Is complex signal processing for bone conduction hearing aids useful?

OBJECTIVES: To establish whether complex signal processing is beneficial for users of bone anchored hearing aids. METHODS: Review and analysis of two studies from our own group, each comparing a speech processor with basic digital signal processing (either Baha Divino or Baha Intenso) and a processor with complex digital signal processing (either Baha BP100 or Baha BP110 power). The main differences between basic and complex signal processing are the number of audiologist accessible frequency channels and the availability and complexity of the directional multi-microphone noise reduction and

Congenital and acquired cytomegalovirus infection and hearing evaluation in children.

OBJECTIVES: Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is one of the most common intrauterine diseases. In all, 1% of live births is affected by cytomegalovirus infection, while 90% neonates with perinatal infection do not show symptoms of disease. Symptomatic CMV is present in 5-10% of children. Typical clinical signs of CMV infection are microcephalia, mental retardation, progressive major amblyacousia, and neuromuscular infection. Hypoacusis is present in 30-60% of children with congenital symptomatic CMV - in most cases it is bilateral and applies to high frequency hearing loss. The purpos

A three-level hearing screening program for school children.

This study reports the results of a hearing screening program that was conducted in a number of schools in Alexandria region in the school year 1997-1998. Schools were classified according to location into urban and suburban schools. Screening was done in three separate levels. In the first level, screening was done by health visitors in classrooms. To pass the screening in this level, the student had to indicate hearing of 30, 30, 25 & 25 dB tones at 1000, 2000, 4000 & 8000 Hz, respectively. A total of 6180 students were screened in this level, and only 10% of them (614 students) failed. The

Incidence of hearing decline in the elderly.

Pure-tone audiometry was done on 1475 persons on two occasions 6 years apart by the same audiologist in the same facility. The age of the subjects ranged from 58 to 88 years at the initial testing and 63 to 95 at the second. The average 6-year threshold change ranged from 1 to 8 dB at 250-6 kHz and 10-15 dB at 8 kHz. The differences in thresholds fell into two patterns, one for low frequencies (250-1 kHz) and the other for high frequencies (4-8 kHz). For the lows, thresholds worsened at an increasing rate with increasing age independent of the initial hearing level, and women's thresholds wors

Comparison of Deep Learning Models for Objective Auditory Brainstem Response Detection: A Multicenter Validation Study.

Auditory brainstem response (ABR) interpretation in clinical practice often relies on visual inspection by audiologists, which is prone to inter-practitioner variability. While deep learning (DL) algorithms have shown promise in objectifying ABR detection in controlled settings, their applicability to real-world clinical data is hindered by small datasets and insufficient heterogeneity. This study evaluates the generalizability of nine DL models for ABR detection using large, multicenter datasets. The primary dataset analyzed, Clinical Dataset I, comprises 128,123 labeled ABRs from 13,813 part

Evaluating the feasibility of a tele-diagnostic auditory brainstem response service in a rural context.

BACKGROUND: There is a noticeable gap in access to audiology services in South Africa, and the gap is intensified in rural areas. Often, primary healthcare (PHC) facilities have an unequal ratio of audiologists to patients in need. Telehealth can expand the range of hearing healthcare services. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine whether, for infants, tele-diagnostic Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) assessment results conducted within a mobile clinic van are comparable to face-to-face diagnostic ABR results in rural Winterveldt, Pretoria North, South Africa. METHOD: The study utilised

[Middle Ear Malformations].

Middle ear malformations (MEMs) represent a diverse group of congenital anomalies with significant implications for auditory function. These malformations, which occur in approximately 0.5 to 3% of conductive hearing loss cases, can arise from various genetic and environmental factors. They often manifest unilaterally and may occur in isolation or as part of a syndromic condition. MEMs are closely associated with abnormalities of the external ear and less frequently with inner ear anomalies.Embryologically, the middle ear develops from the first and second pharyngeal arches, with interactions

[AUDITORY BRAINSTEM IMPLANTS (ABI) IN CHILDREN: CASE SERIES IN SHAARE ZEDEK MEDICAL CENTER].

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CI) are the treatment of choice for individuals with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. A small group of patients, with pathology central to the cochlea, cannot benefit from CI. Examples in children include absence of the cochlear-nerve or cochlear aplasia. In these cases, implantation of an auditory brainstem implant (ABI), directly stimulating the cochlear nucleus, bypassing the inner-ear and auditory-nerve, may be beneficial. OBJECTIVES: Describe a series of children with ABI's treated in Shaare-Zedek, including the first ABI implantation in Israe

Age and Other Factors Affecting the Outcome of AABR Screening in Neonates.

BACKGROUND: Although the utility of universal newborn hearing screening is undisputed, testing protocols vary. In particular, the impact of the infant's age at the time of automated auditory brainstem response (AABR) screening has not been well studied. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of newborn hearing screening data in 6817 low-risk, term and late-preterm newborns at our large, urban, academic medical center for a 1-year period to analyze the impact of age and other factors on the screening failure rate and referral for diagnostic testing. RESULTS: AABR screening failure rates

Association between age-related hearing loss and stroke in an older population.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Very few studies have investigated the association between hearing loss and stroke. A recent article in Stroke reported an increased incidence of stroke among patients with sudden hearing loss over a 5-year follow-up period. Our study aimed to explore this association among subjects with age-related hearing loss from a representative population. Further, we looked at the association between severity of hearing loss and risk of stroke in older persons, acknowledged as a limitation by the authors of the Stroke report. METHODS: The Blue Mountains Hearing Study is a popula
