We describe 2 cases of recurrent dislocation of the shoulder in free-fall parachutists that occurred while falling free. We suggest that in such sportsmen surgical repair should be effected after the first dislocation.

Seventy-two samples from jet aircraft fuel systems were examined for microbial contamination. Ten contaminated samples yielded 43 microorganisms which were classified into nine genera of bacteria and three genera of fungi. The predominant types, comprising about 37% of the isolated cultures, were identified as Bacillus spp. The remaining cultures were distributed among 11 genera, each of which represented 2 to 9% of the total isolates. OBJECTIVE: To study the characteristics of Meniere's disease in aircrew and its possible influence on space flight.
METHOD: Case studies of Meniere's disease were carried out in 22 pilots.
RESULT: There were vertigo (n=22), tinnitus (n=21), abnormal hearing (n=19) and abnormal vestibular function (n=11) in 22 pilots.
CONCLUSION: Meniere's disease may hazard the flying in aviation or space and flying may further damage the inner ears of patients with Meniere's disease.

Air-surgeons of the sanitary aviation department of the Vologda Regional Hospital analysed 279 summons to patients with acute gastrointestinal hemorrhage living in the districts of the region. They came to the conclusion that emergency gastroduodenoscopy allowed air-surgeons to identify the source of the bleeding in 97.64% of patients, determine the rational therapeutic tactics, and reach a well-grounded decision on evacuation of the patients to the regional hospital, as a result of which mortality reduced by more than half.

The medical aspects of journeys by air are often of practical interest. They obviously depend on the constitution of each passenger. Their clinical picture varies considerably and may occassionally be severe. The incidence of such affections in civil aviation has not been determined, though experience shows that they are by no means rare. Evaluation of the harmful effects of flying must clearly take individual habits and histories must be taken into each account, since predisposing factors will lead to unusual features.

Physicians who use aircraft to transport patients should be familiar with the general principles of altitude physiology, the basic characteristics of aircraft and the specific medical problems which are encountered in an aviation environment. Hypoxia, gas expansion and acceleration forces are common effects of air travel which must be anticipated and avoided in acutely ill patients. Provision of supplemental oxygen, use of decompressive tubes and proper positioning of the patient may obviate or minimize these problems.
