Prenatal and perinatal morbidity in children with Tourette syndrome and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Tourette syndrome (TS) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are frequently seen in combination, though the cause of comorbidity is uncertain. Low birth weight is a known risk factor for ADHD. The objective of the study was to assess the association between pre- and perinatal morbidity and the comorbid diagnosis of ADHD in children with TS. METHOD: A nested case-control study of children evaluated for TS at a subspecialty clinic was performed. Cases were defined as children with TS and ADHD; controls had TS without ADHD. Exposure to pre- and perinatal morbidity was as

Meta-analysis: treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children with comorbid tic disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The Food and Drug Administration currently requires the package inserts of most psychostimulant medications to list the presence of a tic disorder as a contraindication to their use. Approximately half of children with Tourette's syndrome experience comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We sought to determine the relative efficacy of different medications in treating ADHD and tic symptoms in children with both Tourette's syndrome and ADHD. METHOD: We conducted a PubMed search to identify all double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trials examining the effic

Sleep disturbances in prepubertal children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a home polysomnography study.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine sleep architecture and reported sleep problems in children with ADHD and normal controls, while considering the roles of pertinent moderating factors. DESIGN: Overnight sleep recordings were conducted in 15 children diagnosed with ADHD (DSM-IV) without comorbid psychiatric problems and in 23 healthy controls aged 7 to 11 years. Children were on no medication, in good health and did not consume products containing caffeine > or = 7 days prior to the polysomnography (PSG) study. PSG evaluation was performed at each child's home; children slept in their regular beds a

Actigraphic and parental reports of sleep difficulties in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVES: To describe actigraphically detected and parent-reported sleep problems in nonmedicated children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); to clarify whether or not comorbid oppositional defiant disorder contributes to sleep difficulties; and to compare objectively measured sleep with the parents' observations of sleep. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: A child and adolescent psychiatric department of a teaching hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred six children aged 5 to 11 years, including 45 with a diagnosis of ADHD, 64 with a diagnosis of other psychiatric diagn

Psychopathology in females with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a controlled, five-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the importance of understanding the long-term outcome of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the available literature is predominantly based on male samples. This study estimated the lifetime burden of comorbid psychopathology in a large sample of girls with and without ADHD followed up over five years. METHODS: We conducted a blind, five-year prospective longitudinal study of girls with (n=140) and without (n=122) ADHD, aged 6-18 years at baseline, consecutively ascertained from either community pediatricians or psychiatrists at an academic medi

[Drug addiction in young prison inmates with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)].

Prospective studies of children with ADHD have shown a high level of substance use disorder comorbidity, particularly when associated with social maladaptation and antisocial behavior. Conversely, studies of drug abusing participants and delinquents revealed a high prevalence of ADHD comorbidity. In this study 129 young male prison inmates were systematically examined for ADHD and substance use disorders. 64,3 % showed harmful alcohol consumption. 67,4 % fulfilled DSM-IV criteria for any drug abuse or dependence. 28,8 % of these participants were diagnosed with ADHD, combined type, other 52,1

Adults' versus children's perceptions of a child with autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The present study examined public perceptions toward children with autism or with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A convenience sample was used consisting of 30 children (7-12-year-olds) and 30 adults. Participants read a stereotyped scenario featuring either a child with autism, a child with ADHD, or a normal child. Child participants were significantly more likely than adults to (a) express dislike/avoidance toward a child described with either stereotypic autistic or ADHD behaviors, and (b) perceive the child with ADHD as unlike themselves. However, child participants and a

Advocating for students with learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in public schools.

Learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders are chronic conditions that represent the most common diagnoses of students served in special education programs in the schools. In this article, we discuss specific problem areas that require decision advocacy on the part of the affected individual as well as his or her family. We briefly describe the requirements for teachers who specialize in this area of education as well as the nature of the conditions. We argue that education programs for individuals with such conditions must be tailored to offset the specific manifestations of the di

Family correlates of oppositional and conduct disorders in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Comorbidities among children with ADHD are key determinants of treatment response, course, and outcome. This study sought to separate family factors (parental psychopathology and parenting practices) associated with comorbid Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) from those associated with Conduct Disorder (CD) among children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Clinic-referred families (n = 149) were diagnosed using DSM-IV criteria. Parents completed measures of parenting practices. Comorbid ODD and CD were significantly associated with maternal negative/ineffective discipline. Comorbi

Assessment and treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children with comorbid psychiatric illness.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently occurs with a wide variety of comorbid psychiatric disorders such as conduct disorder, depression, mania, anxiety, and learning disabilities. Because the vast majority of children with ADHD are treated in primary care settings, it is important that primary medical doctors be proficient in the diagnosis and initial treatment of children with ADHD and its commonly occurring comorbid disorders. ADHD research is beginning to focus on the treatment of these comorbidly ill children. This review will summarize the recent fi

