Effects of prenatal triphenyl-tin exposure on the development of behavior and conditioned learning in rat pups.

Neurotoxic effects of the fungicide triphenyl-tin acetate were examined in pups of mothers treated perorally on day 7-15 of gestation. The gait and development of motor coordination did not differ from those of control animals, in spite of the high mortality rate of control pups during the nursing period. Spontaneous locomotor activity of treated pups at the age of 23 and 36 days was increased, however by the age of 90 days activity returned to control levels. Conditioned avoidance was acquired more rapidly, but was also extinguished sooner in animals born from, the nursed by poisoned mothers

Envenomations during pregnancy reported to the national poison data system, 2009-2018.

Envenomations during pregnancy have consequences affecting both maternal and fetal outcomes. U.S. poison center data on envenomations offers a comparative view of envenomations in pregnant and non-pregnant women. The National Poison Data System of the American Association of Poison Control Centers was searched for cases of envenomation during pregnancy between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2018 and compared with exposures to non-pregnant females of childbearing age. Odds ratios and descriptive statistics were used where appropriate. There were a total of 3,555 venomous animal exposures in p

Height and blood chemistry in adults with a history of developmental arsenic poisoning from contaminated milk powder.

BACKGROUND: Arsenic poisoning interferes with bone metabolism in laboratory animal studies, and human studies suggest lowered bone mass density at elevated exposures. As the long-term consequences of developmental arsenic toxicity are poorly known, we carried out a clinical pilot study of survivors of the mass arsenic poisoning of bottle-fed infants in Japan in 1955. OBJECTIVES: The purpose was to evaluate the association between developmental arsenic exposure and physical stature and routine blood chemistry reflecting major organ functions more than 50 years later. METHODS: The study sample

Advanced Electrocardiogram Analysis in the Amitriptyline-poisoned Pig Treated with Activated Charcoal Haemoperfusion.

Coated activated charcoal haemoperfusion (CAC-HP) does not reduce the plasma concentration in amitriptyline (AT)-poisoned pigs. The aim of this non-blinded, randomized, controlled animal trial was to determine if CAC-HP reduces the pathological ECG changes caused by AT poisoning. Fourteen female Danish Landrace pigs (mean weight 27.7 kg, range 20-35 kg (CAC-HP) and 24.4 kg, range 18-30 kg (control group, CG), n = 7 in each group) were included. After randomization, the pigs were anaesthetized and intravenously poisoned with AT. The intervention group underwent 4 hr of CAC-HP plus standard care

The effects of levamisole poisoning on the haematological and biochemical parameters in dogs.

This study was designed to evaluate possible organ and system disorders associated with experimentally induced levamisole poisoning in dogs. For this purpose, twelve clinically healthy dogs of different ages, sexes and breeds were used. They were divided into two equal groups (Group A and Group B) and given levamisole orally at a dose of 25 mg/kg of body weight daily for three days. The dogs in Group B were also injected with atropin sulphate (0.04 mg/kg of body weight) subcutaneously (sc) 1 hour after each administration of levamisole. Routine clinical examinations were made and some haematol

Effects of 4-dimethylaminophenol, Co2EDTA, or NaNO2 on cerebral blood flow and sinus blood homeostasis of dogs in connection with acute cyanide poisoning.

The effects of the cyanide antidotes DMAP, Co2EDTA, and NaNO2 on cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral blood gases were investigated in connection with acute poisoning of dogs by cyanide. The substances were injected intravenously. Local CBF as measured with thermocouples in the cingulum increased by 100-200% after a non-lethal dose of KCN (1 mg/kg) and by 50% after injection of NaNO2 (15 mg/kg), that oxidized some 20% of the total hemoglobin to ferrihemoglobin. Co2EDTA (10 mg/kg) induced a decrease in local CBF of 30% and in brain temperature of 0.5 degree C. The temperature diminished also

Injuries and envenomation by exotic pets in Hong Kong.

INTRODUCTION: Exotic pets are increasingly popular in Hong Kong and include fish, amphibians, reptiles, and arthropods. Some of these exotic animals are venomous and may cause injuries to and envenomation of their owners. The clinical experience of emergency physicians in the management of injuries and envenomation by these exotic animals is limited. We reviewed the clinical features and outcomes of injuries and envenomation by exotic pets recorded by the Hong Kong Poison Information Centre. METHODS: We retrospectively retrieved and reviewed cases of injuries and envenomation by exotic pets r

Occurrence and sequestration of toxins in food chains.

Animals may acquire toxicity by absorbing toxic compounds from their food, e.g. from plants or other animals. Sequestration and accumulation of toxins may provide protection from predators, which learn to avoid this prey because of unpleasant experiences such as bitter taste. This is a common phenomenon in marine as well as in terrestrial ecosystems. Moreover, toxins may enter food chains where they accumulate reaching high, often lethal concentrations. Palytoxin which had been primarily detected in marine zoanthids (Palythoa sp.), occurs also in a wide range of other animals, e.g. in sponges,

Pirfenidone Ameliorates Paraquat-Induced Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition via miR-9-8974-5p/RGS2 Axis.

Irreversible and extensive pulmonary fibrosis caused by paraquat (PQ) poisoning is the main cause of death induced by PQ poisoning in developing countries. Studies have confirmed that epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) contributes to the process of pulmonary interstitial fibrosis caused by PQ poisoning. Many studies have proved that a variety of miRNAs are involved in the occurrence and development of EMT. Through animal and cell experiments, we established the model of EMT on mouse lung and MLE-12 cell. We found that the expression of Regulator of G-protein signaling 2 (RGS2) was decreas

Review article: management of cyanide poisoning.

