Stress among seamen.

The origin and type of stress among seamen were investigated by means of interviews with three harbor physicians in Rotterdam. The main psychological problems encountered were loneliness, homesickness, and "burn-out" syndrome. The problems were primarily caused by long periods away from home, the decreased number of seamen per ship, and by increased automatization. Quantification of the prevalence and severity of these problems is necessary to elucidate preventive and therapeutic measures.

Development of agoraphobia after surviving cancer.

We present a case conference on a 32-year-old accountant who developed embryonal carcinoma of the testis, two months after the birth of a son with a missing leg. His cancer was successfully treated with surgery and chemotherapy. After 5 years, when he was told that he need not be closely followed by his physicians anymore because he had been cured of cancer, he developed agoraphobia with panic attacks. This interfered with his occupational and social adjustment. His phobia was treated successfully with pharmacotherapy, behavior therapy, and psychotherapy. We explore the psychologic impact of c

Emotional Awareness Predicts Specific Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Outcomes for Anxious Youth.

The current study examined emotional awareness as a predictor of differential outcomes for youth treated for an anxiety disorder. 37 youth ages 7-15 received either individual cognitive-behavioral therapy or family cognitive-behavioral therapy to treat generalized anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, and/or social phobia. Diagnoses were determined by independent evaluators, following semi-structured interviews (ADIS-IV-C/P) with youth and their parents. Self-report questionnaires, including the multidimensional anxiety scale for children and the emotion expressivity scale for childre

Antecedents to panic disorder in nonreferred adults.

OBJECTIVE: Previous work has shown that childhood anxiety disorders are unique antecedents for panic disorder. The current study examined both childhood and adult comorbid disorders as potential antecedent disorders to panic disorder in a large sample of nonreferred adults. METHODS: Subjects were 1018 adults with (N = 58) and without (N = 960) panic disorder who were derived from a sample originally ascertained through family studies of probands with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); data were obtained from 1988 to 1996. Classification and regression trees (CART) an

The core elements of neurosis: mixed anxiety-depression (cothymia) and personality disorder.

Although there has been great diagnostic activity within the conditions formally included under the general rubric of neurosis in the last 20 years, there is little evidence that the many new diagnoses (i.e., generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and dysthymic disorder) have helped clinicians and improved the health of those diagnosed. This is largely because of the extensive comorbidity between these disorders negates much of their attempted separation and it is argued that the core of neurosis is a mixed anxiety-depressive disorder, or cothymia, combined with

Impact of left-behind duration on depression and anxiety in rural adolescents from mountainous areas and the moderating role of community resilience post-earthquake.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents in the mountainous regions of western Sichuan, China, are frequently exposed to earthquake disasters and often experience prolonged separation from parents due to labor migration. Previous studies have shown that both earthquake exposure and left-behind experiences negatively impact adolescent mental health, but the moderating role of community resilience remains underexplored. METHODS: This study conducted a cross-sectional survey in 2023 among 541 rural adolescents (aged 12-18) affected by the 2022 Luding earthquake. Standardized instruments - the Kutcher Adolescen

[Psychopathological and comorbid disorders of incarcerated adolescents in Austria].

OBJECTIVE: Incarcerated adolescents show a high prevalence rate of psychopathology and comorbid psychiatric conditions. Child and adolescent psychiatrists working in the penal system are confronted with the need to provide care and to develop specific treatment plans. METHOD: The data gathered from incarcerated juveniles were analyzed with a special focus on gender-specific treatment aspects. The Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview for children and adolescents was used to assess psychopathology in detained juveniles in Austria. The final study sample consisted of 333 juveniles (58 g

The language of medically unexplained dyspnea.

BACKGROUND: Medically unexplained dyspnea (MUD) refers to a condition characterized by a sensation of dyspnea and is typically applied to patients presenting with anxiety and hyperventilation without cardiopulmonary explanations for their dyspnea. The diagnosis is difficult. We investigated whether descriptors of dyspnea and associated symptoms of MUD are differentially diagnostic. METHODS: A respiratory symptom checklist incorporating 61 spontaneously reported descriptors of dyspnea was administered to 96 patients with MUD and 195 patients with cardiopulmonary diseases. Symptom factors measu

Social anxiety among young adult drinkers: the role of perceived norms and drinking motives.