The efficacy of neurofeedback in the management of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a behavioural disorder characterized by an inappropriate level of inattention with or without impulsivity or overactivity. The estimated prevalence of ADHD is 7% to 10% in boys and 3% in girls aged four to 11 years. The higher prevalence in boys is believed to be the result of a referral bias because boys with ADHD are more disruptive and aggressive, and, therefore, more likely to be referred to specialty clinics. ADHD is caused by a combination of biological - often genetically determined neurochemical disturbances - and environmental disadva

Supraspan verbal memory in attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity normal and reading-disabled boys.

To assess memory problems associated with attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADDH) and reading disability (RD), nonverbal subspan, span, and supraspan measures was administered to 30 ADDH, 30 normal, and 24 RD boys, ages 7 to 12. Results from the supraspan verbal measures, which included word lists and related and unrelated paired associates, are reported. Across all verbal tasks, deficits became most apparent in ADDH boys on measures requiring organized, deliberate rehearsal strategies, sustained strategic effort, and careful consideration of response alternatives. This pattern su…

Could immersive daydreaming underlie a deficit in attention? The prevalence and characteristics of maladaptive daydreaming in individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Maladaptive daydreaming (MD) entails excessive immersion and engagement in complex fantasy worlds, causing distress and impairing functioning. Maladaptive Daydreamers often report that existing diagnostic labels are unhelpful for them. Previous studies reported high rates of comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among persons with MD, raising the question of their separateness. This study explored whether MD differs essentially from ADHD by examining an ADHD sample, hypothesizing a much lower incidence of MD. METHOD: Adults diagnosed with ADHD (N = 83) were asses

Comparing Obstetrical Outcomes Between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder: A Population-Based Studys.

Objectives: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is among the most common neurodevelopmental disorders affecting women of reproductive age. Previous data on this condition did not study its different symptom clusters separately. Our aim was to compare perinatal outcomes between women with hyperactivity cluster (ADHD) and those with the inattentive cluster (attention deficit disorder (ADD)). Methods: A retrospective population-based study utilizing data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project-Nationwide Inpatient Sample (HCUP-NIS). All deliveries or maternal deaths from 2004

Attentional functions in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder with and without comorbid tic disorder.

Although the coexistence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and tic disorder (TD) is common, the nature of association is yet not fully understood. Thus, the aim of the present study was to explore attentional dysfunction in children with pure ADHD compared to children with comorbid ADHD + TD. Three groups of 20 children each, aged 8-15 years with either ADHD, ADHD + chronic tic disorder or Tourette syndrome (ADHD + TD) and a healthy control group were compared in their performance on three computerized attention tasks. Tasks of sustained attention, selective attention and inte

Diminished visual dominance in adults with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder in the Colavita paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been linked to atypical sensory processing and altered multisensory integration, yet sensory dominance under audiovisual competition has not been characterized in adults. We therefore examined modality prioritization in adults with ADHD using the Colavita visual dominance paradigm. METHODS: Twenty-six adults with ADHD and 18 controls completed a two-choice Colavita task comprising auditory-only (A), visual-only (V), and simultaneous audiovisual trials (AV). Reaction times (RT) and intraindividual RT variability were analyzed with

Association between trauma exposure and mental health among adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Background: Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be particularly vulnerable to trauma; however, patterns of trauma exposure and psychological responses in East Asian contexts remain underexplored. Objective: To examine associations among ADHD, trauma exposure, and psychological outcomes, and to differentiate trauma-specific reactions from broader internalising symptoms. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 295 adolescents aged 12-18 years (149 with ADHD and 146 controls). Adolescents and their caregivers completed validated measures of trauma exposure (Tra

Balancing care with compliance: Medicolegal issues for general practitioners treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: As demand for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treatments increases, Australian governments are relaxing the requirements for general practitioners (GPs) to prescribe Schedule 8 psychostimulants. Depending on state or territory legislation, GPs will likely increase their involvement in the assessment and management of children and adults with ADHD. OBJECTIVE: This article summarises the medicolegal issues that might affect GPs when initiating, continuing and monitoring ADHD medications in children and/or adults. DISCUSSION: Psychostimulants are restricted medicatio

The relationship between sleep and problem behaviors in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

UNLABELLED: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is commonly associated with sleep disturbances. Sleep disruption can contribute to difficulties in a child's life and, therefore, can be an important determinant of their quality of life. This study uses data from the large multisite Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) database to examine the relationship between sleep and behavior in children with ADHD. We hypothesized that shorter and more interrupted sleep would relate to increased problem behaviors such as inattention and social diff
