[Comparison of the status of binocular function in corrected mononuclear aphakia and pseudophakia].

The authors investigated in a group of 31 adults with unilateral aphakia the state of binocular functions and evaluated the differences between a group of patients corrected with contact lenses and a group with pseudophakia. The investigation revealed surprising (excellent) results as regards the restoration of satisfactory binocular vision in particular in pseudophakias (85%), somewhat poorer results with contact lenses (72%) which is favourable for the return of patients into practical life.

Secondary intraocular lens implantation vs epikeratophakia for the treatment of aphakia.

We analyzed retrospectively the results of 30 consecutive secondary intraocular lens implantations and 30 epikeratophakia procedures performed by one surgeon for adult aphakia. Specific indications for epikeratophakia were criteria that excluded patients as candidates for intraocular implants. Follow-up of all patients was at least six months. Preoperative and postoperative uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity and endothelial cell counts, as well as power predictability and complications rates, were compared. Preliminary results indicated that postoperative visual acuity, power predict…

A cost-effectiveness comparison of the intraocular lens and the contact lens in aphakia.

There is currently interest in the effectiveness and cost of the intraocular lens as compared with other methods of correcting aphakia following cataract extraction. We have undertaken a retrospective review of patients undergoing cataract surgery by the extracapsular method at Moorfields Eye Hospital during the period January 1982 to July 1983. From the total population we selected at random two groups of patients, having their aphakia corrected either by means of a contact lens or an intraocular implant. Patients under the age of 60 years and those with complicating illnesses were excluded f…

Localization of keratin in the cells of the cornea in aphakia and normal mouse embryos.

Abnormal lens morphogenesis in the aphakia mutant in the mouse often results in a club-shaped elongated 'lens' that remains attached to the surface epithelium by a persistent connecting stalk, which is partially solid and partially cystic. Usually, the cells are continuous with the surface epithelium of the cornea and also with the cuboidal cells lining the corneal inner surface. Immunofluorescence with keratin antiserum not only gave positive reactions with the corneal epithelial cells, but also with many cells of the lens stalk, including its cysts, and with islands of cells on the inside of…

Extended-wear contact lenses in patients with corneal grafts and aphakia.

Extended-wear contact lenses (EWCL) were fitted successfully on 61 aphakic eyes with penetrating corneal grafts. In two- to 32-months follow … The results indicate that EWCLs may be used safely by patients with penetrating corneal grafts and aphakia, particularly if there is no host corneal edema, scarring, or vascularization, if these are no synechias to the graft wound, and if the astigmatism is less than 3.0 diopters.

[Interaction of the mutant aphakia, fidget and ocular retardation genes in mice].

The phenogenetic analysis of the effects of aphakia (ak) gene and its interaction with the ocular retardation (or) and fidget (fi) genes suggests that the ak gene acts in the lens cells with the result of arresting lens fibre differentiation. In mice homozygous for ak, the lens failure leads to secondary retina defects, in particular, to formation of retinal folds. In ak/ak or/or mice, the lens and retina morphogenesis stops at the optic cup stage, the eye is strongly reduced in size and more affected, compared to the corresponding single homozygotes. Unlike ak/ak or/or, in the ak/ak fi/fi mic…

The validity of labeled parameters of aphakia-correcting soft contact lenses.

This study examines the validity of labeled parameters of aphakia-correcting soft contact lenses. The Nikon Projection Lensometer (NPL) and the Hydro-Vue Soft Lens Analyzer (HSLA) were used by two independent inspectors to measure 51 aphakia-correcting lenses. The contact lens power, diameter, and base curve were measured by each of the inspectors and compared to the labeled parameters. All parameter relations that were analyzed revealed that measurements made by the inspectors were not statistically different (p greater than 0.05) from each other and that their combined measurements were not …

Epikeratophakia: the surgical correction of aphakia. I. Lathing of corneal tissue.

Epikeratophakia is a newly developed form of refractive corneal surgery for the correction of hyperopia. In this procedure, a piece of donor corneal tissue is lathed to a specific dioptric power. The epithelial cells are removed from the recipient cornea, and the donor tissue is sutured to the front of the eye. The resulting change in corneal curvature provides the visual correction, as, for instance, in the correction of aphakia. We describe here the computational analysis used to lathe human donor corneal tissue for use as epikeratophakia grafts. With these equations, the precision of the ob…

Aniseikonia for near vision with unilateral aphakia corrected by intraocular lenses.

1. Our methods for calculation of aniseikonia for near vision allow one to determine it in every patient with an intraocular lens. 2. With an eye with an artificial lens there is a correlation between the amount of accommodation used by the phakic eye and aniseikonia changes subject to the distance from the object. Calculations for aniseikonia for near vision in 43 patients showed that with accommodation used by the normal eye aniseikonia was increased by 3.0% to 7.8% as compared with aniseikonia for distance. With accommodation of the phakic eye lacking, aniseikonia for near vision did not di