The aim of the study was to examine the separate and combined influence of perceived norms, negative reinforcement drinking motives, and social anxiety on alcohol outcomes. Participants (N = 250) completed measures of injunctive norms, social anxiety, drinking motives, alcohol use, and alcohol-related problems. Data collection occurred in 2010. When examined separately, motives emerged as a stronger predictor of alcohol outcomes over norms. When tested jointly, findings suggest that for drinkers higher in social anxiety, normative perceptions are relevant and to such a degree that norms actual

Temporal reorganization of maternal care during early life stress in mice.

Maternal separation is a widely used early-life stress (ELS) paradigm in rodents. Disrupted maternal care by separation of pups from the dam for several hours per day across neonatal and juvenile development has been found to alter hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function, molecular and circuit-level brain development and function, and behaviors associated with anxiety, depression, and cognition. However, dams have been found to temporarily increase their care towards pups upon reunion - typically associated with positive outcome measures - calling into question whether this increase in ca

Psychometrics of the screen for adult anxiety related disorders (SCAARED)- A new scale for the assessment of DSM-5 anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the psychometrics of the Screen for Adult Anxiety Related Disorders (SCAARED). METHODS: The SCAARED was adapted from … t sample (N=158). RESULTS: The SCAARED showed four factors: somatic/panic/agoraphobia, generalized anxiety, separation anxiety, and social anxiety. The total and each factor scores demonstrated good internal consistency (α=0.86-0.97) and good discriminant validity between anxiety and other disorders and within anxiety disorders for generalized and social anxiety. Beyond Anxiety: School Refusal as a Disrupted Individuation Process in Post-COVID Adolescents.

BackgroundThe post-COVID surge in school refusal has prompted a clinical response overwhelmingly focused on anxiety and its treatments. While this orientation is scientifically grounded, it remains partial: it fails to account for a dimension that successive lockdowns massively disrupted without the recent literature fully integrating it, namely the separation-individuation process (SIP) specific to adolescence.AimsThis article proposes a complementary and integrative reading of post-COVID school refusal, organized around three axes.ApproachFirst, lockdowns interrupted the environmental condit

[Developmental trajectories of anxiety disorder symptoms in adolescents: a five-year prospective community study].

BACKGROUND: The relatively recent adoption of modern statistical analysis methods, such as latent growth modelling (lgm), makes it possible to study differences in the individual trajectories of development over time. AIM: To examine prospectively the developmental trajectories of anxiety disorder symptoms in a large sample of adolescents (N = 1,318) from the general population over a period of five years. METHOD: The adolescents were divided into two cohorts: early adolescents (average age 12 at the first measurement) and middle adolescents (average age 16 at the first measurement). Age and

School phobia.

School phobia is a serious disorder affecting up to 5% of elementary and middle school children. Long-term consequences include academic failure, diminished peer relationships, parental conflict, and development of additional psychiatric disorders. Hiding behind such common physical symptoms as headaches, stomachaches, and fatigue, school phobia evades diagnosis with ease. Unraveling the problem of school phobia is challenging for the school nurse and is complicated by an overall lack of knowledge regarding the serious potential outcomes. The purpose of this article is to define school phobia,

Oxytocin and Anxiety Disorders.

In the present chapter, we review the literature focusing on oxytocin (OT)-centered research in anxiety spectrum conditions, comprising separation anxiety disorder, specific phobias, social anxiety disorder (SAD), panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and anxiety-related endophenotypes (e.g., trust behavior, behavioral inhibition, neuroticism, and state/trait anxiety). OT receptor gene (OXTR) polymorphisms have been implicated in gene-environment interactions with attachment style and childhood maltreatment and to influence clinical outcomes, including SAD intensity and limbic responsi

Evidence for the Discriminant Validity of the Revised Social Anhedonia Scale From Social Anxiety.

Social anhedonia and social anxiety are two constructs with similar behaviors including avoidance of and withdrawal from social situations. In three studies, the current research aimed to test whether social anhedonia could be discriminated from social anxiety using the most common measure of social anhedonia, the Revised Social Anhedonia Scale (RSAS). In Study 1, an item-level factor analysis of the RSAS found two factors: Social Apathy/Aversion and Social Withdrawal. In Study 2, this two-factor structure was confirmed in a separate sample. In Study 3, a model with social anhedonia and anxiet
