Drinking and Obesity: Alcoholic Liver Disease/Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Interactions.

Alcohol and obesity are the main risk factors for alcoholic liver disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), respectively, and they frequently coexist. There are considerable synergistic interaction effects between hazardous alcohol use and obesity-associated metabolic abnormalities in the development and progression of fatty liver disease. Intermittent binge-drinking has been shown to promote steatohepatitis from obesity-related steatosis, and binge-drinking is associated with progression to cirrhosis even when average alcohol intake is within the currently used criteria for a NAFL

Alcohol drinking and head and neck cancer risk: the joint effect of intensity and duration.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is a well-established risk factor for head and neck cancer (HNC). This study aims to explore the effect of alcohol intensity and duration, as joint continuous exposures, on HNC risk. METHODS: Data from 26 case-control studies in the INHANCE Consortium were used, including never and current drinkers who drunk ≤10 drinks/day for ≤54 years (24234 controls, 4085 oral cavity, 3359 oropharyngeal, 983 hypopharyngeal and 3340 laryngeal cancers). The dose-response relationship between the risk and the joint exposure to drinking intensity and duration was investigated through bivari

Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment: The Association of Pretreatment Use and the Role of Drinking Goal.

BACKGROUND: In a recent study conducted in a family medicine setting, the medication acamprosate was found not to be efficacious in the treatment of alcohol dependence, but a drinking goal of abstinence was found to have positive effects on alcohol use outcomes. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to further understand which patients with an alcohol use disorder may be most successfully treated in a primary care setting. METHODS: The study was exploratory and used a trajectory-based approach based on data from the acamprosate treatment trial of 100 participants (recruited mostly by adv

Growth trajectories of alcohol information processing and associations with escalation of drinking in early adolescence.

This longitudinal study provided a comprehensive examination of age-related changes in alcohol outcome expectancies, subjective evaluation of alcohol outcomes, and automatic alcohol associations in early adolescence. A community sample (52% female, 75% White/non-Hispanic) was assessed annually for 3 years (mean age at the first assessment = 11.6 years). Results from growth modeling suggested that perceived likelihood of positive outcomes increased and that subjective evaluations of these outcomes were more positive with age. Perceived likelihood of negative outcomes declined with age. Automati

Do acamprosate or naltrexone have an effect on daily drinking by reducing craving for alcohol?

AIM: To explore the effect of acamprosate and naltrexone on craving and alcohol consumption in the treatment of alcohol dependence. DESIGN: A randomized, double-blind, single-dummy, placebo-controlled trial. SETTING: Three treatment centres in Sydney, Australia. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 169 alcohol-dependent subjects were given naltrexone (50 mg/day), acamprosate (1998 mg/day) or placebo for 12 weeks, in conjunction with manualized medication compliance therapy. INTERVENTION: During the course of the trial, participants kept a daily diary which included the number of standard drinks they c

Psychopathology associated with drinking and alcohol use disorders in the college and general adult populations.

This paper examines the associations between past-year drinking status and the prevalence of 15 different past-year anxiety, mood and personality disorders, using a large (n = 43,093) nationally representative sample of the U.S. population. The prevalence of these disorders and their associations with drinking are compared for college students 18-29 years of age, other youth 18-29 years of age, and adults 30 years of age and older. After adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and past-year tobacco and illicit drug use, only drinkers with alcohol dependence experienced an excess risk of

Clinical urinalysis of drugs and alcohol in instances of suspected surreptitious administration ("spiked drinks").

Many suspected victims of surreptitious drug and/or alcohol administration may present to hospitals or healthcare centres and never come to the attention of forensic or law enforcement professionals. Therefore, it is necessary to include clinical toxicological findings in order to assess the growing perception that instances have become more widespread within society. Between July 2002 and June 2004, 180 requests were received for toxicological analysis of individuals presenting to their GP or hospital following self-reported or suspected surreptitious drug administration (e.g. "spiked drink")

[Types of hearing disorders in drug addicts and individuals drinking non-consumable alcohols].

All over the world an increase in the number of subjects addicted to various chemical substances has been observed. The studies of their toxic effect on the hearing have been so far most frequently limited to acute intoxication or direct effect: there are no data concerning distant and persistent effects. The aim of the study was to determine the type of hearing loss in drug addicts and individuals drinking non-consumable alcohols, examined during the period of abstinence. A group of 210 subjects addicted to various substances was examined using acumetry test and tuning forks, as well as thres

Beer drinking accounts for most of the hazardous alcohol consumption reported in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Patterns and correlates of hazardous drinking, defined as occasions in which five or more drinks were consumed in a day, were compared for wine, beer and distilled spirits. METHOD: From a probability sample of the U.S. adult household population, 2,817 respondents who had consumed at least one drink in the previous year were selected for analysis. RESULTS: The results show that, in the U.S., beer accounts for the bulk of alcohol consumed by the heaviest drinkers. Beer also accounts for a disproportionate share of hazardous drinking. Logistic regression analyses revealed that drink

The sexual relationship of male alcoholics and their female partners during periods of drinking and abstinence.