Cyanide poisoning is uncommon, but generates interest because of the presumed utility of an antidote immediately available in those areas with a high risk of cyanide exposure. As part of its regular review of guidelines, the Australian Resuscitation Council conducted a systematic review of the human evidence for the use of various proposed cyanide antidotes, and a narrative review of the relevant pharmacological and animal studies. There have been no relevant comparative or placebo-controlled human trials. Nine case series were identified. Treatment with hydroxocobalamin was reported in a tota

Literature Review of Florida Red Tide: Implications for Human Health Effects.

Florida red tides are a natural phenomenon caused by dense aggregations of single cell or several species of unicellular organisms. Patches of discolored water, dead or dying fish, and respiratory irritants in the air often characterize these algal blooms. In humans, two distinct clinical entities, depending on the route of exposure, are associated with exposure to the Florida red tide toxins (particularly the brevetoxins). With the ingestion of brevetoxin-contaminated shellfish, neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP) presents as a milder gastroenteritis with neurologic symptoms compared with ot

Phosphatic fertiliser poisoning of sheep: experimental studies.

The toxicity of serpentine phosphate and superphosphate for non-pregnant dry ewes, pregnant ewes and lactating ewes was investigated by oral dosing. An attempt was made to reproduce a natural episode of poisoning by exposing pregnant and lactating ewes to topdressed pasture. A total dose in the range of 1200 to 1800 g of serpentine phosphate was required to kill two ewes and it was concluded that natural episodes of poisoning with this material are unlikely. The toxic process was similar to that caused by superphosphate. The LD50 of superphosphate was estimated to be in the range of 5 to 6 g/k

Trials of the anticoagulant rodenticides bromadiolone and difenacoum against the house mouse (Mus musculus L.).

Laboratory and field trials were conducted to determine the efficacy of the anticoagulant rodenticide bromadiolone against the house mouse (Mus musculus). In laboratory feeding tests, family groups of warfarin-resistant mice maintained in pens and conditioned to feeding on plain foods were offered pinhead oatmeal bait containing bromadiolone at 0.005%. Overall mortality in replicated 21-day poison treatments was 55/58 or 94.8%. Six field trials were carried out, using the same poison bait, against mice infesting farm buildings. Treatment success, estimated from the results of census baitings c

Clinical and environmental aspects of arsenic toxicity.

Arsenic is widely distributed throughout the animal and plant kingdoms and our environment where sources can be natural or anthropogenic. Agricultural uses of arsenic have declined recently, but it still has well-defined roles in industry. Small amounts of arsenic are metabolized in a variety of ways and are largely rapidly methylated and excreted by man and animals. Poisoning can occur and may follow an acute or chronic course. Toxic manifestations in man occur at the cellular level and may appear in many organ systems. Specific effects can often be demonstrated in the skin and in the vascula

Proteasome inhibitors: poisons and remedies.

The proteasome inhibitor bortezomib has been approved as a cytostatic drug for the therapy of multiple myeloma, and is currently being tested in clinical trials for a variety of other malignancies. At the same time, a growing number of animal studies suggest that proteasome inhibitors may also prove to be valuable remedies for the treatment of non-tumorous diseases. In this review, we will revisit the current applications of proteasome inhibitors in clinical research according to the cellular effects of proteasome inhibitors as poisons, which induce apoptosis, or as remedies, which modulate ce

The protection of invertebrates, fish, and vascular plants against inorganic mercury poisoning by sulfur and selenium derivatives.

Protection of organisms against mercury (Hg) poisoning is most commonly associated with the antagonistic effects of selenium (Se)-compounds against mercury alkyls in higher animals. This study shows that there is no consistent difference among Periodic Group VIA derivatives including S(IV), S(II) organic, Se (IV), Se (II) organic, possibly Se VI, as well and Te (IV) in their ability to protect against mercury poisoning. The organisms used in assays were: Coleus explants (leaf abscission); turnip (germination); pea (growth inhibition and Hg uptake); a planarian (regeneration); the brineshrimp (

A Potential Antidote for Both Azide and Cyanide Poisonings.

There do not appear to be any established therapeutics for treating azide poisoning at this time, and presently available antidotes to cyanide poisoning are far from ideal, being particularly impractical for use if multiple victims present. The cobalt (II/III) complex of the Schiff-base ligand trans-[14]-diene (5,7,7,12,14,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-4,11-diene (CoN4[14]) is shown to act as an effective antidote to both azide and cyanide toxicity in mice. Groups of animals challenged with an LD40 dose of NaCN (100 µmol/kg i.p.) exhibited significantly faster recovery from kno

Suspected cyanide toxicity in cattle associated with ingestion of laurel - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cyanide is one of the most rapidly acting toxins affecting cattle, with poisoning typically occurring following ingestion of cyanogenic plants. Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus), is one such potentially toxic cyanogenic plant. This case report details fatalities in an Irish herd following the ingestion of laurel and aims to raise awareness of the potential risk that access to laurel hedges poses to farm animals. CASE PRESENTATION: Over a twelve-day period, the death occurred of 36 dairy-cross weanlings; the majority (22 weanlings) died over a two-day period. Two days following entry to
