Depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder in pregnancies among Métis people in Alberta: a population-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Despite high stress from historical trauma, systemic discrimination, and limited access to culturally-safe healthcare, the perinatal mental health of the Métis, Canada's second-largest Indigenous group, remains poorly understood. We evaluated the prevalence and sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Métis pregnancies. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used population-based retrospective cohort data of all pregnancies resulting in live births (≥ 22 weeks' gestation) in Alberta, Canada, from 2006 to 2…

Clinical Outcomes and Virulence Factors of Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli (STEC) from Southern Alberta, Canada, from 2020 to 2022.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) can cause severe clinical disease in humans, particularly in young children. Recent advances have led to greater availability of sequencing technologies. We sought to use whole genome sequencing data to identify the presence or absence of known virulence factors in all clinical isolates submitted to our laboratory from Southern Alberta dated 2020-2022 and correlate these virulence factors with clinical outcomes obtained through chart review. Overall, the majority of HUS and hospitalizations were seen in patients with O157:H7 serotypes, and HUS case…

Prevalence and risk factor investigation of Campylobacter species in beef cattle feces from seven large commercial feedlots in Alberta, Canada.

This fecal prevalence study targeted cattle from 7 large (10,000 to > 40,000 head) commercial feedlots in Alberta as a means of establishing Campylobacter levels in cattle just prior to animals entering the food chain. Overall, 87% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 86-88] of 2776 fresh pen-floor fecal samples were culture positive for Campylobacter species, with prevalences ranging from 76% to 95% among the 7 feedlots. Campylobacter spp. prevalence was 88% (95% CI = 86-90) in the summer (n = 1376) and 86% (95% CI = 85-88) in the winter (n = 1400). In addition, 69% (95% CI = 66-71) of 1486 Campyl…

Indigenization, Personalization, and Intersections: A Qualitative Study to Identify Essential Components for Developing an Indigenous-Centered Dementia Care Model in Alberta.

Current models of dementia care often perpetuate the legacies of colonization, which highlights the need for a culturally congruent approach. This research describes the necessary components to co-develop a freely available Indigenous-centered dementia model of care in partnership with Indigenous individuals living with dementia, their families, and communities. To prioritize ethical and decolonial research approaches, sequential focus groups were used alongside Keeoukaywin (The Visiting Way)-an Indigenous methodology deeply rooted in Métis and Cree ways of knowing-guided by a group of advisor

Completion of multiple-dose travel vaccine series and the availability of pharmacist immunizers: A retrospective analysis of administrative data in Alberta, Canada.

Pharmacists in a number of countries are being trained in the administration of injections with the aim of improving access and adherence to vaccinations. However, little is known about population-level adherence to multiple-dose travel vaccines, and whether the availability of pharmacist immunizers is associated with adherence. Health administrative data from Alberta, Canada, from April 2008 to May 2017 identified adults dispensed at least one vaccine for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, or rabies. Individuals were coded as completers or non-completers of the vaccine series ba…

Prevalence Rate and Demographic and Clinical Correlates of Child Sexual Abuse Among New Psychiatric Outpatients in a City in Northern Alberta.

The prevalence rate for child sexual abuse among new psychiatric outpatients in Fort McMurray was 20.7%. With an odds ratio for sex of 3.30, female patients are about 3 times more likely to report a history of child sexual abuse compared with male patients when controlling for other factors. Similarly, patients with at most high school education and those with previous contact with psychiatric services were about 2 times more likely to report a history of child sexual abuse compared to the patients with college or university education or no previous contact with psychiatric services, respectiv

Outbreak in Alberta of community-acquired (USA300) methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in people with a history of drug use, homelessness or incarceration.

BACKGROUND: The USA300 strain of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) can cause severe infection and is increasingly recognized as a cause of community outbreaks. In 2004, an outbreak was identified in the Calgary Health Region (CHR). METHODS: MRSA isolates were identified with standard methods at a central regional laboratory and typed via pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Isolates were tested by PCR for mecA, Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), SCCmec, and spa genes. Cases were defined as such if a clinical isolate of the USA300 strain was noted bet

Systematic development of an artificial neural network model for real-time prediction of ground-level ozone in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Ground-level ozone is a secondary pollutant that has recently gained notoriety for its detrimental effects on human and vegetation health. In this paper, a systematic approach is applied to develop artificial neural network (ANN) models for ground-level ozone (O3) prediction in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, using ambient monitoring data for input. The intent of these models is to provide regulatory agencies with a tool for addressing data gaps in ambient monitoring information and predicting O3 events. The models are used to determine the meteorological conditions and precursors that most affect …

A serological survey of Leptospira interrogans serotype pomona in Alberta and Saskatchewan striped skunks and possible transmission between cattle and skunks.

The range of known occurrence of Leptospira interrogans serotype pomona is extended to Alberta in striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis); no evidence of L. sejroe was found. Reacting sera from skunks were confined to the southern portion of Alberta and adjacent Saskatchewan, although a number of reactors were found sufficiently further north in Saskatchewan suggesting that a different mode of infection may be functioning there. Of 95 skunk sera from near a dairy farm infected with serotype pomona 40% were reactors. Of 438 skunk sera from other areas only 5.7% were reactors; that difference was sug…
