Fusing Foveal Fixations Using Linear Retinal Transformations and Bayesian Experimental Design.

Humans (and many vertebrates) face the problem of fusing together multiple fixations of a scene in order to obtain a representation of the whole, where each fixation uses a high-resolution fovea and decreasing resolution in the periphery. In this letter, we explicitly represent the retinal transformation of a fixation as a linear downsampling of a high-resolution latent image of the scene, exploiting the known geometry. This linear transformation allows us to carry out exact inference for the latent variables in factor analysis (FA) and mixtures of FA models of the scene. This also allows us t

Bayesian network for predicting mandibular third molar extraction difficulty.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to establish a model for predicting the difficulty of mandibular third molar extraction based on a Bayesian network to meet following requirements: (1) analyse the interaction of the primary risk factors; (2) output quantitative difficulty-evaluation results based on the patient's personal situation; and (3) identify key surgical points and propose surgical protocols to decrease complications. METHODS: Relevant articles were searched to identify risk factors. Clinical knowledge and experience were used to analyse the risk factors to establish the Bayesian network.

Integrated morphological and phylogenomic analyses revealed a novel genus Paramicrotoena (Lamiaceae - Pogostemoneae) discovered in the Pan-Himalaya.

Reticulate evolution, driven by incomplete lineage sorting (ILS) and gene flow, is increasingly recognized as a fundamental process shaping lineage diversification, posing both challenges and opportunities for taxonomic treatment. During field investigations in Xizang, China, we discovered a morphologically distinct new species exhibiting certain similarities with the genera Microtoena yet clearly differing in corolla morphology. We sampled all 12 currently recognized genera within the tribe Pogostemoneae and conducted phylogenomic analyses integrating data from 539 low-copy orthologous nuclea

Meta-UNet: enhancing skin-lesion segmentation with multimodal feature integration and uncertainty estimation.

PURPOSE: Medical image segmentation plays a crucial role in diagnostic pipelines. This study investigates the integration of lesion-specific metadata with image data to enhance segmentation accuracy and reduce predictive uncertainty. METHODS: The standard U-Net architecture was modified to incorporate lesion-specific metadata (Meta-UNet). Various integration strategies, including addition, weighted addition, and embedding layers, were evaluated. Additionally, a Bayesian Meta-UNet with Monte Carlo Dropout (MCD) was developed to assess the impact of metadata integration on model uncertainty. Un

Exploring the Impact of Laboratory Reagents on Pharmacokinetic Profiling.

BACKGROUND: Laboratory reagents impact measured factor activity of extended half-life (EHL) concentrates. Variability in measurements may lead to under or over estimation of the pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters, and thus influence clinical dosing decisions. Since 2020, WAPPS-Hemo (www.wapps-hemo.org) has been collecting reagent information when haemophilia centres submit data for PK parameters estimation. OBJECTIVES: To identify the pairs of concentrates (recombinant FVIII and FIX) and reagents leading to significant discrepancies between observed PK estimates compared to WAPPS-Hemo population

Clinical Utility of Multicancer Detection in Symptomatic Patients: A Decision-Making Perspective.

PURPOSE: There is growing interest in multicancer detection (MCD) blood tests for diagnosing patients with cancer-related symptoms. However, recent studies suggest that MCD testing may not be sensitive enough to rule out cancer in the symptomatic population without retraining the underlying classifiers. On the basis of clinical guidelines for suspected cancer referral, here we cast these data into a formal diagnostic decision-making perspective to assess clinical utility. METHODS: Data were extracted from the SYMPLIFY study (ISRCTN10226380), which evaluated the performance of the Galleri test

Developmental trajectory of voluntary alcohol consumption in adolescent mice using finite mixture modeling and Bayesian posterior probability analysis.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) pose a significant public health challenge, with adolescence representing a critical period of vulnerability for the initiation of alcohol consumption. Variability in drinking behaviors among individuals complicates efforts to characterize developmental trajectories, limiting our understanding of underlying biological mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify and characterize distinct patterns of voluntary alcohol consumption in adolescent mice, using advanced statistical methods to model behavioral heterogeneity. METHODS: Thirty-five male C

On the performance of multi-fidelity and reduced-dimensional neural emulators for inference of physiological boundary conditions.

