Several acute transforming retroviruses encode tyrosine-specific protein kinases which possess structural and functional relationships to cell-surface receptors for certain growth factors. Enumeration of sub-population of T cells with receptors for Fc portion of Ig G (Tr) and Fc portion of Ig M (Tu) and B lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of 39 Lepromatous, 44 ENL and 22 Post ENL patients were undertaken. ENL patients showed significant decreased Tr cell percentage than Lepromatous and Post ENL patients. Although T mu cell percentage was lowered in ENL patients, a relatively elevated T mu/Tr ratio was found than Lepromatous and Post ENL patients indicating elevation of helper activity in ENL. B cells did not register any change in the three stages.

The metalophil method for the demonstration of histiocytes was applied to 108 non-Hodgkin lymphomas diagnosed according to the Kiel classification. In 41 lymphomas the presence of histiocytes was assessed with the aid of the non-specific esterase reaction. The same procedures were performed on 12 lymph nodes with follicular hyperplasia and/or sinus histiocytosis. The number of histiocytes was estimated and graded from 0 to 3. Peripheral blood T and B lymphocyte percentage and serum immunoglobulin levels were evaluated in 36 Maculo-anaesthetic (MA) leprosy patients using E and EAC rosette techniques and single radial immuno-diffusion respectively. 21 Tuberculoid, 13 Indeterminate, 16 Borderline, 13 Lepromatous and 20 healthy controls were also studied for comparison. The results showed that the peripheral blood T lymphocyte percentages and humoral immune responses of Maculoanaesthetic leprosy are not significantly different from either Tuberculoid or Indeterminate leprosy types or from control group.

Abnormalities in the B lymphocyte population may be relevant to certain altered in vitro immune responses in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Using a cytofluorometric detection system, we looked for lymphocytes having homogeneous amounts of surface immunoglobulin of only one light-chain class. Several lines of evidence have demonstrated B cell intrinsic activation defects in patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). Increased amounts of anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibody (ANCA) directed against proteinase 3 (PR3) are a diagnostic and pathogenic hallmark of full-blown Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). Aggregates of B lymphocytes proximal to PR3+ cells as well as plasma cells have been described as substantial components of Wegener's granuloma and could participate in forming tertiary lymphoid structures, which might promote autoantibody formation. Our aim was a molecular analysis of single B cells in order to develop a methodological approach that allows examination of potential ANCA formation in the tissue.
