damage to the Graphemic Buffer.

A case of pure dysgraphia is presented in which the patient could accurately copy letters which she could not write. The patient did not show any evidence of significant reading or speech impairment or any buccofacial or limb apraxia. Both oral and "block spelling" performance were intact. The writing impairment, which was bilateral, appeared to consist of a memory difficulty for the motor movements associated with letters. The dysgraphia was shown to be specific to letters as the patient was able to transcribe certain numbers and patterns which were similar to letters in their visuospatial co

Cranial MRI showed asymmetric, cortex-sparing white matter lesions that increased over a week in the left frontal, left parietal, and right parieto-occipital lobes. Akinetic mutism is characterized by profound apathy and a lack of verbal and motor output for action, despite preserved alertness. The condition usually follows bilateral damage to the medial frontal subcortical circuits. We report a 59-year-old right-handed woman who was admitted to the neurology ward with sudden-onset akinetic mutism. Her medical history included an ischemic stroke 3 years earlier, with residual anomia and mild agraphia but no motor dysfunction. On this admission, a cranial computed tomography scan disclosed an acute left superior cerebellar infarction embracing the vermis, …