The quality of the sexual relationship between alcoholic male veterans admitted to an alcohol treatment program and their stable nonalcoholic female partners was assessed in relation to time intervals of abstinence and drinking. Repeated measures analyses performed on the LoPiccolo Sexual History Form provided information on sexual problems associated with the desire, arousal and orgasm phases of the sexual response cycle and other kinds of information relevant to sexual functioning. Results indicate that the sexual relationship varies in relation to drinking or abstinence. Sexual intimacy app

Effect of hippocampal lesions produced by intracerebroventricular kainic acid on alcohol drinking in the rat.

An alcohol self-selection test was first given to adult male rats of either the Sprague-Dawley or Long-Evans strain in which the concentrati … eported previously. Since the hippocampus has been implicated recently in the mechanisms underlying alcohol drinking, our results suggest that a pathological lesion of this limbic-forebrain structure could influence the degree to which alcohol is self-administered in a free-choice situation.

Perceptions surpass reality: Self-reported alcohol-related communication on Instagram is more strongly related with frequency of alcohol consumption and binge drinking than actual alcohol-related communication.

Mounting research finds that sharing alcohol references on social media is related to higher levels of alcohol consumption. The present study aims to improve our understanding of potential biases when using self-report measures, to provide more insight in the differences between background and foreground alcohol references, and to examine different drinking patterns. We examined the Instagram profiles of 128 Belgian college students (Mage = 21.31, SD = 1.50; 64.8 % women) and compared how the observed number of pictures depicting alcohol in the background or in the foreground as well as self-r

Drinking to Cope or Coping to Drink? Behavioral Profiles of Stress Management and Alcohol Use Risk Among Medical Students: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Alcohol misuse among medical students is commonly attributed to academic stress, yet the specific role of coping mechanisms in this relationship has received limited attention. We investigated whether substance use coping, rather than stress exposure itself, drives alcohol use risk in Romanian medical students, and whether distinct coping-based subgroups can be identified through cluster analysis. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 244 medical students (mean age 21.95 ± 3.27 years; 67.2% female) at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova, Rom

Monitoring and Reporting of Alcohol Consumption in India: A Situational Analysis for Combating Underage Drinking.

Uniform reporting of health economics data for taxable lifestyle commodities such as alcohol would include sales as well as consumption mapping, which is a challenging task given a component of choice as well as of intensity. This is challenging, particularly for a country such as India, where states are socioculturally diverse and have independent alcohol sales policies, leading to varying levels of its consumption. There is also a gap in the description of risky behaviors of alcohol use, leading possibly to inadequate data collection and a subsequent reporting bias. Furthermore, there is a r

Alcohol's acute effects on emotion recognition and empathy in heavy-drinking young adults.

Alcohol intoxication can lead to both positive and negative social outcomes, and recent research suggests that alcohol-induced changes in emotion recognition and empathy may underlie these consequences. However, methodological limitations of prior studies make drawing firm conclusions difficult. This study addresses some of these limitations by investigating the acute effects of alcohol on emotion recognition and empathy in a large sample of young adults, using an intoxicating alcohol dose and more ecologically valid tasks. Participants (N = 156, mean age = 22.51 ± 2.16, 31.41% female, 72.44%

Alcohol binge drinking in early pregnancy and the effect on fetal growth: a cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol binge drinking is common in early pregnancy and is a well-established risk factor for subsequent child health. Yet, very few studies have investigated the effect on fetal growth. Furthermore, it has been speculated that the timing of binge drinking may be a determining factor for neonatal growth. The objective of this study was to assess the potential effect of binge drinking and different drinking patterns (timing and number of binge drinking episodes) in early pregnancy on fetal growth estimated by birthweight and birth length. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 1 March to 31

The motive to drink due to social anxiety and its relation to hazardous alcohol use.

Although studies on social anxiety and alcohol-related problems are numerous, the exact nature of the relationship remains unclear. In the present study, we investigate how the motive to drink due to social anxiety is associated with hazardous alcohol use over and above habitual alcohol use, social anxiety, and alcohol outcome expectancies. We also examine which factors define the motive to drink due to social anxiety and clarify the impact of the type of social situation. Drinking due to social anxiety, habitual alcohol use, and gender, but not social anxiety, were associated with hazardous a
