The interplay between Callous Unemotional Traits (CU) and Moral Disengagement (MD) was examined in a sample of 90 adolescents with Disruptive Behavior Disorders. Using a person-centered approach, three CU and MD configurations were identified, attesting the strong relationship between these two moral dimensions. However, for some adolescents, CU and MD do not 'move together'. Practical implications are discussed in terms of assessment and intervention.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been associated with impaired performance on attention tasks in previous studies, but the extent to which these cognitive deficits translate into behavioral problems in the classroom and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remains unknown. By contrast, lead (Pb) exposure in childhood has been associated with ADHD and disruptive behaviors in several studies.
OBJECTIVES: In this study we examined the relation of developmental exposure to MeHg, PCBs, and Pb to behavioral problems at school

OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) after treatment with the Incredible Years Program. The frequency of symptoms was also calculated.
METHOD: The participants were 84 children (aged 4.1-8.9 years) diagnosed with ODD before treatment. The data were collected with KIDDIE-SADS interviews before treatment and at a 1-year follow-up.
RESULTS: At the 1-year follow-up, descriptive analyses showed that 68% of the children no longer had an ODD diagnosis. Even though all the ODD symptoms had been significantly reduced after treatment, most symptoms still occ

This study investigated the extent to which parental Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms impact child and parent outcomes following a multimodal family-school intervention, the Family School Success (FSS) program, when compared to an active-control condition (CARE). Participants were 139 children with ADHD (67% male; 91% non-Hispanic; 77% Caucasian; Grades 2-6) and their primary caretaker (91% female; ages 26-59) who participated in a randomized clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of FSS. Associations were examined between parent-reported ADHD symptoms at baseline and i

In contrast to typically developing children, children with autism rarely exhibit cooperative social behavior. To examine whether this problem reflects global developmental delays or autism-specific deficits, the present study compared cooperation, emotional understanding, personality characteristics, and social behavior of 10 children with autism who had average IQ to those of 16 children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and 10 typically developing children. In cooperative behavior, level of emotional understanding, and aloof behavio

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a disruptive behaviour disorder involving an ongoing pattern of angry/irritable mood, argumentative/defiant behaviour and vindictiveness. Onset is typically before 8 years of age, although ODD can be diagnosed in both children and adults. This disorder is associated with substantial social and economic burden, and childhood ODD is one of the most common precursors of other mental health problems that can arise across the lifespan. The population prevalence of ODD is ~3 to 5%. A higher prevalence in males than females has been reported, particularly before

This study evaluated the factor structure of the scores from a parent rating scale, the Parent Cognitive Error Questionnaire (PCEQ), which measures parents' attributions of child misbehavior and problems. The factor structure of the scores of the PCEQ was examined among 199 children (ages 7-11; mean age: 8.64 years, 58.30% boys, 53.80% White) with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Predominantly Inattentive Presentation. Reliability and validity of the factors were assessed. Two factors emerged from this sample: (1) parent-specific cognitive errors (self-blame for child problems)

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a childhood disorder, commonly occurring in early school aged children with some symptoms becoming normative in adolescence (e.g., irritability, disagreeing). Affect dysregulation is a risk factor in the development of ODD. Affect regulation is nurtured within parent-child relationships, thus disruptions to attachment may derail children's capacity to develop adaptive affect regulation, increasing the risk for ODD. Using a high-risk sample of adolescents, we investigated the association between attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance with ODD through

Mrs. Forrest brought Jackie, her 11-year-old adopted daughter, to her pediatrician with a range of concerns, including problems with attention, school performance, anxiety, and frequent oppositional behaviors. Jackie was removed from school because of her mother's concern that the "school was not doing enough" to help Jackie. School reports were not available at this visit. Her mother reported going to great lengths to seek help for Jackie, including individual and family therapy, a psychological evaluation, academic tutoring, and a variety of home-school curricula. She planned to enroll Jacki

The following case study is presented to highlight the importance of consistency in identifying and treating oppositional defiant disorder in a pediatric patient with a life-threatening medical illness. A pediatric transplant patient's oppositional behaviors are described, as well as the educational behavioral training program provided to the patient's caregivers and medical staff. As a result of the training, the patient engaged in less oppositional behavior, was more cooperative and pleasant with staff, and was more compliant with her treatment. Subjective reports from caregivers indicated t

The lack of empirical research relating temperament models and personality hinders conceptual integration and holds back research linking childhood traits to problem behavior or maladjustment. This study evaluates, within a sample of 443 preschoolers, the relationships between children's maladaptation and traits measured by three temperament models (Thomas and Chess, Buss and Plomin, and Rothbart), and a Five-Factor based personality model. Adequate reliabilities and expected factor structures are demonstrated for most scales. A joint principal component analysis combining 28 temperament and 1

BACKGROUND: Hypomania/mania and depression are hypothesized to correspond to high and low expressions of behavioral activation system (BAS) activity, respectively, in bipolar individuals. In contrast, behavioral inhibition system (BIS) activity is hypothesized to regulate anxiety. The aim of the present study was to examine whether self-reported levels of BAS functioning in bipolar adolescents corresponded with levels of concurrent manic and depressive symptomatology. The secondary aim was to investigate whether self-reported BIS levels were associated with self-reported anxiety symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in children and adolescents. It is characterized by age-inappropriate inattention/impulsiveness and/or hyperactivity symptoms. ADHD shows a high comorbidity with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), a disorder that features symptoms of emotional lability. Due to this comorbidity, emotional lability was long considered a secondary consequence of ADHD, which could arise under the influence of environmental factors such as inefficient parenting practices, as part of an ODD diagnosis.
