Chromoblastomycosis due to Fonsecaea pedrosoi: an old wine in a rare bottle.

Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic subcutaneous mycosis commonly caused by Fonsecaea, Phialophora, and Cladophialophora spp. Out of these, Fonsecaea pedrosoi is the most common etiological agent, implicated in 70%-90% of the cases reported worldwide. The histopathological diagnosis of chromoblastomycosis is based on visualization of medlar or sclerotic bodies in the tissue. These sclerotic bodies divide by planar division. Rarely, budding is seen in these sclerotic bodies. As this entity can be confused with phaeohyphomycosis, it is important to be aware of such a presentation also. We report tw

Are plant pathogen populations adapted for encounter with their host? A case study of phenological synchrony between oak and an obligate fungal parasite along an altitudinal gradient.

Biotrophic fungal pathogens are expected to have adapted to their host plants for phenological synchrony, to optimize the possibility of contacts leading to infections. We investigated the patterns and causes of variation in phenological synchrony in the oak-powdery mildew pathosystem, a major disease in natural ecosystems. The study was carried out along an altitudinal gradient, representing a wide temperature range, in mature oak stands. Both sporulation (pathogen infective stage) and oak flushing (host susceptible stage) were delayed with increasing elevation, but with a significantly diffe

Successful treatment of Ochroconis gallopavum infection in an immunocompetent host.

Ochroconis gallopavum, a dematiaceous fungus, is a rare cause disease in immunocompromised patients and epidemic encephalitis in poultry. We report the first case of active O. gallopavum pulmonary infection in an immunocompetent host with rapid and complete response to oral antifungal therapy.

Rapid identification of Fonsecaea by duplex polymerase chain reaction in isolates from patients with chromoblastomycosis.

Fonsecaea pedrosoi is the most common etiologic agent of chromoblastomycosis. F. pedrosoi and other dematiaceous fungi are usually identified by morphologic studies. We have developed a duplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the ribosomal DNA for rapid and more specific identification of the genus Fonsecaea. DNA samples from 103 isolates of Fonsecaea species and other dematiaceous fungi were amplified by PCR using universal and specific primers targeting ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region of the ribosomal DNA. Universal primers were used for detection of non-Fonsecaea DNA. Fonsecaea-specific PCR

[Monascus purpureus: a new fungus of allergenic relevance].

Anaphylactic reactions to food containing allergens in the consumption or preparation of food are well known. However, allergy in the preparation of sausages have rarely been described. In the present study a 26-year-old butcher was investigated who had a severe anaphylactic reaction developing sneezing, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, generalised pruritus, followed by widespread urticaria, Quincke's oedema and dyspnoe after starting to prepare sausages containing red yield rice. Red yield rice is produced from polished and washed rice by means of the fungus Monascus purpureus. It was the first time

Periodic detection and disinfection maintenance of dental unit waterlines in dental simulation head model laboratories.

Dental simulation head model laboratories are crucial for clinical simulation training for stomatological students, yet the maintenance of t … l diversity analysis revealed Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota as the dominant bacterial phyla, with Ascomycota as the dominant fungal phylum. Potentially pathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia, Ralstonia, Mycobacterium, Legionella, Paenibacillus, Streptomyces, Acinetobacter, and Prevotella, as well as fungi like F …

Diversity of Culturable Fungi in Two-Phase Olive Mill Waste, a Preliminary Evaluation of Their Enzymatic Potential, and Two New Trichoderma Species.

This study investigates the diversity and provides a preliminary evaluation of the enzymatic potential of culturable fungi present in two-phase olive mill waste (TPOMW), a lignocellulose- and phenolic-rich agro-industrial by-product generated in large quantities in olive oil-producing countries. Ninety-four isolates, representing 31 species of the phyla Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Mucoromycota, were obtained and identified by using ITS, 28S, tef1-α, tub2, rpb2, act, and/or cal sequences. Among the identified taxa, two new Trichoderma species within the Harzianum clade, namely Trichoderma am…

Temporal and Workshop Heterogeneity of Microbial Communities with Physicochemical Properties and Flavor Substances During Stacked Fermentation of Sauce-Flavor Baijiu.

Even within the same round of stacked fermentation, variations among production workshops can significantly influence microbial communities … ed that the predominant genera in both workshops included Saccharomycetales, Thermomyces, Monascus, Ascomycota, Kroppenstedtia, Bacillus, and Virgibacillus. Differences in physicochemical factors during the fermentation process led to distinct microbial successions among workshops. Key drivers of dominant microbial community succession, such as glucose, star …

Analysis of fungal diversity in the feces of Arborophila rufipectus.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal fungal composition plays a crucial role in modulating host health, and thus is of great significance in the conservat … robiota of A. rufipectus and L. nycthemera were highly similar and mainly consisted of three phyla, Ascomycota (58.46%), Basidiomycota (28.80%), and Zygomycota (3.56%), which accounted for 90.82% of the fungal community in all the samples. Further, the predominant genera were Ascomycota_unclassified (12.24%), Fungi_unclassified (8.37%), Davidiella (5.18%), H …

Fungal microbiota in newborn infants with and without respiratory distress syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Pneumocytis jirovecii infection in preterm newborns has recently been associated with neonatal respiratory distress syndrome and … biota was carried out using molecular procedures in aspirated nasal samples at birth. RESULTS: The ascomycota phylum was identified in 89.7% of newborns, while the basidiomycota phylum was found in 33.3%. Cladosporium was the predominant genus in both term and preterm infants 38.4% vs. 73% without statistical differences. Candida sake and Pneumocystis jirov …
