Anterior cruciate injuries in the skeletally immature athlete: a review of treatment outcomes.

The documentation of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in the skeletally immature athlete has significantly increased over the past decade, primarily due to increased awareness of these injuries within this younger athletic population. The evaluation of these injuries are similar to that in the adult population. Diagnostic studies such as plain radiographs, as well as magnetic resonance imaging, can delineate the location of the ACL failure. Physical presentation most commonly includes an acute haemarthrosis and ligamentous insufficiency. Several studies have demonstrated that the diag

The relationship of injuries of the leg, foot, and ankle to proximal thigh strength in athletes.

Rehabilitation programs designed to restore leg, ankle, and foot function following injury frequently ignore the proximal muscles. During athletics, these knee, hip, and trunk muscles derive much of their functional power from the foot and ankle. They also serve to integrate distal segment motions into a total movement pattern such as jumping, running, or kicking. The linkage system, which is a theoretical concept, describes the normal biomechanical and physiological interactions between proximal and distal musculoskeletal structures. Immobilization or injury of distal segments interrupts the

Exploring Trends between Dance Experience, Athletic Participation, and Injury History.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dancers sustain substantial injury rates ranging from 0.62-5.6 injuries per 1000 dance exposure hours with 72% of these injuries attributed to overuse mechanisms. Highly technical activities like dance often require high training volumes incorporating deliberate practice from a young age which may contribute to these high percentages of overuse injuries. The purpose of this study was to determine trends between dance participation, athletic participation, and injury history. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. METHODS: Dancers over 18 years old with at least one yea

Endophenotype presentation of athletes with concussion contingent on sex and time since injury.

INTRODUCTION: Athletes with concussions experience heterogeneous symptoms and clinical trajectories. Subclassification provides diagnostic clarity that may improve prognostication and individualized treatments. METHODS: We hypothesized that endophenotypes of adolescent athletes with concussions differ based on sex and time since injury. Post-concussive testing was performed for athletes (n = 1385) in the North Texas Concussion Registry (ConTex) at four timepoints: acute [0-3 days post-injury (DPI)], subacute-early (4-7DPI), subacute-late (8-28DPI), and persistent (29+DPI). Six endophenotypes

The Natural History of Bone Stress Injuries in Athletes: From Inception to Resolution.

Bone stress injury (BSI) occurrence is common in athletic populations, resulting in high periods of time loss from sports participation. Minimising incidence and reducing severity presents a challenge for the prevention and clinical management of bone stress injuries (BSIs) for sports practitioners. An understanding of the aetiology and mechanisms for BSIs in athletic populations can assist with the design and implementation of prevention programmes. Application of established health frameworks allows practitioners to identify and manage the complex and dynamic interplay of factors that alter

Is Visual Reliance Increased in Athletes After ACL Injury? A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury often exhibit visual cognitive deficits during tasks that require neuromuscular control. In this paper, we present evidence of increased visual reliance after ACL injury during a range of clinically applicable cognitive-motor tasks. This information is essential to strengthen the scientific rationale for therapeutic interventions that target maladaptive neuroplasticity and may translate to improved return-to-sport (RTS) outcomes following ACL injury. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study are (1) to determine if visual rel

Lower Extremity Musculoskeletal Injuries After Concussion in Collegiate Student-Athletes.

BACKGROUND: An association has been identified between concussion and lower extremity musculoskeletal injury (LEMSKI) after return to sports participation. However, the collegiate student-athlete studies have relied on relatively small single-institution studies, which limits generalizability. PURPOSE: To assess odds of, and time to, LEMSKI after concussion in US collegiate athletes, using the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Injury Surveillance Program (ISP). STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. METHODS: Data from the NCAA ISP during the 2010-2011 through 2019-2020

Core Muscle Injury Producing Groin Pain in the Athlete: Diagnosis and Treatment.

Groin pain is a common cause of pain in the athlete and may be the result of a variety of causes. Musculoskeletal groin injuries are often associated with muscle strain, particularly the adductor and abdominal muscles, termed "core muscle injury" (CMI). Since the early 1960s, there have been a growing number of articles intending to identify, define, prevent, and treat this condition; to date, however, the lack of a universal definition and treatment approach has complicated the narrative around CMI. This article intends to review the recent literature surrounding CMI, identifying common defin

Effects of Body Posture and Different Exercise Intensity on Athletes' Limb Injury.

The purpose of this study was to solve the problem of the influence of body posture and different exercise intensity on athletes' limb injuries, to meet the needs of understanding athletes' injuries, and to make up for the lack of investigations on athletes' limb injuries; this also increases the chances of an athlete avoiding injury. Severe acute sports injuries of high-level gymnasts endanger the personal safety of athletes. Many movements in gymnastics are done in the air much higher than the ground, and there is no fulcrum when the athlete does the movements; this just can only maintain ba

Analysis of Injuries and Wellness in Blind Athletes during an International Football Competition.

Five-a-side football for blind people is the only adapted football modality present at the Paralympic games. Fa5 is a collaborative-opposition sport in which its participants play with no vision, which causes numerous impacts. At the London 2012 Paralympic Games, it was the sport with the highest incidence of sports injuries. The main objective of this work is to analyse the association between pain perception; spatio-temporal, mechanical, and metabolic workload with injuries; and wellness in players during an international Fa5 competition. The following variables, monitored during an Internat

Relationship Between Training Factors and Injuries in Stand-Up Paddleboarding Athletes.

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is an increasingly popular sport but, as in other sports, there is an injury ratio associated with practicing it. In other types of sport, some factors have been linked to the likelihood of suffering an injury, among which stretching, core training and resistance training may be considered the most significant. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to identify the training factors that could influence injuries suffered by participants in international SUP competitions. Ninety-seven questionnaires were collected from paddlers who participated in an internationa