Solving inverse problems in cardiovascular modeling is particularly challenging due to the high computational cost of running high-fidelity simulations. In this work, we focus on Bayesian parameter estimation and explore different methods to reduce the computational cost of sampling from the posterior distribution by leveraging low-fidelity approximations. A common approach is to construct a surrogate model for the high-fidelity simulation itself. Another is to build a surrogate for the discrepancy between high- and low-fidelity models. This discrepancy, which is often easier to approximate, i

The impact of sleep loss on decision making: Opening the cognitive black box.

The impact of sleep loss on decision-making is well-documented, yet current quantitative methods often obscure the cognitive mechanisms underlying these impairments. This review examines evidence from key studies on how sleep deprivation affects decision-making domains, including risk propensity, effort and delay discounting, Bayesian reasoning, and cognitive flexibility. We critique the prevalent reliance on global behavioural metrics, highlighting three key limitations: 1) sleep-driven cognitive effects may be masked despite non-significant behavioural outcomes, 2) alternative cognitive stra

Exceptional fossils from Peru and an integrative phylogeny reconcile the evolutionary timing and mode of Gavialis and its kin.

The acquisition of a long and slender snout (longirostry) resulted in extremely similar morphology across crocodylians and, therefore, raised a conflict between morphological and molecular phylogenetic hypotheses involving the longirostrine living gharials, Gavialis gangeticus and Tomistoma schlegelii. This discrepancy is not only topological but also concerns divergence time estimates for the crown clade Gavialidae, especially due to the inclusion of other longirostrine forms, ancient 'thoracosaurs'-which introduces significant chronostratigraphic inconsistencies. To contribute to reconciling

Semi-supervised Bayesian integration of multiple spatial proteomics datasets.

The subcellular localisation of proteins is a key determinant of their function. High-throughput analyses of these localisations can be performed using mass spectrometry-based spatial proteomics, which enables us to examine the localisation and relocalisation of proteins. Furthermore, complementary data sources can provide additional sources of functional or localisation information. Examples include protein annotations and other high-throughput 'omic assays. Integrating these modalities can provide new insights as well as additional confidence in results, but existing approaches for integrati

Mapping the environmental risk of coccidioidomycosis in Sonora, Mexico: a Bayesian spatiotemporal perspective (2010-2022).

Coccidioidomycosis, a fungal disease caused by Coccidioides spp. is endemic in arid regions of the Americas. Although northern Mexico shows increasing incidence, its environmental determinants remain understudied. This research examines the association between coccidioidomycosis and environmental factors in Sonora, Mexico, from 2010 to 2022. We integrated municipal-level hospital discharge data with mean annual temperature, total annual precipitation, wind speed and direction, soil moisture, vegetation index and land use (human settlements and agriculture). Using a Bayesian hierarchical spatio

Cerebrospinal fluid and blood neurofilament light chain in Parkinson's disease and atypical parkinsonian syndromes: a systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The value of neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels as a biomarker for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and atypical parkinsonian syndromes (APS) remains controversial. Furthermore, few studies have directly compared NfL levels among specific APS categories. This study aimed to compare cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood NfL levels among PD, APS, other PD-related disorders, and controls, as well as rank NfL levels across these groups. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched from

An expanded phylogenomic analysis of Heterolobosea reveals the deep relationships, non-canonical genetic codes, and cryptic flagellate stages in the group.

The phylum Heterolobosea Page and Blanton, 1985 is a group of eukaryotes that contains heterotrophic flagellates, amoebae, and amoeboflagellates, including the infamous brain-eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri. In this study, we investigate the deep evolutionary history of Heterolobosea by generating and analyzing transcriptome data from 16 diverse isolates and combine this with previously published data in a comprehensive phylogenomic analysis. This dataset has representation of all but one of the major lineages classified here as orders. Our phylogenomic analyses recovered a robustly supported

Predicting Radiotherapy Patient Outcomes with Real-Time Clinical Data Using Mathematical Modelling.

Longitudinal tumour volume data from head-and-neck cancer patients show that tumours of comparable pre-treatment size and stage may respond very differently to the same radiotherapy fractionation protocol. Mathematical models are often proposed to predict treatment outcome in this context, and have the potential to guide clinical decision-making and inform personalised fractionation protocols. Hindering effective use of models in this context is the sparsity of clinical measurements juxtaposed with the model complexity required to produce the full range of possible patient responses. In this w
