To improve the serodiagnosis of human toxocariasis, a sensitive and specific enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB-IgG) test was developed and evaluated using Toxocara canislarvae excretory-secretory antigens for detecting anti-Toxocara IgG antibodies. The EITB-IgG profile of toxocariasis was characterized by comparing 27 sera from patients with toxocariasis, 110 sera from healthy subjects and 186 sera from patients with other helminth diseases (ascariasis, ancylostomiasis, trichuriasis, enterobiasis, strongyloidiasis, hymenolepiasis, diphyllobothriasis, taeniasis, cysticercosis, hyda…

Ancylostomiasis is a fairly common small bowel parasite disease identified by capsule endoscopy (CE) for which a computer-aided clinical detection method has not been established. We sought to develop an artificial intelligence system with a convolutional neural network (CNN) to automatically detect hookworms in CE images. We trained a deep CNN system based on a YOLO-V4 (You Look Only Once-Version4) detector using 11236 CE images of hookworms. We assessed its performance by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and its sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy usi…

BACKGROUND Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is caused by nematode parasites of the hookworm family of Ancylostomatidae. Ancylostomiasis is a zoonosis found in cats and dogs, and humans are an accidental host. This report presents a case of CLM in an 8-year-old boy, which was due to the zoonotic transmission of Ancylostoma caninum from domestic dogs in an urban area of Vinces, Ecuador, and demonstrates how awareness and early diagnosis contributed to the timely treatment of CLM. CASE REPORT An 8-year-old boy from the urban area of Vinces city in the Los Ríos province of Ecuador presented with a se…

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of a pedagogical intervention on the learning of children and teenagers participating in a clinical research.
METHODS: Quantitative, quasi-experimental and longitudinal study, part of a group of studies conducted to test a vaccine against ancylostomiasis. Convenience sample with 133 students aged 10-17 years, of both sexes, from the school Escola Municipal de Maranhão (Southeastern Brazil), 2009. A structured questionnaire was used, which was administered before and after the intervention. The pedagogical device was the "Theater of the Oppressed". The depende…

During the course of transmission electron microscopic studies of adult Ancylostoma caninum removed from a dog, several Giardia trophozoites were found in sections of the buccal cavity, oesophagus and intestine of several hookworms. Although the protozoa appeared viable, this unusual finding probably represents accidental uptake by, rather than an established infection of, the hookworm. It is feasible, however, that the trophozoites might have survived and even multiplied in this aberrant site.
