Sorbitol-based emulsifiers such as sorbitan sesquioleate (SSO) are commonly used in topical corticosteroids, topical antibiotics, topical antifungals, moisturizing creams and lotions, and topical retinoids. Contact dermatitis from sorbitol derivatives appears to be increasingly prevalent. Patch-testing with SSO can be useful in the work-up of patients with presumptive cosmetic allergic contact dermatitis. Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC) has been used for years as a fungicide and bactericide for wood and paint preservation without any reports of cutaneous side-effects. During the last few years, it has entered cosmetic products and is temporarily permitted in the EU Cosmetics Directive in a use concentration of 0.1%. We investigated the relationship between residence in the neighbourhood of an aluminium smelter and the prevalence of atopy in schoolchildren (7-13 years of age). Atopy was assessed in 556 of the 620 participants by a skin prick test with eight common aeroallergens. Airborne mold monitoring in three cities in Saudi Arabia has documented the presence of Cladosporium in high concentrations. The spore counts reached threshold levels for sensitization at Jeddah and Al-Khobar with prominent seasonal variations. We report the case of a 39-year-old asthmatic patient who developed acute rhinoconjunctivitis, Quincke's edema, and asthma after repeated exposure to a raccoon (Procyon lotor) which a friend kept at home. Skin prick and scratch tests with native raccoon hair and epithelium, as well as RAST, were clearly positive. Elimination of contact with the raccoon and avoiding the home of his friend led to a cessation of the patient's acute exacerbations.

One hundred and three bronchial asthma patients with a suspected allergic component developed 133 positive immediate asthmatic (bronchus-obstructive) responses (IARs) to bronchial challenge with allergen (BP).
